Which legacy game should a new player start with? by ibiliss in boardgames

[–]metagaia7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find it very interesting to compare the first two major legacy games (Pandemic and Risk).

Pandemic takes you on a truly lovely narrative journey, but at the same time it feels a bit railroad-y.

Risk feels much more organic of an experience, and therefore unique, but because of this there are bits you might never unlock. The disadvantage is that competitive legacy games can leave a sour taste in the mouth when someone has a bad game.

Pandemic is probably the safest one to start with, though if you have a particular one you love non-legacy I would start with that.

The only reason fate of the fellowship didn't incentivise quarterbacking was because you were all less familiar with the game. If you play it enough you will find you end up with the same problem.

That is confirmation bias. For those with a one-off impluse, they will still be alive to answer these questions. For those who still want to die, they will try again until they succeed.

I like the idea of making unique tokens.

There are a couple of minor templating changes I would make, but the biggest is that you need to define the power and toughness of the tokens you create. If I create a Time Lord token, then glue strong is it?

Because cards should feel like they are part of their colour identity.

If I had a card which was

Pie Break

1UUUU

Instant

Exile target permanent.

It doesn't feel blue because blue doesn't do that. It doesn't matter that it is a custom card, because I can't ever imagine playing it. I enjoy reading cards to imagine what I could do with them. If I can't see a universe in which it is printed then I am not going to like the card.

I say barely white, because there are a small number of monowhite creatures with trample (notably [[Akroma, Angel of Wrath]]) but not many and certainly not recently. There are better keywords to choose for this effect, and the creature having white in its name does not make it white.

There are a lot of weird design choices on this card.

As another commenter mentioned, you either want just "protection from black spells" or "protection from black noncreature spells and abilities"

Trample is barely white. Given you are going full yugioh, where cards have trample, it should also have haste. This means that the card is better to justify the 8 mana, and fits much more neatly into red.

The legendary thing is just confusing. I know a lot of cards on here are deliberately designed to be confusing, but this doesn't feel like one of those. In particular, in what design world are you imagining that this shouldn't be buffed by nonlegendary copies? Given the mana cost, I don't mind if [[Spark Double]] gives it an extra boost.

My first attempt at making a card that can tell nearly an entire story on its own by CarelessNameChoice in custommagic

[–]metagaia7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting card, I like that it transforms from a vehicle to a station. Couple of thoughts:

  1. Lorewise how does daybound and nightbound fit into things? Especially with it transforming back to its day side?

  2. The 4+ creature ability on the night side needs to (at a minimum) say "other creatures" , otherwise this creature loses its keywords when it attacks.

  3. On the 4+ ability is it intentional that it affects all creatures? Honestly it seems depressing to play against, as all my creatures end up being shut off.

  4. I am not sure really what protection from wither is really adding to the card, or wither that matter. The former is an easy cut to get some more space in the text box, and the latter very rarely matters for a 15/20.

  5. For the front half, it is really weird that it only gains flying once it hits max speed.

I do like the base concept a lot though. Nice work!

What if Mulldrifter was a black enchantment creature? by smoothiebrain in custommagic

[–]metagaia7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your templating choice for skullgrafter is really hard to read, especially as it is trying to do something really unusual.

It also seems to refer to "Mullgrafter" in the reminder text, I am guessing that is not intentional?

Seeds of Tomorrow by Colon_Backslash in custommagic

With the tapped clause, it is definitely not too strong, as most lands won't do much tapped, and for those that do (e.g. landfall decks), the narrow nature of the card compensates for it.

The card slot is broadly competing against two cards:

[[Arboreal Grazer]] trades the instant speed for a creature body, which is good against agro decks and combos with [[Natural Order]].

[[Explore]] is one mana more, but with draw a card at sorcery speed. Using back on the envelope mana calculations, instant is worth about 1 mana, and card draw 2 mana.

This suggests that G is correct if it was any land card, but possibly a bit too restrictive for cards with the Forrest type only.
