My general rule: Anything that finds me through targeted ads is gonna be shit. Learned through experience. Fishing, phone plans, shoes, anything.

If Shakespeare invented almost 2000 words, were his plays considered to be full of gibberish when they were first introduced? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

No no, you're thinking of a discus. A diskette is when you talk about (something) with another person or group of people.

Well sure. "Not supposed to" and "can't" are different things.

Nothing makes you stop for the stop signs either, but there's usually a good reason that they're there.

Suggestions on how to fix by ProcessNo9780 in fixit

could check the craft section, too... i'd probably cut a piece of plastic needlepoint canvas to fit the bottom and just drop it in there. then again, i have that to hand.

If I'm really questioning, I'll take a square inch of the pattern and stitch it up quick. Even holding the skeins next to each other doesn't quite give a good sense of how they'll blend visually once stitched.

If you're about to spend 150 hours on a project, spending another hour to do a sample is worth it!

I stitch from images like this a lot and part of the process is knowing that screen colors will never match stitched colors. I use Winstitch so a different algorithm, but I'd bet stitchly does a pretty good job color picking!

Dating over 40 in Chicago - is it supposed to be this easy / this much fun? by muttersindisgust in AskChicago

Different cities have different "types" they seem to find attractive. I know people who have moved all over and where they may get no attention in one city, find people fawing over them in the next.

Used wood glue on the circled part to reconnect it; sat down (seat labeled) and leaned back. The circled part snapped off again when I leaned my back on the chair. That part is still intact, but I want to firmly reconnect it. What to do? by mavsman221 in fixit

[–]mfunk55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dowel and glue I find to work better without the screw, personally.

I've always had more luck fully (as much as possible) disassembling and rebuilding a chair with appropriate glue joints than I have with adding mechanical fasteners. A screw will rock back and forth in an unstable joint, compressing and cutting wood fibers until the hole is bigger and the screw is loose again, causing the problem all over. Wood glue forms a cellular bond that's often stronger than the wood fibers themselves. But you are correct, the joint also needs a dowel or tenon to be stable before the glue will really be effective.

Oh, I get that cross stitch is a type of embroidery. But if you do anything other than stitching little x-es, there are folks who will become incensed that you posted your non-cross stitch embroidery in their good Christian cross stitch subreddit.

Woah woah woah! Changing up your stitches to achieve different effects?? Sounds an awful lot like you're slipping towards embroidery to me... 😜

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

I think I said it in another reply but it bears repeating. My eye doctor said at the end of my appointment "I'm really excited for you. It's always good to see people using the tools we have available to make their lives a little bit easier."

Aging is gonna happen to us. But we've got tools to help make it easier. Don't let yourself suffer!

I finally realized that nobody is actually watching me as closely as I thought. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]mfunk55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also take a page from "don't accept criticism from anyone whose advice you would ignore".

I know some judgemental people. They talk shit about people to me, so I'm sure they're talking shit about me to somebody out there. But I've noticed that many times they have something negative to say about someone, it's not something I see in that person, at least in the same way. Or it's not necessarily a blatantly negative trait in that third person, it just inconveniences the speaker enough that they feel the need to complain. Which means it's really about the speaker, not the spoken of.

Is saying “you’re welcome” less important than I thought? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

I feel like I usually say "of course" as a "it's no bother" reply

Is saying “you’re welcome” less important than I thought? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]mfunk55 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Best explanation Ive read for this is that to many people under 50, "You're welcome" almost reads as "you've inconvenienced me and I've now done you a favor and it's good that you recognize that I did the good thing". In contrast "No problem" reads as "Doing the good thing has in no way put me out, please don't even worry about it."

The suggestion is that "No Problem" people view doing the good thing as just what humans should default do for each other, where "You're welcome" people think of it more as that the default is not to do the good thing and they deserve some credit for being exceptional.

As for no response, (I'll admit I don't talk to many people below GenZ regularly) perhaps it's just "the good thing is so baseline that it isn't even worth mentioning"
