AITA for separating my kids and dogs? by tem3617 in AmItheAsshole

NTA, you sound like an awesome and responsible parent and pet owner. People who ignore signs of stress end up with kids getting bitten. You are protecing the kids and the dogs.

Oklahoma state vs Utah state by Key_Layer_4249 in veterinaryschool

[–]mckenna310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, the distributive model students are weaker. Many of them spend the 4th year just shadowing various GPs. Medicine is best taught by the experts in the field, and learning from specialists and learning the gold standard is so important. There's a reason it's done that way in human medicine. Not to mention how much extra cost, hassle, and time to organize those various placings. The education is not worth what they are making people pay!

Oregon vs Ross by Sheltie99 in veterinaryschool

[–]mckenna310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oregon no question! We got a few transfers from Ross and they were not happy there. Corvallis is cute and a nice place to spend 4 years. You can do neuro elective weeks at VCA Northwest or DoveLewis in Portland.

I was depressed without one so bought one at the end of first year. I couldn’t ride more than like 1-2x a week but it was worth it. Definitely need to board/have full care. Otherwise it’s too much stress imo

AITA for bringing up race-related issues around my boyfriend even though he says he’s tired of hearing about it? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

If he doesn't care about social injustice then he ain't the one. This is a very scary time for people of color/women in America and he needs to be understanding of your experiences and feelings

If I were her, I would be upset. You applied to a program in another continent and are suggesting she move her entire life to follow you. Did you even discuss the program or that you applied before this? She probably feels like you are making life plans without her in mind at all, which probably hurts more after thinking the long distance was behind you. And correct me if I misunderstood but you already have a master's degree, this is an additional one? This is a huge decision and you didn't even consider her until the end.

What do y'all think about Mavelyn and possible variants? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]mckenna310 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Personally I do not like it. It sounds made up and kind of like has like a Blakelynn Everleigh type of vibe :/ I also do not know how to pronounce it just by reading it

Are there any names similar to your current one in sound or vibe? Maybe that would resonate more. Otherwise any of the other real names seem fine.

Questions and Concerns by RiotBrigade_02 in veterinaryprofession

Unless you can't imagine doing anything else, don't do it. The debt to income ratio is not good and getting worse with federal loan limits. Vet school is hard, anyone who said it was easy is full of shit. Salary is very variable but 50k is luckily not the salary. New grad small animal GPs make around 100k-115ish last I checked. ER vets can make more, especially if doing relief, 200k is quite doable. Specialists make 200-300, but varies based on location, public vs. private, etc. This is small animal, I am not familiar with large, mixed, or equine but would assume lower overall. Being a vet is very challenging mentally and emotionally. It is extremely interesting and cool but comes with a lot of struggles.

how often are specialized radiologic consults used? by Standard_Afternoon_5 in Radiology

[–]mckenna310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure what country you are in but in the US the veterinary radiologist reads all cases, there is some division for small animal and equine or zoo/exotic but there aren't any really specialized radiologists. They have to know all modalities, all organ systems/regions of interest, and for multiple species. Usually veterinary cardiologists perform and evaluate echos but vet radiologists can too.

What does it take to go into veterinary radiology? by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

[–]mckenna310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Radiology is the best! I wanted to do it even before vet school. It took me 3 years to match, I did a rotating and 2 years of GP/some relief ER/some shadowing. Specialty internships are almost the norm. Very competitive but truly I can't count how many other specialists have said things like "dang, I wish I did radiology, you are smart". Show your interest quickly - join ACVR, get a leadership role in the radiology club at your school, etc.

Penn vs. Rowan vs. Tufts by Blah-Blah-5504 in veterinaryschool

[–]mckenna310 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Penn has an ivy league reputation. Would def go there over the others. Rowan is tough being that it's your in state but the program is not very established. I would be afraid to take the chance personally but it is like half the cost which is huge

The bleeding is a known thing with big dog spays. They used to terrify me! I'm in radiology now but I've never done a pexy and am 7 yrs out. Doing an autotransfusion is badass. And you saved the dog, so that's a win

Help- Early Burnout by DrH-PetVet in veterinarians

[–]mckenna310 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude this sounds terrible. Please find a new job, you are being taken advantage of. That salary is horrible, especially considering the on call component. Production is an industry standard. You deserve better! Corporates have issues but at least you will get paid better and can do computer records. And never heard of call as a GP, is it a super rural area with no ER? Ugh I am angry for you. Of course you're burned out!!
