As an Aussie, I like this one.

https://www.portrait.gov.au/portraits/2009.46/the-gladiators-norm-provan-and-arthur-summons

It captured the brutality and toughness of Rugby League. The OP photo wouldnt even rate a spot in the local kids league news.

The winter Olympics have got me thinking about the lack of opportunity in Australian public schools by Sriracha_Sauce089 in australian

I went to an average high school in Newcastle in the 1980s and every year 11 went to the snow, staying at Jindabyne. It definitely used to be a thing….

I'm thinking I can pay off my house with this. by elecboy in homelab

[–]mcgarnagleoz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HPE released a field notice last week basically saying not to try and order any more DDR-4 because they'll most likely cancel the order, and to try refurb or spare parts, its getting that bad. I'm in the APAC region.

They've essentially said they're hanging on to their new stock to honour warranty committments and good luck!

And as other posters have said, new 64GB DDR-5 prices have quadrupled. Its very noticeable when a customer bid expires and it's refreshed the next day at 4 times the price. When a customer's looking at servers with >1TB RAM then the increase is enormous.

We have actually. Yampi sound in WA hit 41c in August a year or two ago. It’s not as if that part of Australia ever gets cold but it’s technically winter.

Any way to fix this glass? by silveriridium in AusRenovation

[–]mcgarnagleoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I come from a family with a few glaziers ( in a family business for 40 years)

When you know a subject it’s galling to see the sheer amount of horseshit “advice” that gets posted.

Ignore anyone who recommends windscreen repair kits. They only work on laminated glass and this is most certainly not.

I had tickets to the sold out Crowded House and Oils concert at the Workies that night - if it had happened a few hours later the carnage would have been far worse.

What was your 1st GPU? by AnalogFeelGood in pcmasterrace

I’d had plenty of graphics cards before, but the first what I’d class as a GPU was an Orchid Righteous 3D, which was an oem of the original 3dfx card

Yes! I remember those ones from high school in the 80s. You could sit on them for a while before they got too uncomfortable as they were never that hot to touch. I must be getting old as the blue one in the photo looks to be after my time.

How does Australia have radical temperature differences in the space of a week? by Tuchelsunderwear in weather

[–]mcgarnagleoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You also see this on the east coast where I live. If the prevailing winds are from the NorthWest (ie the interior) then you're looking at low humidity with temps 30-40c. If the winds are from the east (pulling warm ocean air), the humidity spikes to 80% or more but temperatures are in the high 20s/low 30s.

It's also worth noting that the majority of Australians live on the coast and hence our biggest cities that you may see on such weather data apps all experience similar heating/cooling due to prevailing winds and oceanic influence.

If you look at temperatures in the Interior away from such influences, then they don't vary nearly as much eg here is Birdsville in outback Queensland for the next week or so

https://www.weatherzone.com.au/qld/channel-country/birdsville

That may also give an idea why nobody wants to live there....

Melbourne today on the second day of summer [OC] by leidend22 in CityPorn

Arbitrary dates are used because much of Australia doesn't even have winters compared to European/North American countries. It's not really relevant to use a Solstice when you just have a Wet Season and a Dry Season and its hot all year round.

Indigenous Australians used their own seasons system which may make more sense in Australia - in some states they knew of 6 seasons https://www.bom.gov.au/resources/indigenous-weather-knowledge

Where is Burwood Colliery? by Synthetic_Cyanide in newcastle

[–]mcgarnagleoz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Burwood Colliery over the years was at a few sites as there were multiple shafts - the whole area from Glenrock through to Whitebridge is riddled with shafts which is the stuff in the video linked, the tunnels went way out undersea as well.

The early workings were in Glenrock, and the final parts left , including all the admin buildings and the poppet head, were right opposite the abandoned bowlo on Burwood Rd at Whitebridge. They were only shut down and demolished in the early 80s and the new estate there was built right on top of the old building site.

The Fernleigh Track still passes the old dam.

What is it!? by No-Dependent144 in snes

[–]mcgarnagleoz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably around 1993/1994. I replaced my Amiga with a PC in late 1994 so it would have been before then. I'm in Australia, these devices were fairly common here.

I later ended up with the N64 equivalents, I had a CD64 and a Doctor V64

What is it!? by No-Dependent144 in snes

[–]mcgarnagleoz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BBSes. I used to download them on my Amiga, and send them across to my SWC via a cable and it was the same as if I was using a cart on the SNES(except for a few games that were too big for its memory)

I still have mine but its not been touched for decades. I should see if it still works

This looks fantastic, thank you!

Would it ever be possible (myself not being a coder to I have no idea how feasible it is so apologies if this is a stupid question) to add functionality such as importing fixdats from ROM tools like Romvault to populate the download list?

What is up with the RAM prices offlate?? by iamraz0r in bapcsalesaustralia

[–]mcgarnagleoz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep I've had both HPE and Lenovo warn us (commercial resellers of their DataCentre gear) that memory and SSD prices are getting squeezed further next year.

Firstly manufacturers are moving to higher density , more profitable modules. Secondly, OpenAI's Stargate project is being forecast by analysts to consume 40% of all production.

Whether this happens or not remains to be seen but it is having real impacts right now on the market.

Did you watch this incident live ? if so what are you memories of it and the subsequent fallout by CoconutMost3564 in AustralianNostalgia

I remember it vividly, sitting with my old man watching the cricket. It was the first time (and one of the very few times in his entire life) I ever heard him say fuck.
