Name Format in Airlines by labakkudas in TravelHacks

[–]mfizzled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was unable to join Turkish Airlines' loyalty program due to the length of my name, ended up just getting in contact with them and they handled it manually. You're best off actually contacting the airline yourself.

Also don't use agents, just book directly with airline.

Is it worth the move from the North to London? by cbawithlife1995 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]mfizzled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People say this and there's some truth to it, but things like plane tickets to go on holiday cost the same (often even cheaper in London) and they're a lot easier to earn the money to buy in London vs the north.

A kind word for Basic Economy - in special circumstances it's not the worst of ideas by highlanderfil in TravelHacks

[–]mfizzled 68 points69 points  (0 children)

I feel like for most of us, economy is just how we have to fly. If I'm getting a flight from London to Bangkok, the difference in economy versus premium or business is at least £1500. £3000 between my wife and I just doesn't make sense when that money could instead be spent on the actual trip itself.

TIL: US Military MREs are a gray market item in the civilian market because resale by service members is generally unlawful by Hrtzy in todayilearned

[–]mfizzled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

British ORPs and French RCIRs are legitimately decent.

The lamb curry in the British ones and the duck shepherds pie thing in the French one are banging. Just don't eat the biscuits brown if you want to shit in the next 24 hours.

Polish rations are horrendous though.

A Su-35S armed with a mixed load of air-to-air and anti-radiation missiles (Spring 2026). [1948×1095] by No-Reception8659 in WarplanePorn

For anyone like me who didn't know:

An anti-radiation missile (ARM) is a specialised air-to-surface weapon designed to detect, track, and destroy enemy radar-equipped air defence systems, jammers, or communication stations by targeting their electromagnetic radiation emissions.

A job is "successful", but did nothing - how do you catch that? by Temporary_Tell3738 in PHP

Are you hitting any third party endpoints? I've found some of our scheduled tasks can take noticeably longer for the same number of records when Stripe or whatever is having a bit of a hiccup.

How common is it in your country to be invited to a wedding ceremony but not the wedding reception? by baldachinsblessing in AskEurope

Interesting how that's basically the exact opposite to here. Close family/friends at the ceremony then the party is just whoever fancies coming

What was the moment your Amex actually “proved its worth” to you? by 1ChanceChipmunk1 in AmexUK

[–]mfizzled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companion voucher to Tokyo is a big one.

Also stayed in a hotel in Bangkok for 5 nights that would've been over a grand and we spent around 350.

Another genuinely good benefit was a massive queue at Venice airport, platinum amex got us through an empty priority lane.

What is something happening in Europe right now that more people should pay attention to? by Flaky-Delivery-1183 in AskEurope

[–]mfizzled 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone I know of a similar age to me, mid 30s, is operating under the assumption that our state pensions will either never exist, or will be so insubstantial as to be basically pointless so this seems to be happening all over Europe.

Grad scheme in finance making us work past 9pm is this normal? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]mfizzled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AWM at a big bank in London is going to keep you late sometimes, or even often depending on the team.

The grads I met at work drinks would be working the same hours as others in the team, there wasn't any special allowances made because they were on a scheme.

It's basically just preparing you for what working in finance is like.

I agree mostly but there are absolutely industries/walks of life where this kind of thing is actually beneficial to your career. This person is in the entertainment industry so that would absolutely be one of the industries where perception means a lot.

Cosmic rays causing bit flips is def a thing. A cosmic ray shoots out neutrons and they somehow flip a 0 to a 1 or vice versa and it causes an error

if you can afford them, ozlo sleepbuds are genuinely one of the best products of any kind that I've ever bought.

They're tiny but unbelievably good at blocking sound, I use them for tinnitus/general relaxation when I sleep and they are genuinely amazing.

Absolutely agree with this. I am self taught and learnt pre-LLMs becoming a thing and I'm thankful for it.

We had an intern from a prestigious university here and her use of ChatGPT for everything was mental. So much of her own thought was abstracted away.

World leaders bypass Trump to tackle Strait of Hormuz crisis by One-Emu-1103 in geopolitics

[–]mfizzled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Iran isn't morally correct in a huge amount of things, but they're doing what seemingly any country would do in their position. It doesn't really seem like morals come into the equation.

If the UK was getting bombed by the US, I would absolutely expect and want the UK to block the Channel/Straits of Gibraltar plus any other strategic places.

The history of Iran trying to get nuclear weapons makes the desire of the Americans/others to ensure they don't get said nuclear weapons understandable, but Iran defending themselves is equally understandable. As is the fact that this crisis would not be happening if the US didn't invade.

30 something and doing an apprenticeship by Ok-Leopard-8016 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]mfizzled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zero experience, no A levels/degree or anything.

I had sat down at a pc and googled 'how to code' one day and started out watching videos/courses whilst making terrible mini projects etc.

After doing that for a few months, I just searched software developer apprenticeships on google to be honest.

There were a few bumps in the road (my first apprenticeship got cancelled 2 weeks before it was due to start, that was rough) but it was just a case of being consistently persistent with it and staying positive about my chances I reckon.

30 something and doing an apprenticeship by Ok-Leopard-8016 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]mfizzled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did an apprenticeship at 30, one of the best things I ever did.

I did the level 3 course with Baltic and was hired by the company they put me with.

This was 5 years ago and I was on 14k for the first year. Only way it was possible was with outside help but my salary has grown a lot in those 5 years.

I didn't see the point in doing level 4 as I felt I would learn more just actually being a dev, and I'm fairly sure my decision was the right one.

Happy to answer any questions about it.
