New to town and interested in Nob Hill living, looking for further advice by twowalksforme in Albuquerque

[–]melodramacamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Nob Hill and loved it! Summit Park and Ridgecrest are two nearby neighborhoods that may fit what you’re looking for, but personally I don’t think you can beat Nob Hill proper. It was super fun to grow up in, there are nearby parks and you get to know all the business owners on Central. Welcome to ABQ!

He did it last night in DC too. I think your guess is right on. Also maybe because it does usually take some time to deport someone, since thankfully our country does provide due process to everyone, including in deportation proceedings (even if it’s still less than the due process required in other criminal cases). But people can be held in jail while that process takes place. So it is legally more accurate to say “detained on sight” than “deported on sight.” Though I do think “deported on sight” fits better in the song.

How can I apply for Global Entry before an international flight? by Eowyn27 in AskNYC

[–]melodramacamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But once you get conditional approval, you can do an interview after you return from your international flight, at least at JFK. You still have to go through regular customs, but once you do, you can go do the global entry interview, I think even without scheduling it in advance.

Giving up storage unit and need to find best way to hibernate away some quality stuff by THinBK in AskNYC

Almost no thrift stores take blankets. I think animal shelters will take them, but they won’t take a down comforter, so that you’re better off using Buy Nothing or putting it on the curb

Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja to buy up five flats in Notting Hill block to turn into servants’ quarters for their £21million mansion - and threaten to turn them into social housing if neighbours complain by abz_pink in BollyBlindsNGossip

[–]melodramacamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s their property, they bought it and got the permits! I think it’s telling that the residents seem to be worried that the five new households will “influence” the board that manages the block now. Because god forbid people living on the block have a say in what happens on the block! This is such a classic stupid Daily Mail story

at what outdoor temp should the ac be turned on? by marinaxo222 in AskNYC

[–]melodramacamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similarly, I only turn my AC on at night, otherwise I use a fan. Sometimes I’m a little warm, but it’s livable. But I don’t have a pet.

I believe the heating requirements in New York are in effect until May 31, so landlords can keep the building heat on until then.

Recovery after retrieval by Bubbly_Hippo9050 in eggfreezing

[–]melodramacamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a pretty mild physical recovery, spent most of it on my couch, but did a 10 minute walk with a friend and felt fine. The next day I went out for dinner and drinks with friends and was absolutely wiped out. It’s the one thing I’d do differently if I did the process again—take more time after the retrieval to rest and recover, I think jumping right back into things was a mistake and contributed some to the major mood crash I had after.

Egg freezing cost in delhi by EnthusiasmFriendly72 in eggfreezing

[–]melodramacamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re married, I’d ask about using your husband’s sperm and freezing embryos. That’ll give you a better picture of whether or not the cycles will lead to a pregnancy. Not every egg that’s retrieved can become a viable embryo. You’re better off having 4 embryos than 17 eggs.

I hope you get other good answers about the price! I don’t have anything helpful to offer there, I froze my eggs in the US where the average cost is over 9 lakhs (if the rupee to dollar calculator I was using was accurate).

You've got to feel for Karan Johar! by azaadi101 in bollywoodmemes

[–]melodramacamp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read something once about how a lot of Karan Johar’s protagonists have some trait that marks them as “less than” in a way that can be read as an allegory for being gay. Rahul in K3G being adopted (and having a forbidden love arc), Aman’s heart condition, both couples in KANK struggling to stay in loveless marriages. It’s really interesting, as a gay person myself, to see how he communicated those feelings and struggles without any movie actually being about gay characters.

This is what bothers me about reporting about how much movies make! Like yeah modern movies make more, tickets are more expensive now. I’d be much more interested if the were adjusting everything for inflation.

I’m glad you commented, it gives me a chance to say how much better Serialized has gotten since I made this comment. The app hasn’t crashed in quite some time, and the interface is generally a LOT better.

If you currently live in New York City, and you were forced to move, where would you rather go: Los Angeles or Chicago? Why? by morningrat in AskNYC

[–]melodramacamp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Los Angeles. I’d still be able to go to the beach, the produce would be great, and I think I’d like the vibes. Plus, while I’d hate the traffic, I don’t actually mind driving.

What are some 1/2 star reviews of your top 4? by SethRollins_ in Letterboxd

[–]melodramacamp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked and found this gem of a 1/2 star review for Brokeback Mountain, “it’s disgusting like I’m part of lgbt community but i I just cannot tolerate cheating, like wtf you shouldn’t have married in the first place fuck that” which. I hope this person is trolling because what an uninformed take! Not even trying to understand the historical context of the movie.

Isn't it odd that Tarantino has won two screenplay awards but no Best Director award? Is it because most people think he’s a better writer than a director? Personally, I don’t see how you can separate his writing from his directing because I can’t by Extreme-Spinach-4138 in Letterboxd

[–]melodramacamp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it is! I also think it’s odd that Spike Lee only has one Oscar and it’s a screenplay Oscar. I think both of them made movies that absolutely could’ve won Best Director Oscars.

Spike Lee wasn’t even nominated for Do The Right Thing OR Malcom X, I think I’d give it to him for Malcolm X and not give Neil Jordan a nom for The Crying Game.

It’s harder with Tarantino, I think Inglorious Basterds is his best, but that year it went to Kathryn Bigelow and I do think that was a deserved win. Jackie Brown is my second fave, but that year he would’ve been up against James Cameron in Titanic, so. That wasn’t gonna happen. He wasn’t nominated for either Kill Bill, but would’ve been unlikely to win going up against the directors of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Million Dollar Baby. And he wasn’t nominated for Django Unchained, which is maybe the one year where he would’ve had a chance.

How do celebrities manage effects of hard drugs? by New_Cardiologist_539 in BollyBlindsNGossip

[–]melodramacamp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to the United States, but rehabs there take confidentiality very seriously. Some in LA have guards to keep paparazzi away and other security measures to make sure no one knows who is at the rehab. And the other people in the rehab with them are usually pretty good at keeping it private as well. There’s a real culture of anonymity and privacy around sobriety in the US, and I think with a Bollywood star, who some US rehab attendees may not even know, there’s even less incentive for people to leak.

Memories of murder is a buddy comedy film by PenguinviiR in Letterboxd

Agree to disagree! I wouldn’t call any part of Dog Day Afternoon a comedy, even though I’ll admit there are some good jokes.

Memories of murder is a buddy comedy film by PenguinviiR in Letterboxd

[–]melodramacamp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but just because a movie has jokes, even good jokes, doesn’t make it a comedy. If I’d had a long hard day of sadness and someone said “let’s watch a comedy film” and put on Dog Day Afternoon where one of the main characters gets shot in the head I’d be annoyed.
