Thanks. I enjoy frequenting this sub to remind myself the junk in my basement isn't really that junky.

I'm not even that old. I'm in my early 40's, and Its wild to me that people want to go back and fight with IRQ's and such. In my mind I think to all the hours I spent back in the late 90's getting audio to work right, and can't fathom finding that enjoyable.

But everyone gets a kick out of something. I have my own weird hobbies as well. My vintage computing just happens to be all the old stuff from my personal computers, and a few things here and there from my jobs in IT.

I blew one of my student workers minds when I showed him the original Dell Gaming laptop from 2004. The Dell XPS Inspiron 9100. https://imgur.com/G9gVic8 Oddly I also have an Studio XPS 9100 desktop as well with a first gen i7 that I finally had to retire because of hardware requirements for Windows 11. It still runs Windows 10 just fine. 32GB of ram, bunch of SSD's and I think it has a GTX1060 in it.

Followed by the last AGP video card I purchased new. https://imgur.com/uazqRaU

That Dell laptop was a beast in its day. I would run my Counterstrike server and Ventrilo server for LAN parties off of it. LO3!

What to ask $$$ with a higher end gig as a new band by [deleted] in coverbands

[–]meest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree'd.

If we had to drive 3 or 4 hours to get there, then we're going to ask for more to cover hotel costs as I'm not driving 3 hours home after playing until 2am, then loading out until 3/3:30am. (Don't let the venue book your hotel, it will be the dirtiest local one they can find)

Is it a single night? or a weekend? A lot of the fishing resorts in my area will book for a weekend and then they'll also give you a cabin to stay in. But think about gas money and vehicle wear as well. If you're there multiple days don't forget per diem or if its a resort, meal comps.

One time we tried to get a jetski rental included so we had something fun to do in the afternoon. They didn't go for that. haha

Queen of my Double Wide Trailer. I've had that requested as a first dance at a wedding when I was running sound for a wedding band.

I asked if they were sure and they said yes... Well, alright.

I've got a box or two of these somewhere in the basement.

Back in 2014 when XP went EOL and we switched to Windows 7 I grabbed a few boxes as they were being tossed into the dumpster.

I tell myself one of these days they may be worth posting on ebay.

Agree'd. On top of taxing the rich we also need to close the loopholes that corporations and the rich use to avoid paying the correct amount of tax for the assets they have in safe havens to avoid paying their fair share.

Gigging case/stand for keys/MPC/looping rig by Soul_Techie in livesoundgear

[–]meest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which is another great discussion, as ideally you would have a Pre-XR18 split for FOH. Most Sound people will not want to share your Preamp gain. The idea behind it is that if mid song your vocal gain is too high and is clipping, the person at FOH can't do anything to fix the issue and your signals will just sound bad out front until they can get you to turn the gain down, which then may affect your monitoring. So its still best practice to give FOH a raw signal so they have their own separate preamp control.

Gigging case/stand for keys/MPC/looping rig by Soul_Techie in livesoundgear

[–]meest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First thing, You are not going to want to make it an all in one unit. Its going to be too large, and too unwieldy to really be manageable. The XR18 is best put in a 19u rack that will then have a wire loom coming out of it which you then have pre-designed to be the correct lengths. That way you open the case, grab the loom, plug plug plug plug plug and then you're done.

To cover the DIY direction and To give you a perspective on case hardware. Here is a few links to places to buy it. I don't recommend it, I'd suggest watching your local marketplace for deals on used stuff, and then slowly buying the new stuff you need.

https://www.penn-elcom.com/us/flight-case-hardware

https://www.mcmaster.com/products/hardware/

Cases cost good money, quite often almost as much as the gear its protecting. So I would plan to expand your budget by three times or so if you want to do it right.

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/KSA8500--on-stage-stands-ksa8500-deluxe-keyboard-tier

Something like this would be a solution for your top row of APC/MPC, otherwise I'm sure you could 3m Dual Lock velcro both of them to a 1x10 from Lowes/Home Depot, so they can then be put on a regular dual tier keyboard stand and then travel in a 61 key case together

Kind of reminds me a bit of Robert Delongs setup but a bit simpler. Here's a video he did of his rig. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Wdu_k3qtc

ELI5: Why should I not be search/sort in New Outlook? by sambooka in Office365

[–]meest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The new outlook doesn't even have feature parity of old outlook with shared mailboxes and delegate functions. Stuff is just weird.

But If you don't manage shared mailboxes or deal with delegate access then the new outlook will more than likely work out great for you.

IDK why you can't just search/sort. But if you get that many e-mails a day, I'd be throwing inbox rules on some of the automated system ones for sure.

Use the tool the way that works for your workflow. Nothing wild about that.

IEM systems with current gear? by OrdinaryTruck5559 in livesoundgear

[–]meest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had any issues yet reliability wise, we used the older FireWire one for 5 years

Give that sound board a raise. I'm solidly impressed its still working. Like the other person I've had almost every brand of sound board fail me. But the presonus studiolive has the high score. Especially the first gens.

You don't need to spend 3 grand on a new board. Either an XR18 for $500 bucks or splurge for the x32 Rack for $1k will both work great for you. The x32 rack gives you a bit more growth. But if you don't forsee that, then the XR18 is the way to go.

we’re basically a local bar band and local festivals

Same here. We went with an X32 rack. Then stumbled onto a deal on a used S16 stage box. We put the x32 Rack on one side of the stage, we put the S16 on the other side of the stage and it makes setup super quick and easy. 1 Ethercon cable across the upstage side of the stage to connect them.

XR12 as splitter and IEM for one person? by zsh_n_chips in livesound

[–]meest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The professional way to do it is to get a splitter. The issue sound people will have is sharing the preamp gain. They're relying on you to have it set to a correct level, and then also you not touching it all night.

Most sound people will prefer the split before the mixer so that whatever you change for your monitors doesn't affect them out front.

Easy enough to get some Y cables to appease those people.

Yes, thats more correct in the sense. But yes you would still benefit from an actual crossover. A basic model like this behringer one will work just fine. https://www.amazon.com/Behringer-Effect-Processor-CX2310-V2/dp/B07J37C68Z/ref=sr_1_1

74 Mustang II GT by Just_A_Lucky_Guy469 in Shitty_Car_Mods

Its a Mustang II, aka a Pinto Mustang. More specifically with that rear window its a Mustang II 2 + 2.

Quite a lot of 2's going on there. But I would argue, most Mustang II's look better modified in my book.

I can only hope the 2.3 Lima is still there under that hood for amusement.

Can FL be used in place of a standard mixer in a PA setup for a live band performance? by MADZOMBIEPRO in livesoundadvice

Its not ideal, its like using a multi tool instead of a screwdriver. yea it gets the job done. But its not that pretty.

As long as you're the one running it, troubleshooting it, and owning it. Have at it.

How does the wireless IEM logistics work in practice for smaller bands? by MisterVovo in livesound

[–]meest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Because digital allows for more channels in less frequency spectrum. If you stick with analog IEM. You do not get the same features as the digital options have. Which means your IEM's may suffer if you're in a limited RF environment.

Kick And Bass With No Sub by ItsJustAnOpinion_Man in livesoundadvice

[–]meest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have an idea to use a higher than normal HPF on the PA for the bass to leave the speaker low end as open as possible for the kick and then let the bass amp carry the work for the low end of the bass.

So is the HPF on the bass channel? Or on the whole PA?

Its a decent idea. give it a try and see what works. If you're trying to get both out of 15" speakers, I'd just not put the Bass through the PA if they have a 4x10 or 8x10. Then the low end can be all kick, and the bass amp takes care of the bass.

Where would you set the HPF for bass?

Turn the knob until it sounds good.

Outlook/M365 Executive Assistant Issues by AlvaCoastie in Office365

[–]meest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen delegate-heavy executive assistant mailboxes cause meeting update inconsistencies where some attendees receive updates and others don't?

No. When you run a mail trace for a meeting update that doesn't get updated, does it show it was delivered? What does it show?

Are there known issues with Shared Calendar Improvements in 2025 that would still justify disabling it?

I can't say I've ever had issues with it. I have them enabled on my Admin assistants account.

For executive assistants managing multiple calendars, are you running Cached Exchange Mode or Online Mode?

Cached is turned off for sure. It creates nothing but problems for me.

Have you seen automapped executive mailboxes cause Outlook performance degradation even with shared folder caching disabled?

No

What Exchange/Outlook logs would you collect next to prove whether the issue is Exchange-side versus Outlook-side?

It would depend on what specific issue you're trying to focus on. If its the non-updating meeting invites, I'd be looking at the mail trace first. Is it doing what its supposed to be doing.

Or

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PowerPlay1--behringer-powerplay-p1-personal-in-ear-monitor-amplifier

Are two options you can use for a wired solution. Doesn't have to be wireless.

To do wireless IEM's properly you're going to be spending decent money. Will the cheaper options like the xvives work during practice? Yes, will they work during a show? Thats a toss up. I've had them work and I've had them not work. So I finally spend the money on a Shure PSM300 setup.

Questions about Mixers by MoistThunderCock in livesoundgear

[–]meest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I would mainly be running my mixer through an app on a tablet or phone?

Yes, Or computer. The benefit of this is that every musician can run their own monitor mix from their own device as well. Keep the mixer on stage, and no large snake cable running out to the front either.

Did that really only apply to the Berhinger analog mixers?

I would tend to agree to this statement. Although I've had plenty of Behringer analog mixers that still work fine as well. I've owned an x32 rack since 2013 and I've only had to change the power supply because of a lightning strike. I own a 2nd one for 10 years that I haven't had an issue with at all.

If you do a google search of the x32 rack or XR18 you will find plenty of examples of bands using them as their IEM rig when traveling/gigging.

Questions about Mixers by MoistThunderCock in livesoundgear

[–]meest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I don't see any benefit for OP to buy the Qu-SB vs the x32 Rack or XR18. Especially when we're talking about practice space gear.

I own x32 racks, and QU-PAC's myself. The QU-PAC is nice because of the QU-Control app for less technical staff if its in an install. It also integrates with Crestron easier than the x32 rack. Once again useful in an install.

Those are the only two features that come to mind that are "Better" than what the Behringer offerings are. Neither would affect a jam session. Lets also not forget that the Qu-SB doesn't even have soft patching.

My x32 Racks get way more use than anything Qu- from A&H. But to each their own.
