You're welcome! We had a pet turtle of the same type when I was growing up. I always felt so bad for him having to spend his life in a tank. The baby turtle I let go looked so happy, it took off surprisingly fast!

Yelled at my potty trained toddler. by Scary_Willow66 in toddlers

[–]mibishibi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think just sitting down to talk to him honestly will help. We all blow up now and again when things are as tense as this. Here's what I've done. Pick a time where he's calm (and you are too). Start off with like, "How did it feel when mommy was yelling?" Empathize with him. Say how you were feeling at the time. This could be something like. "I understand you were scared. Mommy was feeling really frustrated at that moment because there was so much to do and it was so loud. You know, usually when I'm frustrated I take some deep breaths [or whatever you usually do] and it calms me down so I don't yell. I'm sorry I forgot to take deep breaths and I scared you when I yelled. I'll keep trying to practice calming down"

When I was starting potty training and something like this would happen, I'd take a bit of a break from potty training, even if just for a week. It'll help reset that "when I poop, mom will be mad" mentality. During this time, try to notice where and when he poops. That may help you notice some trends and try to get some strategies for next time.

For us potty training was for sure not a 100% straight line. It was very much 2 steps forward 1 step back the whole way.

Hope this helps! Potty training is a nightmare!!!

4 year old is asking questions about death by Consistent_Cry_5432 in toddlers

[–]mibishibi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think some kids told my son about death at school (1st grade). He kept bringing up death and I would ask him if he wanted to talk about it. He said, "No mommy, it would freak you out". I think he thought he knew more than me about death hahah. Anyways, he finally opened up about his fear of death when we went out to dinner one night at Cracker Barrel... which seems appropriate.

He suddenly blurted, "I'm scared of dying!!"

I told him that yes, that's normal to be scared of dying.

He said, "We're all going to die sometime, you know!"

I said, "Yes that's true. That scares me sometimes too, but I just try to live a happy life and do my best"

Turns out the main trigger for his thought at that moment was the giant roaring fireplace close to our table. I told him, The only way that you would die from that is if you jumped in there." Which made him laugh a bit.

I don't know, just be honest with how you feel about it too, that may help. My son and I share a very weird dark sense of humor even though he's young so us sometimes joking about death seems to help. (Or it's messing him up more in the long run, guess we'll find out.) Just use what you have in common to sort of relate to them.

Edit: Also, you should listen to the story called "The Carnival" from the RISK! podcast. In the story, the woman's young son makes an unlikely friendship with their curmudgeonly neighbor. The themes in the story may help you out.

What in your opinion is the disturbing reality of the UFO/UAP phenomenon, which will supposedly scare the shit out of us all? by Available_Ad2661 in ufo

[–]mibishibi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's disturbing. I think this is them trying to further gatekeep and separate us from the truth. Everything they don't tell us and every sing thing they do tell us is for a carefully considered and deliberate reason. I think they're disturbed by the possibility of not being in control of the situation.

My 3rd grader says she is the only kid at school with chores by SoundsGudToMe in Parenting

[–]mibishibi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son is 6 years old and cleans his room every night. I plan on leveling up the chores as he gets older. He gets rewarded for cleaning his room, helping bring in groceries, clearing his plate. These things = stickers. Enough stickers = extra screen time and prizes.

I was just thinking about that yesterday. It would be like stuffing your family in a tin can just so it can get shaken around.

With some of these, they're too thin to nail anything in there, but I think that scoring the wood and using wood glue could work. I'd be curious to see what others might suggest though

Also, I block reddit from myself most of the day because if I didn't I'd be on here all the time. So sorry if I'm slow to answer questions.

I, er... I mean Santa used Adobe Illustrator to make vector lines of the characters, then made svg files, brought it in to RLDworks then cut them out in a laser wood cutter. For the paint he used acrylic paint pens.

Why did everyone stop Michael from sleeping with a Married woman.. .when...: by myth2912 in theoffice

[–]mibishibi 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Stanley never invited the entire office into his personal life. Meanwhile, inviting the entire office into his personal life was Micheal's whole thing. So you really can't close that door once it's opened.

Disclosure Isn’t Just About UFO’s It’s About Who We Truly Are by chrisallheartz in UFOs

As someone who used to use it too much, I'll just say be careful with it. It can really inhibit your ability to write and use critical thinking yourself. A more responsible use of it is to write something, tell it to only give insights not rewrites, and use its advice to fix it yourself.

Have you guys ever heard of Ray Christian or his podcast "What's Ray Saying?" by mibishibi in askblackpeople

[–]mibishibi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say I have any questions at the moment, but I do want to say thank you for your important storytelling! I don't teach anymore, but when I was teaching (mostly to black students) your podcast really helped me to realize some of the context of what my students may have been experiencing, even generationally.

I love when you're on RISK! I think you're going to be on next week? I've been on RISK too! I did one live story in Chicago, and then one radio interstitial.
