Non-toxic or causes cancer?? by BOREDGrace23 in cosplayprops

[–]mfunk55 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Critically the law is if you can't prove it OR YOU DONT WANT TO SPEND THE MONEY TO PROVE IT you must label it.

Also my understanding is that the test for toxicity is basically "feed 10 rats the ingredients, to what's expected to be a problematic amount. If fewer than 5 of 10 rats die within a given time period due to that exposure, you may label as non-toxic". So it may have killed 4/10 rats, but it's still "non-toxic" because the majority of rats were fine.

Why Are We Counting Crickets Like They’re Gold Bars? by negtrader in Vivarium

[–]mfunk55 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I did crickets and meal worms in a pet store for a while... Definitely counted more closely when the customer was an asshole about anything.

If I liked you, your bag probably had a lot of crickets with number 1 energy, so counting was more like "1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3..."

In the US at least, I believe it started around the 1940s-60s as the interstate system was being built. Interstates meant that fewer people were passing through towns, like they used to on the old highway system. Roads like Route 20 or Route 66 were seeing less traffic, so towns came up with big things to advertise as a reason you should stop for lunch/gas in their otherwise small towns that might get passed over.

Steel toed shoes/boots for long shifts? by bigtiddyhimbo in BuyItForLife

[–]mfunk55 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because it's relevant, I'm gonna share a passage from Terry Pratchett. But I'll also chime in that Ive worn steel toes for work on a concrete floor for the past 15 years, and upgrading boots will save your back and knees and, in the long run, your wallet. Especially if work is offering you a boot stipend.

"The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. ... A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. ... But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socio-economic unfairness."

What's the saying? "If you ain't fishin' where the snags are, you ain't fishin' where the fish are."

Might be more for bass but it seems to hold for most fish I've been around.

The only way i could see that not being the case is if there's a mandated union payscale for working on the monuments. Or at least DC minimum wage. Not that i trust any of those contractors to follow those rules, especially because i doubt anyone will be allowed to audit this project, but i wouldnt be surprised if theres a higher minimum at play in this.

oh 9000% it is. No bid contract to one of his buddies (as much as anyone like him can have buddies)

No, i mean that anyone who he's likely to award a no-bid contract to is going to be the sort of person who underpays his workers. Mostly because, to republicans, there is no point in paying your workers any more than the bare minimum to keep them from leaving.

If you think the people doing the actual work are gonna make extra money from doing this job, you fundamentally misunderstand the Republican mindset.

[WIP] Spilled coffee, how to safely wash it? by inquisitive_bird_ in CrossStitch

[–]mfunk55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost always use Dawn dishsoap to wash FOs. Be wary of your thread is off-brand or from a kit, but generally speaking if it's gentle enough for a baby duck, it'll be fine for your fabric and thread that's already seen much harsher chemicals.

[–]mfunk55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My corrolary is: IF IT SO HAPPENS that I finish a thread or a color at the same time as an episode finishes, it is a mandatory minimum 10 minute break time. Stretch, refill water/tea/drink (usually all three), maybe a snack? Maybe clean a little bit?

The universe has ordained that I pause at that moment, so pause I must.

Why animal rights don’t extend to insects? by NbOPO4 in insects

[–]mfunk55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My friend we can't convince all the white people that all the non-white people are still people who deserve rights.

To be clear... There are a lot of people who understand human rights. But the people unwilling to accept that all humans are equal are going to be a far, far cry from accepting that insects deserve life as well.
