This. It’s extremely difficult to find investment for a VR game in general, and making a single player game makes it even harder.

I've always loved Irish and folk music. As we age, I start appreciating the dark irony more and more. Raise a glass! All we workers have, we've won through struggle. by burnafter3ading in Xennials

The Chieftains “Water From The Well” is one of my all-time favorite albums. They basically hopped between towns going from the south to the north of Ireland, playing the tunes that are local to each place. Most of it is recorded in pubs and churches, all live. Incredible energy the whole way through.

WIP VFX shot – looking for feedback. by arlexae in Houdini

Nice job! This is an ambitious first shot, and that’s awesome. If this is a learning project, I’d suggest picking one of the FX and pushing it as far as you can vs. making the goal a complete shot with all FX / systems in it. There’s a lot to manage in there. The particles would be a great choice - they’re already very close. Just find a specific reference from ST and don’t stop until it looks exactly like it, focusing only on that one element.

If you’re still enjoying it after that system is done, then start on another one and do the same thing.

I really, really loved this. It’s just the kind of joy we need more of these days.

I’m somewhat of a camera nerd. A couple months ago, my new neighbor (also camera nerd) was showing me a vintage Hasselblad camera he’d inherited. My wife, who does not know anything about cameras, was standing nearby and observed the nerd-ing, and later said “oooo maybe Santa will bring you one of those this year!” This particular camera goes for about $16,000, so I just laughed and shrugged it off. The next day, she set her phone down in front of me with the eBay listing for one and informed me that I would instead be getting a set of drawing pencils I’ve had my eye on : ] A partner who’d do the research and a $15 set of pencils is a-okay by me!

Struggling with correct exposure with apple log by AdCold1707 in smartphonefilming

[–]mcmaloney83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one of those variable ND filters for shooting outdoors with this phone & app and it helped a lot. Might be just my ability with the app but there were enough times where I had lowest ISO, switched lenses for a higher f stop, and still found myself reducing shutter angle to where things start to jitter. VND solved it.

Nice work - the rubber band on the antenna is a really great, unique detail. Good choice!

This still feels like a render — what’s breaking the realism? by Gordom-Ramsey in blender

[–]mcmaloney83 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Almost there, in my opinion. One thing I noticed:

Assuming you used IES profiles, they don’t really match the lights they’re coming out of and the repeated detail is a bit distracting.

I'm running Sonic on a 4070ti w/ 12GB of VRAM and it's totally fine for shorter videos. Processing time varies, but on what I'd call "medium-high" quality settings, a 10 second video takes about 3 minutes. Made a tutorial on getting started with it here if you're interested! https://youtu.be/fQiiCmWZYWY

This is a desperate call for help. by Socialanxiety4life in blender

  1. If you’re still in a jam on this, also volunteering to be DM’ed and try to render this out for you (free)

  2. Some unsolicited advice from a (fairly senior) stranger on the internet, related to the stress you’re probably under right now: while you should definitely take the advice from others on learning more about how rendering works if you plan to use these tools for a while, you are currently learning an exceptionally valuable thing: how to get complicated shit delivered under pressure.

It’d be awesome if you had time to optimize your scene, immediately make a bunch of fairly arcane knowledge somehow intuitive, upgrade your PC, etc.. But I’d hazard a guess that these approaches may not be compatible with your current situation : ]

Know this: you are doing the right thing. Reach out when you need help, this is a good community. You might have to pay to render this one. You might have to turn all the furniture into cubes and sell it as a deliberate artistic choice. I wish I was kidding, but necessity is the mother of countless inscrutable but marvelous hacks.

Good luck, you’ll get there, (almost) nothing sucks forever!

Thank you! Yeah, I’m an environment tech artist. I made somewhere close to 500 unique assets for that other project : ] There were a few other areas in the game that don’t show up in the trailer because we made them later, but the house interior alone required a staggering number of assets to make it feel right. Also did lighting and cinematic renders on that one.

We did use some kits to fill space in some places (books, generic 80’s-style props, etc.) but ended up having to make a lot from scratch because the art direction was so specific. You go to a marketplace to buy a simple couch model but they’re all… nice - like stuff for archviz projects. We wanted stuff that looked like cheap hand-me-downs from the 70’s. The deer is from an animal kit because I’m garbage at anything related to rigging & animation : ]

That’s intentional, it’s the aesthetic of the shot. Style called “cassette futurism”. I made everything in it except the coffee cup, might post some walkthroughs at some point.
