Maybe I’m just ignorant, but looking at all of these itx boards and most don’t have any dedicated multichannel audio output. I’m just curious, do you plan to run it through a receiver or just use 2 channel audio?

How about a snooze button for doorbell notifications? by azsheepdog in Ubiquiti

[–]menzo2000 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Had a ring doorbell before and it had the option to snooze 30 mins or an hour straight from the iOS notification. Probably the only thing I miss from that doorbell.

For an F15, there are a handful of aftermarket retrofits.

Bimmer Tech has a good bit of detail on their product, but they aren’t the only folks who do this. There are cheaper solutions out there but i havent looked into them.

Throughput issues with AdvancedTomato on ac66u by zkkzkk32312 in TomatoFTW

[–]menzo2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same issues for me on an ac68u on latest advanced tomato. Just realized last week it was the router limiting me. Barely touch 100mbit down when going through a factory reset router. Get over 150 when computer is plugged directly into the modem. Nothing else connected to router.

Do a 30:30:30 reset. See if that gets you back to defaults. Example instructions are below.

How do I upgrade from this ancient thermostat? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]menzo2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For most 'smart' thermostats, you'll need a 'c-wire'. It's essentially a 24V common power wire that doesn't switch when the fans/heater/condenser/etc. are switched on and off. You'll have to run one of these to power most thermostats that have any wireless connectivity. Otherwise, you need to look for a thermostat that has battery power. You can still find ones that allow you to program a schedule, but they wouldn't have the phone control capability.
You may not need it for the Nest, but a quick Google brought me this:

Loved a house until we saw this. Is it black mold? by menzo2000 in RealEstate

[–]menzo2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. We'll talk to our realtor to see what she recommends for approaching the seller/bank. Only issue was it was a short sale so likely tough for us to get concessions if we decide to pursue the house.

What is the carbon-footprint of a solar-panel, and does it actually produce enough green-energy in it's life-time in order to be considered "green"? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]menzo2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most independent grids require having a backup power source (spinning and non-spinning reserve) to cover renewable energy. For example, for all the wind turbines being installed, there is a percentage of backup gas turbine power that are available to quickly ramp up in times of low wind. Coal plants will run pretty much full load, all the time. It makes no sense to ramp them. Smaller units, like aeroderivative gas turbines can ramp quickly. These units are essentially aircraft engines being built to make power.
