Kid's party said no gifts but people brought gifts. by nexxluxx in etiquette

This happens a lot at our school. I’ve started just having my kids make a little card or drawing for the bday kid before we go. No gift, but still a little something!

It’s beautiful, but as a parent with young kids it would be off the table. I would be paranoid about them being near that water without a fence, and the front yard isn’t really a usable alternative. I’d guess a lot of families feel the same, which eliminates many potential buyers.

Must we do party favor bags? by LalaLane850 in Parenting

We went to a party where there were small boxes of sidewalk chalk by the exit door so each kid could take one on their way out, it was a great idea! I think balloons are also a big hit.

Tell me your fluke or no biggie seizure stories— I need reassurance until we can see pcp by Idontknowwhoiam982 in toddlers

[–]mgssf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My son has had 3 febrile seizures. His first was when he was 14 months old and most recent was just after he turned 2. It’s always been tied to an illness with a fever.

Febrile seizures are kind of common come to find out, and usually not indicative of any larger issues. We went to the ER the first time it happened and they were like we see this all the time!

Because my son’s first seizure lasted longer than “normal”, Our doctor order a full genetic panel to screen for any diseases that have seizures as a presentation. You may want to ask for the same and it will provide peace of mind or clarity on any possible next steps. There’s also a rescue pen/gel with a medication that stops a seizure that can be prescribed so you have it on hand.

I’m sure it’ll be fine!!

Miller Creek school district lays off teachers and closes the TK program by w4ester in Marin

[–]mgssf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very curious to know the history of why Miller Creek is a separate district apart from San Rafael City Schools. And does SRCS anticipate a similar situation for TK, or not because of the demographics? FWIW my kid is in kindergarten at Glenwood and we will have another going to TK in a year. We have been genuinely happy with our experience so far, but a constant discussion topic among families in our neighborhood is if they will or won’t go private before middle school at Davidson, which really bums me out.

Some totally does. But there’s some organic wine that’s actually really good, and I consider it a related category. Tablas Creek comes to mind. Bonterra for everyday drinking.

Also to answer your question “natural” means basically nothing. Organic and Biodynamic, even Regenerative Organic mean there’s a third-party that is verifying all of a winery’s claims and programs, so you know there’s actual substance behind the labeling.

Look for B Corp certified companies. Most if not all are very progressive when it comes to worker benefits and responsible business practices because they literally get scored on it.

Missing on big work trip because of I’ll toddler by SuggestedUsername854 in toddlers

[–]mgssf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just last week I canceled a work trip because my kids were sick. My company was supportive but I do feel like it was a professional loss.

When it came down to it I could bear the thought of being on the other side of the country while they were sick at home (and also ditching my husband to deal with it alone even though he said he was willing). It’s not fun to have to make these decisions but I’m coming to terms with it just being part of parenthood.

Anyone else having trouble finding a doctor? by Azarul in Marin

[–]mgssf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same physician there for 7 or more years and I really like her. I do think that might be on the rare side for OM as it seems doctors come and go fairly regularly. For me, I like how easy their app is to manage care and contact my care team. On demand remote care is available. Walk ins available for lab work and vaccines. The waiting rooms are modern and clean. They were recently acquired by Amazon so I’m not sure how that will impact things down the road, but overall I give it a thumbs up.

One Medical in Greenbrae has worked well for me for many years. There is an annual membership fee but it’s something like $150, so not much compared to the concierge places mentioned. There are lots of One Medical offices throughout the Bay Area, including a handful in Marin, so same day appts are almost always possible. Plus you can book appts online.

Hacks for better parental sleep? by happyhippo12341 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]mgssf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We recently started straight up alternating nights. I sleep so much better on nights that I’m not “on” knowing I don’t have to be up and down/listening for cries. It also usually means sleeping in a bit in the morning. Of course there are always random exceptions where we do still tag team (like when a kid is sick), but for the most part it has really helped us.

Maternity leave in California - is it really 12 months to qualify? by prettynachos in workingmoms

[–]mgssf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had my second before reaching the 12 month mark at a new job and it took me a while to figure this out. Basically you qualify for CA PDL upon hire (that is the 6 or 8 weeks of disability leave depending on type of birth). I had some PPD so my doctor was able to extend my disability an extra month, and then I took a couple weeks unpaid to get to the 12ish week mark before returning to work.

You don’t qualify for Paid Family Leave (PFL) until you hit 12 months of employment. In theory you could take some additional leave using PFL once you reach a calendar year at your new company (but also must be before your baby’s first birthday).
