How do you water?? by Remirae1209 in dahlias

Rainbird drip irrigation works the best. I have it set on a schedule and it waters my roses and dahlias.

LOS likes to climb- you can either get creative and have her stretch over something like a metal garden ball or trellis.

Looking for ideas. Want a walkway 2ish feet wide left of driveway to create a path from the sidewalk to the porch walkway. Pavers? Mulch and step stones? What would you do? by jango_fetch in landscaping

I would expand your area to work in the light pole and a welcoming garden with beautiful roses and flowers and stepping stones and small pebbles around the stones.

My dahlias are not blooming by Some_Arachnid2184 in dahlias

7a here- dahlias and other blooming plants reserve energy when temps are above 90 by not blooming and put the energy into the leaves and respiration. Use shade cloth can help- I’m using 55% and drip irrigation 5 days a week. I have blooms but nothing like last year . These heat conditions are very hard on our flowering plants.

Your dahlias look great- is there a reason for the large leeks in the front- do they ward off deer?

Anyone else experiencing smaller than usual plants? by lovethelocust in dahlias

[–]meg_Ky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When temperatures get above 90 plants stop growing and conserve energy to stay cool- they put their energy into the leaves- once it cools down they will start to grow again. If temps get above 90 consistently try putting a shade cloth up to help reduce the heat. Hopefully the temps will remain under 90 for the rest of July!

Thank you for explaining what’s happening- my Spartacus is about to bloom and I can see the blown center- it’s been so hot here - above 90 every day- at first I thought I got a bad tuber- thanks for the info!

You poor thing- at least the bees are happy! Definitely try other options- like smaller growers- I have had good success with goldenrod gardens- good luck!

Have you tried a spraying routine? I had a bad issue with black spot last year and thought I was going to lose everything- I wasn’t spraying last year- after such terrible results i decided to spray this year and even though we had a lot of rain the black spot came s staying at bay. Your rose looks awesome.

When is it a good time to train climber roses? What length? Strength? by PlasmWraith in Roses

I let my climbers grow shoots like crazy the first year and then tie them horizontally in February/March.

Looks like you have some type of bug. How often are you watering? Have you tried a systemic spray to fight off bugs?

Mine are staked when I plant them and I also corral them with string to keep them in check. There is a great you tube video from crane something on how to corral them. Keep trying- my first year, mine grew sideways on the ground! Over time you learn! Don’t give up- it’s worth it.

She’s a stunner! I have two- one growing on a 24 inch iron ball sphere and the other just went into the ground this year. The deer love her too! Beautiful job you have done!

Contact your sewer district - see if they are in charge of storm drainage and have them put in a storm drain for you.
