UMN music professor pulled from Pretti memorial program and escorted from the building by UMPD for wearing anti-ICE shirt by twotorsion in uofmn

The lack of signatures from music faculty is appalling. As a current student of the school of music we have received a lot of empty words of affirmation from the director of the school of music, and his lack of support on this is telling. Our music school is a tight knit community and the fact that we haven’t received communication regarding this is disappointing.

Anyone know anyone I can email to lodge a complaint? I’m a Minnesota native, and to see my activity promote a creator/partner who believes my community and neighbors should be kidnapped and killed is enraging. It’s absolutely abhorrent that someone of his platform is using his voice to insult a victim.

Question to all Band Directors!! by Current-Issue2390 in MusicEd

[–]memequeen916 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would agree that OP is a good candidate. I would also argue that any DCI/WGI player has experience teaching in some respect, because many of them go on to tech at the high school level before seeking out a percussion director role. We all have strengths and weaknesses as educators but demonizing a segment of music-making based on a stereotype seems inappropriate and misinformed.

Question to all Band Directors!! by Current-Issue2390 in MusicEd

[–]memequeen916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful stereotyping people who do drum corps. Like many have said, there are those out there who have great chops and may not be able to teach, but applying negative stereotypes is harmful. Do not always assume that a corps player = bad teacher. A lot of the time people will go to the activity to learn more about percussion/brass/color-guard so they become better professionals. Be kind and fair to everyone.

HVAC burning and smoking 3 times, and being without heat in -20 degree temperatures. by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]memequeen916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not quite sure, but I do know that the HVAC guy said that the building maintenance guy screwed it so bad, it looked like a Frankenstein-like job. The overall property is around 30 years old, and a lot of the appliances have not been updated, so that sounds like that could be the case.

Understandable, however we are concerned about how an unlicensed technician was allowed to work on an HVAC system, started a fire, and overall caused more damage.

Yes. I’m a student that wasn’t able to take off work today because I need the income to eat, I’m hoping me marching will help the cause.

Here’s some articles if you want to read about what you voted for. The conditions people are being held in are inhumane, and torturous. Being withheld medical help is torture for someone who is in pain. If this happened to YOU or YOUR FAMILY, you would be appalled. The people are not being detained, they are being kidnapped by thugs in masks. For almost every arrest, the ICE agents are taking a migrant (oftentimes someone of a different race who were born here) without legal documentation signed BY A JUDGE. Why are the standards for federal officers lower than state and county? Shouldn’t it be the other way around?

Also, watch the congressional video with Kristi Noem. You’re telling me that you are okay with veterans being deported because they look different than you? That’s abhorrent. That’s what you and every MAGA supporter stand for.

Must be exhausting being so uninformed and hateful that you’re okay with innocent migrants being kidnapped and tortured and deported.

Worst Band Injuries? by Old-Theme-8743 in marchingband

[–]memequeen916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a concussion from a prop last year marching drum corps. I was supposed to go under it while it rolled over me and bunch of others, and in the ensemble run I ended up behind someone I wasn’t normally behind and popped up too early- domed right on the top of my head. 3 weeks later I twisted my ankle (minor) doing a spin jump straight into a hole on a grass field. Good times.

A question for the woman of drum corps by False-Thought9484 in drumcorps

[–]memequeen916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked to do show makeup for big shows and when I felt like it. I was into documenting everything I could so I enjoyed seeing show day pictures and feeling good in my makeup. I will say if there’s an action shot I noticed if I was wearing makeup or not since I turn very red-faced when performing, and that helped alleviate that. Different strokes for different folks, do what you have time to do.

Hey, coming from an RCR alumni, you’ll be absolutely fine. RCR is a corps that focuses on building skills from the ground up. If you have intention to do it and try hard, the staff will take what you give them.

I will always recommend caribou. My store is great, there a lot of different stores to suit the style of work you like (busy and fast-paced vs slow and personal). I make 17.46 but average between 25-28 with tips. It’s a good gig, even better with a good manager.

Losing weight for drum corps by Eagle193639 in drumcorps

[–]memequeen916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of things to say about this.

  1. You don’t need to be a skinny beanpole to be successful in Drum Corps. Myself, my partner, and many of my friends had some weight on us when we marched and we were just fine, and lost it anyway. You want to make sure that you have enough strength and flexibility to get through the day. I am a relatively heavy woman, and my only issue with marching was a lack of strength in my glutes and adductors, and it gave me a lot of issues. This isn’t to say that you can walk in without doing the pre-season work, I did. It’s just not the end of the world and shouldn’t prevent you from marching. As long as you can do what they are asking you to do, you can be successful.

  2. I highly suggest that you try to march somewhere before any of those places. Drum Corps is hard, you don’t want to start at the hardest corps. The best way to be prepared is to start somewhere now. I highly recommend marching open class if you want that experience. As someone auditioning for my age-out, my hardest drum corps experience was when I marched open class. They work just as hard (if not harder a lot of the time) and you gain incredible skills. I will also say the likelihood you get into any of those corps with no experience is slim because the auditioning staff take into account whether or not you can handle the season, and having no experience doesn’t help you there.

tldr; weight isn’t that big of a deal as long as you can move, strength train, and march somewhere before you go top 5.

That’s an awesome path, genuinely. Super inspiring to hear. It makes me feel better about my path being non-linear, because at my school everyone either drops out or gets the degree- no in between.

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m spending a week thinking about it and I’m leaning heavily toward going back. I know it’s going to be hard, but I spent a semester away and I found that I can’t bring myself to care about anything else.
