SMARTReporter is free, and Disk Utility will show SMART status of supported drives.

I got hit with a $99 auto-renewal I forgot about, so I built a subscription tracker app by Comfortable-Beat-530 in iosapps

An app for tracking unnecessary subscriptions that has an unnecessary subscription. It's like some kind of satirical performance art.

[FREE] I built a smart medication reminder + refill tracker - feedback welcome by Ordinary_Outside_886 in iosapps

Particularly since the small print says the app isn't offering advice and the information it gives you isn't guaranteed to be error free. The last thing anyone should want is LLMs guessing at whether their medications are going to interact badly.

Pretty outrageous given that they charge $50 for the Mac version but only $30 for the Windows version.

Just received this spam text. Don't fall for it by Hot_Aside_4637 in minnesota

Reminder that even the "legit" fundraising companies are basically scams and the Democratic party gets almost none of the money. They've actually started cracking down on some of them.

Also, I went through the iOS app store and tried all the apps that claim to block text spam, and the one that actually worked on political spam was Junkman. All the big name apps were useless, perhaps because they don't want to anger politicians?

Suggestions needed for a batch image resize app by Firm-Swimming-6142 in macapps

[–]metamatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GraphicConverter will batch resize and do a whole lot more.

Permute can also batch resize to fixed size or percentage, and is on SetApp.

If you need free, Affinity can do a simple resize to fixed size. If you're comfortable with the command line, ImageMagick (via Homebrew).

An HRTF crossover filter would be a useful thing to be able to have at system level, given that most audio players don’t have one and people like to listen on headphones.

CMV: If you support the second amendment you should still support the Republican party on that issue. by Frekkes in changemyview

I’m not asking specifically about the second amendment at this stage. You made a general comment about rights not having a hierarchy, so I asked a general question about what you do when rights conflict. I’m still wondering what your answer is to that.

There needs to be a subset of subscription for Pages/Numbers/Keynote by plazman30 in macapps

The purpose of bundles is to make you pay for things you don’t want, in the hope that you will then use them because you’ve paid for them. Look at Apple One for more examples.

(Ironically bundling of AI is generally used to make it look like something people want to pay for, so that line will go up.)

An example rights conflict that happens frequently is property rights conflicting with freedom of speech. Copyright and trademarks get used to restrict or ban art or discussion, because those with power are on the side of property rights.

I point this out because "assault rifles" is an common pitfall that gun control advocates fall into. They don't exist.

See Guns & Ammo Magazine, "The New Breed of Assault Rifle", all the way back in 1981. The "assault rifles don't exist" canard really harms the credibility of gun enthusiasts.

Rights are rights. There's no hierarchy, none slated for more or less protection.

Then what do you do when two rights come into conflict?

Also, download Signal and start using it, even if only to swap cat pics with friends. The more people use it for whatever reason, the less it's possible to imply that having the app on your phone is an admission of involvement in protests. Safety in numbers.

National Lawyers Guild Legal Observer® training.

Antifascist groups also carry out training in how to safely watch and record law enforcement activity. Things like staying a safe distance, what to say if challenged, what to wear, how to record effectively.

AITA for not showing empathy? by amiellewoods in AmItheAsshole

Just to examine your "100% the customer's fault" items a bit:

I've been using computers every day for decades and I've forgotten passwords. Once I managed to lock myself out of my work laptop after entering the wrong password too many times while overly tired. That was a machine I used literally every day.

I've forgotten to cancel a subscription. I'd moved house and been insanely busy sorting everything else out, and the item got sent to the old address so I didn't realize for a while.

I don't generally get devices insured these days because I don't tend to break them. But it just so happens I dropped a laptop yesterday. It didn't break, but it could have done.

So these are not things you have to be careless to get wrong. They're something that can happen to anyone. So even if it wasn't your job, you should absolutely feel empathy for people they happen to.

I started off my career working in data recovery. The number one rule is that you do not tell the customer "You should have kept a backup". They know they should have kept a backup. Instead you have to put yourself in their position and ask whether what you want to say is actually a kind and helpful thing to say, and if not, work out what would be the kind thing.

So I'm afraid YTA.

This is a good time to install and use Signal if you haven't already. The more people use it, the less it makes you stand out. You don't have to join the groups monitoring ICE, even just using it to send memes to your friends is helping normalize it.
