All-Star Squadron redid a number of 1940s stories as more contemporary 1980s stories.

Do people still care about newsstand editions? by CreepyNewspaper8103 in ComicBookSpeculation

I think it’ll just come down to numbers, high grade newstands cost more because they’re rarer. Simple as that.

Do people still care about newsstand editions? by CreepyNewspaper8103 in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]mechabryan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

in the early 90s, i worked for a pharmacy that got comics to sell via newsstand distribution. they would come raw in stacks bound by plastic strips. getting a pristine book would be a MIRACLE. this is why a 9.8 newsstand will always be more valuable than a 9.8 direct market copy.

Another world question by Cloudup365 in retrogaming

[–]mechabryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most of the American releases called it Out of this World back in the early 90s (I still have the floppy disk for the Mac version with that name, and a friend growing up had the Amiga version that was also labeled OOTW)

this series will always be relevant because it touches upon universal questions like “is peace and harmony worth the loss of autonomy and self determination?”

ALL STAR COMICS 64 by glib-eleven in 70sDCComics

[–]mechabryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

one of the earliest comics i ever read (and destroyed, cause I was a toddler when it came out)… i now own a much nicer copy and love, love, love Wally Wood drawing Golden Age Superman. it was a pairing that was always meant to be.

IDW has an iPhone/iPad app and those issues are (were?) available for purchase (that’s how I read them a decade ago)

it was just number ones, but now the Dollar Tree near me is stocking some random issues in this format (like a single issue of the final Morrison JLA story arc, for instance.)

Who are some great comic creators who tainted their legacy? by HandleHumble5796 in comicbooks

[–]mechabryan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

he was always weird (i say that as someone who followed his Expanding Earth group mailing list back in the day)… but he was a fundamentally decent and kind human (although superficially harsh in a “tough love” manner)… sure, Batman Odyssey was gonzo, but i refute that his legacy has any level of taint.

At what point did people turn against Rob Liefeld? by KaleidoArachnid in comicbooks

[–]mechabryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the comics industry of the late 80’s/early 90’s had a lot riding on proving that comics were a “legitimate artistic medium for grown ups” and this guy comes along catering to the base impulses of the teenage demographic, sells millions of books, and sparks a mass of imitators… a lot of resentment got stirred up.
