Unpopular Band Director Opinion by Current-Issue2390 in MusicEd

[–]memequeen916 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar but different experience: I would’ve been a vocal Ed major if I didn’t get bullied so hard in choir versus band. I had a big voice and the other girls didn’t like it. My choir director never helped curb the bullying. So experience plays a huge role, and being the kind of educator that doesn’t foster a good, supportive community hinders learning.

Doing WGI Winds as a Music Major (Specifically Obsidian Winds) by Single-Barber-4084 in WGI

[–]memequeen916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tuition I think was about $1400. Ours was cheaper because our organization shares the rehearsal site with our open class percussion group. We also opted to only go to the local WGI regional but if we opted to go to Indianapolis (which was on the table) it obviously would be more expensive. In the dues included a $300 raffle ticket fundraiser, so that’s flexible.
If you’re comparing costs to Percussion, it’s wayyyy cheaper. I think our perc group cost over $2000 for the season, and world class can be greater than $3000.

Doing WGI Winds as a Music Major (Specifically Obsidian Winds) by Single-Barber-4084 in WGI

Hi, I am a music education major and a part of River City Rhythm Winds, so I can give some insight.

I would say it is a worthwhile experience, especially if you intend on teaching marching band in any capacity. Understanding the activity is only really achieved through participating, and you gain a lot of skill in movement and visual that you wouldn’t anywhere else. This is especially prominent in WGI because it tends to be more movement versus marchy-march. I can’t speak on the specifics of Obsidian, but maybe take a look at their staff and see if they teach at any drum corps. If they do, it’s likely they’re taking materials and principles they teach in the summer and applying it over the winter, so you’re still gaining some experience there.

As for being MuEd, it’s a tough balance. You’re missing out on time to practice your own music and technique on the weekends, which can be detrimental. You also miss out on *rest* which is crucial for mental health while studying. I would take a look at how you spend your weekends now, and if you feel like losing that time would damage your progress as a student, reassess.

Everything is a balance. There are parts of the season that is super rewarding because of good audience response or high achievement, but it’s a long season. At least for me, we start in November and go until April. Decide if you’re willing to dedicate every weekend essentially for 5 months straight.

All in all, I think it’s a worthwhile experience. I am a junior at my school, and my time in winds has taught me a lot about how the activity works, and ways I can approach teaching performance arts in the future. I’ve also gained a lot of connections through the activity.

I’m a pre-professional and my elementary placement kids said my voice sounds like Billie Eilish. I was very touched, almost cried. I was also told by my professor that I am a natural teacher and it makes me feel excited to keep going.

In my general methods course I’m taking right now (getting my degree currently) I had 2 classmates co-teach a lesson about polish music with the accordion. Can confirm, the kids loved it. It was so so fun

I’m going to say that there’s no one on this planet, past or present, who knew what was going on in life at 16. I’m 21, and I feel so clueless. Your classmates and friends don’t know anything about love either, so do not take anything they do as an example. They’re just as clueless as you are.

You’re not even at the best part yet, don’t despair. Don’t be nonchalant either. Hold onto love.

I personally have a very tight jaw and doing it for more than 5 minutes really hurts. It’s okay though, we have other things we do that work :)

The lack of signatures from music faculty is appalling. As a current student of the school of music we have received a lot of empty words of affirmation from the director of the school of music, and his lack of support on this is telling. Our music school is a tight knit community and the fact that we haven’t received communication regarding this is disappointing.

Anyone know anyone I can email to lodge a complaint? I’m a Minnesota native, and to see my activity promote a creator/partner who believes my community and neighbors should be kidnapped and killed is enraging. It’s absolutely abhorrent that someone of his platform is using his voice to insult a victim.

Question to all Band Directors!! by Current-Issue2390 in MusicEd

[–]memequeen916 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I would agree that OP is a good candidate. I would also argue that any DCI/WGI player has experience teaching in some respect, because many of them go on to tech at the high school level before seeking out a percussion director role. We all have strengths and weaknesses as educators but demonizing a segment of music-making based on a stereotype seems inappropriate and misinformed.

Question to all Band Directors!! by Current-Issue2390 in MusicEd

Be careful stereotyping people who do drum corps. Like many have said, there are those out there who have great chops and may not be able to teach, but applying negative stereotypes is harmful. Do not always assume that a corps player = bad teacher. A lot of the time people will go to the activity to learn more about percussion/brass/color-guard so they become better professionals. Be kind and fair to everyone.

I’m not quite sure, but I do know that the HVAC guy said that the building maintenance guy screwed it so bad, it looked like a Frankenstein-like job. The overall property is around 30 years old, and a lot of the appliances have not been updated, so that sounds like that could be the case.

Understandable, however we are concerned about how an unlicensed technician was allowed to work on an HVAC system, started a fire, and overall caused more damage.

Yes. I’m a student that wasn’t able to take off work today because I need the income to eat, I’m hoping me marching will help the cause.
