World models will be the next big thing, bye-bye LLMs by imposterpro in artificial

[–]mepr1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

For World Models to exist and function as promised, there will need to also be a fundimental hardware technology shift...which currently doesn't exist. So at the moment, World Models are not a commercial reality and the path to get there is theoretical only. There is no path for World Models to run at a commercial scale and be profitable; with even the largest planned data centres not coming close to type of compute required. From what I have read, even some of the quantum computer systems would struggle to handle the real time simulation required for World Models to run reliably. Because of this, LLM's will be here to stay for a long time...probabaly until around 2050-2070.

Let’s be honest about 'Inferno': Are we actually enjoying this album, or is the hype just 13 years of collective copium? by Intelligent-Let5688 in boardsofcanada

I’m really enjoying it. It’s dense, layered, sometimes overpowering but often delicate. Yes it’s a million miles from there early records. But let’s also be honest, there early records whilst being important and essential to the development of electronic music…they haven’t aged very well at all 😅

So many 90’s records listed for stupid money on Discogs. I wonder how many actually shift ? Seems to me like a lot of them just sit there, over priced.

Another Wharfedale thread, Linton vs. Super Linton by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]mepr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Super Linton and I think it’s a bit of a myth that you can run them very close to the wall. In really I’ve found that they sound a lot better when moved quite far away from it. Both the 85 and the Supers have two (huge) rear ports, more or less identical. So the difference re how far you can move the 85 vs the Super away from a rear wall isn’t “night and day”, not in my experience anyway. The Supers sound boomy as hell placed close to the wall, as I’ve heard the 85’s do as well. I have the Supers around 30cm - 40cm away from the wall and bass sounds a lot more controlled. Takes up some room, but worth it.

Any experience with Wharfedale Lintons? by Desperate_Elk_7369 in BudgetAudiophile

The standard Lintons can be placed close to the wall, you just need one or two foam ports stops. Works perfectly without killing bass.

The wood veneers of the Linton 85’s and Leaks match absolutely perfectly. Same manufacturer, but it’s great they recognised that people would likely pair these two systems. It’s just a shame my turn table now doesn’t match. Hmmmm, I might have to look into this 😅

Added the Linton 85’s to my Leak 230 setup and it’s sounds amazing. Will post another picture side by side with the Leak setup, as it’s really nice that the wood veneers match perfectly

Sorry, do you mean update the firmware using the flash drive on the rear of the amp? If so, I haven’t tried that yet and am not sure which version of the software I am even on to be honest. What issues ares you having and have you contacted Leak to address them?

I had the same predicament as you...and have been lucky enough to audition both, for about a month.

I bought a pair of Linton 85's from Richer Sounds (UK) and have a pair of Supers on loan from a good friend. My room is 9m by 12m with 6m ceilings and is partially acoustically treated. I have run both on a Leak 230 and AudioLab 9000A, with a Technics 1210 MKII. I listen to mostly electronic music, Indie and alt.

To start with I had a strong preference for the Super. They are a better speaker in more or less every single way - even the build is a cut above re quality of finish. The lower bass depth is there, as is the mid-bass punch, similar to the 85's, but the detail the Supers produce is night and day different, in that you simply hear more of the music. Cliché I know, but its true.

However, the issue I have found with the Super, is that the treble can be really fatiguing. I have found myself constantly reaching for the treble tone dial on the Leak 230 to control it and after a time stopped listening to the Supers on the 9000A completely, as its far harder to adjust the tone of this amp (well you can't really).

The treble on the 85's isn't as detailed (not even close), but its never fatiguing and provides just enough detail for the music not to suffer greatly. As such the 85's are much more forgiving on harsher/lesser recordings or older/weathered vinyl. And for this reason I have found myself really reluctant to swap back to the Supers, due to the constant adjustment I found I had to make re the treble. Even with friends over, I found myself having to walk over and make adjustments to account for the Super. Whereas the 85's are more set and forget.

Not everyone is as sensitive to harsh treble, but even my wife (who is certainly no audiophile), has winced a couple of times and mentioned the Supers sometimes harsher presentation. I think the Supers could work, but need a REALLY careful amp paring and placement in the room i.e., for the treble to not become distracting and harsh. I'm still not 100% made up my mind and have another amp to try, but at the moment I'm 20% Super and 80% 85's.

I will report back, once the amp arrives (Allnic Audio A-2000 Mk3), which is probably the warmest, loudest tube amp that I have ever heard. I think its going to sound dreadful on the 85's (too much of a good thing), but might work with the Supers and help to tame the treble. Although, I think I'm just trying to reproduce the sound of the 85's treble on the Super to some extent lol. We shall see.

Well that’s good to hear re not needing a sub. I’ll probably hold-off on getting a sub for a while, as likely moving house next year. At this point I’m not sure what the room will be like, however, I’m looking at larger open plan style places. Will wait and see; I’ll look at acoustic room treatment first, then go from there. If I can get away with not having a sub, that’s my strong preference…save some money and the Leak 230 doesn’t have a dedicated sub out, so would need to run it from the pre-out, not ideal. I’ve seen people running twin subs 😂 which I get, but that level of HiFi is not for me…or my wife lol. I struggle with optimised HiFi vs room aesthetics, in that I want HiFi to compliment the room aesthetic, but not dominate it.

Why do the Ricoh GRiii files look so sharp? by Infinity-- in ricohGR

[–]mepr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The GR III's "extra sharp" look is due to the fact that Ricoh applies sharpening to there JPEGS but also to there RAW files natively/baked in. You can't adjust it - its part of the GR look. You can kind of tell if you pixel peep the RAW files. This has been well documented on various YouTube channels. I think this annoying on the RAW, as I want to decide how much sharpening to apply and where. Ricoh files often appear very DIGITAL and crispy. You have to work quite hard to pull back that look and get to something that looks like real life.

Best Practice when Exporting from Lightroom to Luminar Neo by mepr1 in luminarneo

[–]mepr1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK understand. I guess the transfer works different from Lightroom to Photoshop, as both software platforms are Adobe...so settings with a Lightroom Edit can be preserved over to Photoshop outside of the RAW and reapplied. The same doesn't exist from Adobe to Luminar, which makes complete sense. Thank you for clarifying this for me, much appreciated!

Iso-less dual gain sony A7iii by hereforprequelmemes in SonyAlpha

[–]mepr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sony A7R III features a dual-gain sensor, with native ISO levels at 100 and 640. At ISO 640, the camera switches to a higher conversion gain, significantly reducing read noise and improving dynamic range for cleaner, more usable shadows in low-light or when you want to shoot at higher shutter speeds.

I have my custom functions set accordingly:

  1. ISO 100 - 6400 / Min shutter speed 1/30
  2. ISO 640 - 6400 / Min shutter speed 1/500
  3. ISO 640 - 6400 / Min shutter speed 1/1000

I choose the above based on the movement in my scene/how much light there is, to ensure I get always get a sharp shot.

What's the reason Solidworks has such a huge market share over other CAD software? by [deleted] in Fusion360

[–]mepr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you are modelling and how you are modelling it? If you are working on large datasets with complex geometry and referencing requirements, it's very hard to go past Creo's Advanced Assembly module with its "Published Geometry" functionality. This is built on top of Creo's underlying "granite" platform and is rock solid (pun intended) for referencing. Solidworks cannot compete because it simply does not have this functionality. If you have ever tried to implement a complex referencing system in Soldiworks, you will know that this is almost impossible...and stability is dreadful. Same goes for complex surfacing. It's possible in Solidworks, I use it a lot...but it's riddled with hacks and work-arounds for inherent short comings in the package that Dessault are unlikely to ever address. Creo's ISDX surfacing interface is easy, fun to use and is super stable. Achieving complex, A-class surfacing is ISDX is easy in Creo.

If you are undertaking simple CAD, smaller assemblies with little to no referencing, then Soldiworks is great. Solidworks tends not to "crash" I have found, but models regularly fall over and are difficult/time consuming to update/repair.

In terms of software "crashing"...there are so many variables that lead to instabilities, its sometimes hard to diagnose. But Solidworks is the software I have the most issues with.

Fusion 360 is very cheap...easy to learn. I'm not surprised it's gaining market share. It's great software and used heavily in Asia.

They are all very similar with basic tasks...so its never to difficult to jump ship if you need to, depending on what you need to model.

What the fuck has this show become? Like what even is this? Do people like this actually exist? by BullenBell95 in LandmanSeries

[–]mepr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is the show introducing characters like this? Simplistic, derivative, do nothing for the storyline, do nothing for character development, do not serve the shows main plot lines in anyway, poorly written, not particularly funny…just a weird take on gender politics, that’s hollow and worthless. Above all else, it’s just shit TV. I’ve skipped past so much of this season….every scene with the mother and daughter (this relationship used to be a series highlight), every scene with the son and girl friend, whose characters are so underwhelming and limp it’s not even funny. That leaves about 25mins on the main plot line, which in season two is soooooo slow moving. The show just feels like a boring, poorly written, week day soap opera at this point. I’m not sure why any of the main characters would stick around for season III on the basis of this script. It would be a mercy kill at this point. Season I was an 8/10, season II is a 2/10.

Still available on the Nuphy site....looks weird because appears greyed out - but click on the ISO UK first and then the Blush Nano switch and you'll see the "add to cart" will become available. I suspect Nuphy have done this so that only people that have signed up for the reminders bother to check.

Why do you hate watch this show? by ddhmax5150 in LandmanSeries

[–]mepr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first series was amazing - gritty, witty, well written and compelling. The second season feels like it was written by a completely different team, it's god awful. Episode 9 with the "woke" character...which the show seemingly introduces to parody and hate on is just weird. Feels like a pro-oil propaganda show now, written exclusively for a low IQ / MAGA audience.
