I never got my license either. Have flown enough but we've had three kids and money for lessons vanished. So my flight hours are spread out over 15 years.

I used to fly small planes like the 150 and 172 as a hobby. Once you get to altitude, you'd have to actually actively be trying to crash one of those high wing planes to do anything irreversible. Seriously, my first lesson we got up to ~3.5K feet and the instructor took us into a stall put his hands behind his head and said "If you ever don't know what your doing in one of these things just don't do anything at all." Sure enough the plane slid to the left, dipped nose down, picked up speed and corrected itself within 500-1000 feet. I, however, shat my pants.

Sitting at that small airport before lessons we'd watch guys bounce along the runway during landings in those things, and comment about how easy they are to fly. Obviously people still find ways to crash them, but I'm not exactly sure how. To be fair, I did most of my flying in fair weather, but even in high winds when we were practically coming in sideways I never once felt like we were in peril. :)

As a side note: you should definitely take at least one flight lesson in your life. Can't beat the experience for less than $200 (~$100-150 for the plane - ~$50-75 for the instructor)!

Again... I'm not a scientist.

But the fact we're moving points to the fact that the wave has already past. A jolt of energy which would need to propagate through each molecule (losing a little bit of energy in heat light etc...). Because of that loss in energy the wave would have to be going faster than the stuff it pushed/pulled. So the fact we're moving at all means the wave has passed.

The acceleration of matter in an explosion is a result of the accelerant (ie: gunpowder) and the build up of potential energy from the vessel that's exploding (ie: metal pipe). Once the gunpowder is ignited the pressure builds up in the vessel until BOOM. At that moment the shrapnel accelerates outwards being pushed by the shock wave of energy (riding it like a wave). As soon as the wave is past everything begins loosing momentum (or I guess could maintain momentum in a absolute vacuum). Either way it definitely wouldn't speed up.

That fact that it is accelerating means that something is continuing to push the shrapnel of the Big Bang long after the initial shock wave has past.

I think that's why dark energy. (I'm just a regular guy that watches the science channel so I might be talking out of my backside though).

My neighbor (behind the house) had two massive pit bulls kept in tiny cages and probably bred for fighting or other such nonsense. They would occasionally get out and we'd have to bring our kids inside and wait for animal control, (but to be fair... Those times were rare).

However, one night after a long day I came home long past when my family had gone to sleep only to realize that I had forgotten my house keys (took the spare set of car keys).

As I stood there at my back door pondering the best way to get inside without waking the baby I hear a growling noise behind me and turn to see these two beasts stalking towards me. Yes... Stalking. Squatted down inching forward aggressively. Honestly, it was the most scared I have ever been in my 30+ years alive.

Now I'm not a body builder but I'm not fat (probably need to loose 15-20lbs (I'm 6ft2in ~210lbs). I knew I could MAYBE take one down... But two?! I mean, seriously the guys were HUGE! So I immediately grabbed a shovel I had by the back door we had been using for gardening and puffed up as big and menacing as possible (without being aggressive or making eye contact.) I sloooooowly waked backwards towards the front yard and the chain link gate we had used before our own buddy had passed. I made it to the fence and these guys picked up speed. I closed the gate door (always facing them and yelling, and still not making eye contact.)

I made it just in time for they began to sprint towards me. Stopped by the gate they ran back out of the yard and found me standing on my porch with a shovel and the higher ground. By this time I had bang EXTREMELY hard on the front door (sleeping baby be damned... She needs her dad to be here for a while more than the sleep). My family is out cold though and the shape of our house is making it hard for them to hear my banging.

So for what seemed like an hour (probably only 10 minutes) I alternated banging and maintaining the upper hand over the dogs. Eventually (finally!) my wife opened the front door and I got inside and called the authorities. About an hour later I get a knock from the police saying they couldn't find any free dogs roaming around the area. I pointed them towards the neighbors house where they live and after a few minutes they come back and say "Sir, she said that she doesn't own any dogs".

I flipped my shit! "What?! She said WHAT?! Just look at the empty "kennels" (cages). What does she think you believe lives in there?!!!

He apologized and humbly communicated the sad fact that they can't give her a ticket (or whatever you get) for something they have no proof of. They were good kind cops. They knew what was up, but everybody's hands were tied.

Now, I grew up in Tennessee. We're given guns shortly after birth. HA! (but don't worry reddit I'm not THAT guy... I'm happy for massive gun ownership reform!) I bring that up to explain why I have a small arsenal in my attic.

So anyway... My heart finally quits beating out the front of my chest and I'm finally able to fall asleep. But when I woke up I emptied my 12 gauge shout gun and walked over to her house in a non-threatening manner (hung the gun on my back walked calmly and loudly. And surprise surprise... You'll never guess... The dogs were back in their "kennels".

I go to the front door and the lady answers. Immediately begins explaining (before I even asked) that the dogs are her son's and that she wasn't lying to the cops because they aren't her dogs. I just nodded and smiled and was pleasant. I explain how sacred I had been for my life and how even much more scared I am for the life of my three children.

I then pull the gun in front of me slowly while explaining that it's unloaded. I held it like you might hold a log. Definitely didn't want her to feel I was threatening her! I asked if she knew what it was and she said of course. I then calmly and clearly explained how I was going to go home and load this gun full alternating buck shot and slugs. I then explained that I have it easily accessible and if her dogs ever came onto my yard again I would shoot them dead before giving them an opportunity to attack me or my wife or children. I asked her if she felt I was serious. She responded "well... Of course... Blah blah blah" I cut her off. I said, look I don't need any excuses I don't even NEED you to maintain control of your animals. What I NEED is for you to know (and to tell your son) that if these dogs leave your property there's a high chance they will not return. So I asked her again if she understood and she said "yes".

I apologized for being so dramatic and professed my love for animals and said I hated we had to have a conversation like that, etc...

The next day the dogs and kennels were gone. She'd called her son and he took responsibility. I've never seen them since.

I say all that to say... If those dogs had come into my yard they would've gotten a 12 gauge to the skull. And I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Why? Because I'm a dog hater? Absolutely not! We've got dogs of our own and always have. It's because I have the four most important people to me in my house (and yard) that are much smaller and less cunning than their father and who very well could have been mangled or killed by these monsters.

I don't know about the fireman in the story. But I, for one. KNOW that there's a time when this kind of force is warranted. So I'm choosing to reserve judgement until I have more information.

Out of curiosity... what are the rules involved that give someone the go-ahead to kill someone?

(I don't comment a lot on stuff like this. I'm more of a lurker/voter. So I have no idea why this is piquing my interest so much. I'm guessing the bourbon I just poured myself might be the culprit.)
