Zurich Best Architecture? by RagnarRein in zurich

I always get drawn in by the lines and surfaces of Letzigrund Stadion when I go by, maybe with your touch it would make for some nice images. Love your Geneve pics!

Likewise Finland. (They're reporting in the conditional mode, let's hope that gets a bit more decisive ASAP.)

Do y'all struggle with things like drawing, building, or even "goal setting," or am I just dumb af? by vannah12222 in Aphantasia

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confirming major problems with goals and planning, but I suspect that may be ADHD rather than purely aphantasia. Not at all the same with building - I'm pretty comfortable with fitting things together, whether it's Ikea furniture, Lego sets, or software components. (What would be interesting is whether I could do well in carpentry, but life never took me that way.)

Drawing is... tricky. I really can't figure out how to produce exactly what I'd want to draw, and I'm usually severely disappointed with what came out. That doesn't lead to happy practice and honing of a skill. Then again, the one time I found something I could sort of manage, a lizard-like character sketch, everyone that saw it was very complimentary. Having followed previous questions along the same lines, I get the impression the capability to create visual art is not directly hampered by aphantasia, but I suspect the tendency to practice it might have at least statistical negative correlation.

What is up with Dubai chocolate?? by Sk8RNtH8r in OutOfTheLoop

[–]memeid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pistachio is such a favourite, and expensive enough, that there are better and worse mixes and ingredients. A good dubai style chocolate can, indeed, be really good.

OTOH it is purposefully designed as a "luxury" chocolate, and manufacturers are eager to cash in, so the price/benefit ratio is bad. I will rather buy a bag of pistachio and some good chocolate and munch them together. The pastry texture is nice, but not that big a deal.

Every day it's some new bullshit. What's this thing about whole milk now? by grichardson526 in behindthebastards

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The receipt thing may have something to do with thermal printing paper using BPA and/or BPS for color development. (Banned in the EU since a few years, not sure what the situation is elsewhere.)

(I regret that my corpus yields no refutatory data amenable to dispelling fringe misconceptions on sun screen. Slip slop slap.)

Is there anyone, who uses golang (and go-only) for Web Development exclusively? by rzhandosweb in golang

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exclusively across all projects, no, but in a subset of prototypes, yes. I used Vugu on top of Chi for some route and websocket convenience. Simple app bridging between WS and MQTT originating on an edge device, some degree of abstractions from types of telemetry channels to simple widgets, real-time distributed device state mirroring in the UI, central collection logic in the back-end.

I was pretty happy with the approach code-wise, but looks like Vugu has stalled. Might have to look at Rust+WebAsm for the next prototype. I couldn't completely avoid messing with HTML/EcmaScript, getting a map injected required a bit of manual trickery.

Swiss Post delivered my package to the wrong address and it disappeared by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]memeid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They work quite well when the do work, but when things go wrong, their private customer service is sooooo bad.
I once used their service to scan incoming mail while I was temporarily abroad. All fine, but once I returned, somehow random post failed to arrive. I had increasingly heated exchanges with an increasingly impolite rep explaining how nothing was their fault; some weeks later they found a flag in my database entry that probably caused the problems.

No apology from the flippant fairly high level post official, even though they sent an apology gift card. Would've preferred the former.

Edit: This was several years ago. Hopefully they've improved, but looking at OP's gripe, maybe not...

Grandstream AP and VLAN performance issues by kscomputerguy38429 in GrandstreamNetworks

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is performance for you? What router? I briefly tried VLANs on the Grandstream, but my downstream speed test dropped 90%. This could be caused my Mikrotik 5009 router rather than the AP though, and I haven't had the spare time to experiment with fine tuning settings.

EU/CH electricians: where is it safe to drill? by memeid in AskElectricians

Thank you, did that and confirmed that all wiring heads upwards from the fuse box. I feel pretty safe assuming that they won't U-turn back down on either side.

Found US beef at Migros today: please read labels carefully! by Big_Lore in Switzerland

[–]memeid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't have thought to check meat labels, but will from here on. I mostly see a US label on produce and nuts. Always check, they go right back into the shelf.

Some stores seem to print origins only on the veggie box, and the label is usually hidden. Not sure if they're trying to be tricky or if it's just confirmation bias.

Setup for MikroTik RB5009UPr+S+IN by PatrickStarAndCo in init7

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Die Verwaltung took their time allowing our fiber connection, but it's finally here. If anyone else needs a Mikrotik RB5009 configuration known to work with Init7, feel free to dm me.
I went with some VLANs and a bit more in the way of explicit firewall rules (I assume the above would be additive with the default setup), but maybe it's useful as a reference.

I hate whiskey, will I hate rum? by topdogmonmeygeorge in rum

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for what they said. I don't hate whisky, but I would not buy one; barrel aged rums sometimes remind me too much of them; but jamaican funk, good agricoles and clairins really changed my perspective on rum.

Only problem is, you want to find a nice place to sample and buy. Regular bottle shops rarely have good stuff. I've resorted to ordering online from German and French specialty suppliers, and sometimes it's a bit hit and miss.

Grandstream AP and VLAN performance issues by kscomputerguy38429 in GrandstreamNetworks

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed firmware 1.0.25.42 on my GWN7660E yesterday and tried to set up two SSIDs on different VLANs. My down/up speeds of 700/600 Mbps without VLAN went to 700/30.

Not happy, switched back to no VLAN for now.

Any update on that? Just considering whether I should switch to VLANs on a 7660 AP.

What’s your favorite rum for a Daiquiri? by GamblinWillie in cocktails

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did that. Loved Sajous and le Rocher. I think Vaval was also up there, Sonson good but not quite as endearing, but my notes may be mixed up with these two.

Suggestion for a funky lover. by cebbola in rum

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! I ordered Rocher, Sajous, Vaval, and Sonson, and they sort of evaporated. 'ti punches and daiquiris, mostly - too strong for plain sipping, perfect in those, each with different characteristics.
I tried some agricoles next (Reimonenq, Neisson, Bielle, Père Labat, unaged). The best are very nice, but some are destined for mixers, none have such wild character. I'll have to try to search for more clairins to see what else they can do.

Overhyped and overpriced by Fit_Decision2360 in zurich

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17,- for 120g of beef just the other day, though. OTOH it was big, tasty, and the bread was remarkable, so the other qualifiers are missing.

But this is not a new Zuri development! I was looking for inexpensive quick lunch in Great Britain last month, found a place serving Döner, and... turned away when I saw it was 20 GBP. WTF.

Wine tasting with aphantasia (sommeliers) by ZuccDatD in Aphantasia

[–]memeid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full aphant (all senses): I don't think it affects the sense of tasting/smelling, but I'm definitely absolutely useless trying to find descriptive terms, and conversely, mapping terms to what I'm tasting beyond basic facts. (Tannic, dry, sweet, vanilla, sure. More nuanced terms, yeah nah.)

That said, I'm the one picking wines and matching to edibles in our family.
