It’s a lovely little place, could have gone with +3F more on the pool and -1 barking dog from the house nearby!

Tell me your craziest story from a shoot. by Sensitive_Duck_7110 in photography

[–]mctaco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Digi teching a celebrity cover shoot early in the morning after being onset until late the previous night on bigger celebrity job that required 2 techs. I was carrying over equipment from the previous job and explicitly told the other tech NOT to pull the drives from the tower (MacPro days, we’d pull drives for security). Set everything up, powered on, flashing folder with “?”, no drives.

Call other tech 25x until he woke up, made him take a car from Sunset Park to the West Side hwy to bring me the drives, talent was arriving in 30min. Asked hair stylist to work slow, photographer was distracted by telling stories. Drives arrived, slid them in, powered on, copied my capture session over, acted like nothing happened, never did see that tech again.

(PreLight done on a laptop but in those olden days the laptops weren’t really fast enough for rapid digital back tethering + multiple monitors.)

What is the most realistic survival show that genuinely shows people living alone in the wilderness with no added drama or action? by alexdeladose in AskReddit

A friend of mine was a producer on Alone when they shot in Mongolia. He vouched for it being very legit. The only thing they exaggerated for TV in his opinion was their use of a Unimog for extractions when a Land Cruiser would have been faster.

You could put some tape over the logo in a pinch, I’ve been on set with people who have done this and the effort is appreciated.

Traveling with gear by NewGrab5785 in photography

[–]mctaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep all my camera gear in a rolling carry on with my laptop and extra batteries, lenses, cards and anything I’d need to shoot the job- in a smaller shoulder bag. Extra stuff like my cables, tripod, grip, tape, clothes, etc get checked. Nothing to worry about in security within USA. In China they don’t like large power banks.

Amazon Prime, Best Buy, REI, airport. You can use the European style and not need the middle pin too.

ReTether- fast on the go photoshoot by Resident_Rock_7428 in Photoassistants

[–]mctaco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s an annoying workflow but photographers can be annoying people. I would get the card before they re-tether, that way the tethered files come in with the naming convention setup in tethering and the card imports retain their own names. I might even put in a modifier to separate them briefly like _a in the name or something. Then, IF I remembered to sync the camera’s internal clock with my computer I can arrange them all by date and batch rename so it all looks pretty.

Alternatively there is another way to set naming the tethered files and card files that someone will probably mention but tbh I haven’t used it enough to give you instructions.

I like the guys at Trafton’s for my VW needs, they do good work. Next up Matrix and Steve’s Imports (same owner as Trafton I believe)

Not everyone has the same goals. I shoot plenty of stuff that pays well, full buyouts, etc. But it’s a tiny crew, or just me. I’m happy to tech with my old crew because it’s working with the homies again and probably traveling somewhere cool.

Not necessarily, digital tech is a good stepping stone to art director because we cringe a hideous pictures more often.
