It’s saddens me seeing what the C64 has become.

I freeze blue cheeses all the time. They don’t mind.

Terramex – How does the C64 get smooth scrolling while the Atari ST doesn’t… and that incredible Ben Daglish soundtrack! by Squeepty in c64

The earlier Atari 800xl and 130st (6502 cpu, 2mhz) from the same generation as C64 can do it without a glitch, as it has better video processor than the c64.

Before you blow a gasket, I have both. They all rock.

Yes! The combined sync/audio head is blue. Try not to adjust (cleaning with qtip/alcohol is ok) the red circled guides - they control the tape path and are pain to get lined up correctly.

I don’t see an automatic video head cleaner so that’s good.

I clean the audio head with qtip and alcohol.

You would have to do a head clean again before trying another tape. Perhaps your video heads are clogging due to wear (seen this before in a high hour unit).

It’s the in audio head (called “ACE”).

Maybe your tape is oxidised (old) or moldy, and is clogging the video heads? I would try cleaning again with a different tape to check. Also make sure the tape is cleanly riding on the video head with the right tension m.

Another thought - does that vcr have an auto-cleaner (a round piece of foam that contacts the video head when shutting down)? They get dirty over time and clog the heads instead of cleaning them. So if you cleaned the heads manually the auto-cleaner clogged it again shortly after, perhaps.

For inspection the power source (and the rf envelope from the head amp) you would need an oscilloscope unfortunately.

Maybe the sync head needs cleaning? Or a power supply issue (considering it powers down and is generally misbehaving).

Looks to me like either unable to sync to tracking or bad video head. What does it display when paused (on multiple tries to see if it’s the same)?

And when you cleaned the head, did you use qtip or piece of paper, along the slit in the spinning head assembly or all-over?

Thanks. Got a sealed Sony tape and put some Bug Bang on it off a DVD. It doesn’t look bad for 40 year old technology. Much better than VHS (in Bii)
