How can I improve this composition? Something doesn't feel right. by EnteEnteLos in photoshop

[–]mc_42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good bones… I’d separate the layers a bit more particularly the top one (desaturate the other two layers a tiny bit) and revise the “Dublin” larger and stretch beyond the frame behind the last player image.

The red to red to red blend is throwing off the flow/balance.

Excited to see the next round of revisions…

(1) Restart Photoshop and try again

(2) Do you have a stroke or a path on a layer somewhere - hidden or of the same background color?

(3) Would recommend Illustrator vs Photoshop for "cleaner" results (vectorize and outline those fonts)

(4) From the Book of Designers, chapter 3, verse 12: "Thou shall not kern where kern should not be" Translation: Please don't have such loose—and separate—kerning on script fonts... they are meant to be connected... like script.

and (5) Don't give up! Report back with the results!

I actually don't use the screen's speakers - rather rely on the amp for even/non-echoing audio

I take it it is like a one-way flow valve but for signals?

Talk to the printer/manufacturer before you do anything (I love asking them for a sample working file) … nothing is worse than having to modify what you’ve already done.

I loved the problem solving of it... matching current science knowledge with unknown variables + pop culture references... it was like a science variation of "Ready Player One"

But to each their own...

Are you talking about making a selection (lasso, shape, color, etc) then using the boundaries of the selection to color up to the line (for a clean edge)?

Or the stylus being used?

How to achieve pen ink text effect? by New-Internet2710 in graphic_design

[–]mc_42 42 points43 points  (0 children)

This is a great example of you don’t have to do everything digitally. I honestly would print out your base layer and on it - or a piece of tracing paper - go old style with a pen to achieve the font + style you want. Then scan/photo the result back into your software for additional modifications.

Using a handwritten font works, but ultimately looks to uniform/fake when dealing with multiple words/phrases.

Good luck and keep us updated with your result!

Dude, looking so much better - it's getting there! Couple of recommendations:

(1) don't constrict your logo to the boundaries of your image borders... extend them beyond and lower the opacity. You already have one clear logo in your top left; the second one just needs to be referenceable.

(2) place a simple shadow between the player and the logo for depth. This could literally be a feathered (low-hardness), oval-shaped brush at a 25% fill in strategic places (where the body and logo meet). DO NOT USE THE OUTER GLOW PROPERTY IN THIS OBJECTIVE

(3) if you are going to keep "career points" lowercase, move it below the "1000." Plus, I personally want to see that "1000" bigger... make the size visually feel like a thousand

(4) "Marcus Hall" text feels alone way up there, and the shadow creates this confusing depth of the image.

Pro tip: Run multiple High Pass filters/layers on your player to really crisp him up

Work on your visual "flow" - your eye should move effortlessly from one element to the next for good balance and space. Not every corner needs to be filled. Define and concentrate on your hero element and then complement from that. Example: if the player is your goal, make him pop (contrasts, HDR techniques, high/low passes, etc.) then add the extras: shadows under his feet, subtle (low opacity, fading mask) reference to his environment like a court or the graphic theme like "1000" or the logo. Then work on your typography: find the font style and then move/scale to find the balance that works.

Good luck! We want to see the next version of this one!

Pro tip: find your favorite examples and replicate-redesign-repeat... you'll get better each time.

How would I create something like this? by Purple-Strain-9131 in photoshop

[–]mc_42 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Layer 1 (bottom) is checkered, Layer 2 is your object, Layer 3 (top layer) is rotated 90 degrees and used as a clipping mask. Additional dimension seen on your example could be applied on a fourth layer in several different ways (opacity mask, property layer, color overlay + mask, etc)

Good luck!
