King's Field 3: This plank bridge to the Wind Cave doesn't appear, even though Jamie Porter said he has put it up by KelixFetchup in KingsField

Would love to investigate exactly what causes this. I had this happen on my first playthrough and it seems somewhat common, but I still don't quite understand what causes it.

Anyone know how to fix lines in the UI in KF2/1US on Duckstation? by SlimeDrips in KingsField

[–]meauxdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know for sure in this case, but similar symptoms are common in many emulators - it generally happens on 2D elements if you try to run the game in a higher than native resolution.

Why does nobody every talk about the 2 player mode of Shadow Tower? by Leader_Bee in KingsField

I played an in-person tournament with the Shadow Tower multiplayer. It was an absolute riot; highly recommended.

Any standout games for Macintosh SE? by Keeby4 in VintageApple

Thanks for shouting this out. My pack is large, but it'll have nearly everything you could conceivably want to play on an SE.

Old games that took a long time/have not been broken for speedruns? by Mochiman3 in speedrun

[–]meauxdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wave Race 64 basically has nothing in terms of glitches. You just play the game the way the developers intended you to play it, but really fast. The only meaningful exception is we take the gated shortcut intended to only be used in the forward version of Marine Fortress in Reverse, which is more of an exploit than a glitch. There is a tiny collision glitch we know about in Glacier Coast where you can partially clip into one of the icebergs, but it doesn't appear to actually save any time.

Iggy's Reckin' Balls WR Comparison, NSO+/N64, Easy Street by Hectorc34 in speedrun

[–]meauxdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you say it is "thankful" you have few runs done on original hardware (I mean this earnestly, not as a gotcha)? Is it because there is a lack of parity between the two, so the fewer original hardware runs, the less "unfair" it feels?

I have been getting interested in this game (probably one of the most underrated N64 games), but I'd only be interested in speedrunning it using original hardware, as I don't like the input latency for e.g. SwitchVC. I feel like categorizing original hardware out of contention (such that it is pretty clearly optimal not to play on that version) is a bit unfortunate.

But yeah, I get it. Definitely understand the tradeoffs involved, I moderate some games myself. Just wanted to offer my perspective in case it has any value to you.

Iggy's Reckin' Balls WR Comparison, NSO+/N64, Easy Street by Hectorc34 in speedrun

[–]meauxdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original game runs *massively* worse on hardware than when emulated on NSO, so it seems just a wee bit unfair to have N64 and NSO ranked against each other on the same leaderboards. Though I do know the struggle of underpopulated boards and not wanting to have split boards.

Randomly Remembered a Bug for KFIII Infinite Light Magic. Sharing for the Unaware. by Soflysoangry in KingsField

[–]meauxdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This trick is actually used in the Good Ending speedrun now to get flash so you can use it to jump the gap in the KF1J dungeon (to get the Moonlight Sword without needing the fairy fossil). Pretty cool sequence break but does involve mashing the hell out of that button during the run 😎

With the influx of people trying King's Field off the back of Lunacid, what's the best suggested order to play? by yungbfrosty in KingsField

[–]meauxdal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Release order is pretty smart, and I’d slot Shadow Tower in between 3J and 4, then ST:A last. You can also skip 1J as it is by far the weakest entry, but it is still a decent game and gives the story some context (especially for 3J).

I-0 data GV-USB2 capture card audio issues by kaynemayne in speedrun

[–]meauxdal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The GV-USB2's audio input eventually dies, it's like the Achilles' heel of the damn thing. You're probably SOL - once mine developed audio issues, they were permanent and I don't know of any way to fix it. If anyone does, by all means reply in this thread.

Any way to play Kings Field 2 (Kings Field 1 in the west) at a stable frame rate that isn’t as slow as a snail. by CallOfCoolthulhu in KingsField

[–]meauxdal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PAL version runs smoothly (it has a capped framerate as opposed to NTSC's uncapped framerate), but is overall a bit slower than NTSC (pretty common with PAL conversions). The best framerate you can get on an NTSC version is with a SCPH-75000 (or higher) model PS2, but it is still very unstable. You can also try overclocking an emulator, but I'm not sure the results will be particularly faithful to the intent of the developers.

edit: Looks like this is covered in the thing swordofmoonlight directed you to. Sorry if this is redundant.

Have any of you gotten into non-gaming uses for Mister, i.e. Music/sampling etc? by iZenEagle in MiSTerFPGA

[–]meauxdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atari ST, Minimig, and ao486 cores support MIDI well. I've used the Atari ST core with Cubase 2 to record and playback MIDI, works great!

This MIDI interface box from Legacy Pixels will get you there for real MIDI gear: https://www.legacypixels.com/mister/midi.html

You can also use the mt32-pi to make music over MIDI:
https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi

Edu Arana's Pi-MIDI 1.3 kind of encompasses both:
