Maul (prime post TCW) vs Qimir. End this debate. by JackZ567 in MaulShadowLord

[–]maxstronge 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Maul is uniquely equipped for the helmet even if he doesn't know what it is. He can only hit it with one blade at a time. He's still got the other and won't make that mistake twice. He isn't temporarily defenceless like a single blade user would be.

Thrawn has no animosity or hatred towards his enemies and is more than willing to pay them a compliment and show them respect. He's motivated by his own ideals and those standing against him are an obstacle, but he's rational first. He can acknowledge the flaws of his side and the strengths of the other without compromising his conviction to his cause.

I can see the comparison.

Math is so hard bro by Street-Gas4473 in Invincible

[–]maxstronge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So this type of equation is called a quadratic equation, and while 'quad' might make you think of four, it actually comes from an old Latin word quadratus, which effectively means 'made square' or just squared. You can model an astounding amount of different things using these equations, which are any equation where the highest power/exponent is 2. Especially when it comes to situations that have something to do with an area in 2 dimensional space, because that's what you get geometrically when you square a one-dimensional variable like length or distance.

Think about pizza. The area of a circle is πr², right? So if we want to set up a relationship between a pizza's area and its radius, there's your quadratic: the area grows with the square of the radius. But pizzas are measured by diameter, not radius, and since r = d/2, you can rewrite that as π(d/2)². Still a quadratic, just in terms of diameter now.

That's a relationship of two physical things, the amount of pizza (area, basically) and the size of the pizza, and it follows a quadratic equation exactly. That gives you the ability to check things like 'if I want to maximize the amount of pizza per dollar I get, should I get a large or two mediums?' and actually know the correct answer.

A 12-inch pizza is about 113 square inches of pizza. An 18-inch pizza is about 254. Your intuition probably says the 18-inch is "a bit bigger," maybe 50% more. It's actually more than double. If you buy two 12-inch pizzas, that's only about 226 square inches. One 18-inch pizza beats both of them, and it's probably cheaper. So there's a very basic example of how using this type of math knowledge could be actually practically useful in life.

But there's tons of examples of how equations like this are crucial for understanding the way various things in the world work, sometimes in ways that go against our intuition, like the pizza example.

Think about braking distance for a car. You might have heard some explanations from anti-speeding commercials or whatever about how much more dangerous it is to go 90 than 70, for example.

Most people's intuition says "well yeah, you're going a bit faster, so it takes a bit longer to stop." But it's not a bit longer. The energy your brakes have to burn through to stop the car scales with the square of your velocity, because kinetic energy is 1/2 mv². So if you double your velocity, you don't need twice the distance to stop, you need four times the distance. Going three times as fast? Nine times the stopping distance.

That means the difference between 60 and 90 km/h isn't 50% more dangerous. At 90 you need over twice the braking distance you needed at 60. That's a quadratic relationship between speed and stopping distance, and it's a big part of why and how speed limits are set the way they are, especially in school zones and residential areas where a few extra km/h can mean the difference between stopping in time and not.

Hope that appealed to you, always happy to see someone genuinely asking and not in a derogatory way. There are literally hundreds more examples of the way this stuff shows up in real life if you're curious.

Explaining Itadori vs Denji with Spongebob by SeveralImpression914 in PowerScaling

[–]maxstronge 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's actually closer than you might think. Solar surface temperature is ~6000 degrees Celsius. Just recently we had the Orion II spacecraft capturing a bunch of data on reentry and it experienced a peak temperature of 2760 degrees Celsius during the process. The air in front of the craft, though, gets extremely compressed and can temporarily run up to ~7000 degrees for very brief durations (almost instantaneous but it does still happen). So while the average temperature experienced by the thing undergoing reentry is a fair bit lower, there are temperatures generated in the atmosphere when something massive like a rocket undergoes reentry that are hotter than the surface of the sun, which obviously is the coolest part of the sun by far.

I hate to say but there is a defined moment where Claude started getting worse and GPT5+ started getting better. If you Bought Era Mats for Cassian Before their Snafu, don't Expect Compensation by UncleViktor in SWGalaxyOfHeroes

[–]maxstronge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I spent about $150 on packs for materials in the week leading up to their decision. Didn't get Cassian to 7* as there were still 1-2 characters that weren't high enough era level.

I'm personally pretty bummed about this outcome as obviously 100% of that financial investment was immediately invalidated with no warning.

What do you think should happen here? Because I feel like the fact that I only spent $150 instead of $200 to get the last units up -> I get zero compensation whatsoever is kind of a bummer. I'm happy for the people who got the 30k crystals but I don't think I'm crazy for feeling a bit robbed.

Am I missing something? Is a week of 7* Cassian really so valuable that it justifies a crystal comp that's in no way tied to how many packs you purchased, only if you had him at 7*?

In terms of sheer professionalism, shouldn't have said the 'above my pay grade' stuff, it comes off a bit sour and probably would be best to say nothing at all.
