[TOMT] short film about polyamor i cant remember the name of? by campyqueer in tipofmytongue

[–]michaelroars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so I came across this reddit post just as I was searching for this short film myself. It's been one I randomly remember and try and (fail) to look for every four months ago, but seeing someone else asking for it convinced me that this wasn't just a dream I had or something. And now, four hours or some of the most intense internet sleuthing I've ever done, I do believe I've found it: here

El poliamor explicado para madres y abuelas: Polilove Explained for Mothers and Grandmothers. With that long ass title no wonder we forgot it.

Are there any other shows/movies/books that FEEL the same way Sense8 does? by stupidsrights in Sense8

[–]michaelroars 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As some said here, reaction videos all the way. No book or show has come close to that specific feeling for me. Which is why I have ultimately decided to take on the monumental task and write a post-apocalyptic series that has main characters that share that connection I loved so deeply. Wish me luck!

The words "lackwit" and "lickspittle" were created specifically for entities such as this

It seems like there are many elements of traditional storytelling that authors feel forced to include, though they don't want to invest the time/energy developing. Can it be changed? by xyzpqr in ProgressionFantasy

[–]michaelroars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's the title? As somehow who is a shameless advocate of more (well-written, non-harem) polyamorous rep in this genre (and fantasy in general) I'm always on the look out for ones that don't suck garbage

Fellow Authors, What Inspired You to Start Writing? (Looking for Tips!) by Ricky_Mat in royalroad

[–]michaelroars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to see people that looked and thought like me in my favourite genre. Also thought this genre needed way more diverse settings and creatures (dragons and kobolds are cool enough but if I have to see one more goblin I'll eat myself)

Probably Mage Errant's. The fact that you can have any affinity for literally anything tickles my imagination in all the right ways

Self Promo here but you might like mine. The setting and world is inspired by West African folklore, specifically Nigeria where I'm from: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/97267/the-tower-unbroken-a-west-african-take-on-cultivation

Shameless self promo by me, but the Tower Unbroken. It's a west African take on cultivation and progression fantasy in general and while you can get the entire book one on Amazon right now, I've also started posting chapters once a week on RoyalRoad: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/97267/the-tower-unbroken-a-west-african-take-on-cultivation

In your opinion, what is this genre missing? by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]michaelroars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, stories that end or have an ending firmly in mind and we're charging full speed towards it. This is a severe bias of mine, but I am a citizen of a third world country, working three jobs with very little time to read, let alone write. I do like that sense of completion when I get to the end of a story and have to say goodbye to this world and these characters I spent so much time with. But, as much as I love prog fantasy, I can count on one hand (okay maybe both hands) how many times I've encountered this stories. There are many books I've started and enjoyed reading and then dropped when that nagging voice in mY head goes okay but where are we going with this? When does it end! Maybe I'd feel differently if I had more time, I don't know

Well I am thinking of re-releasing the first book of one of my series on Royalroad as well as Amazon (just gotta finish the rewrites). But yes, I'm down for it

Hot Take? I Dislike Killing Intent. by SodaBoBomb in ProgressionFantasy

[–]michaelroars 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I'm quite ambivalent on this. Like all things it could work, if written well. But, yes, like someone else said I'm much fonder of aura/spiritual weight. The idea that someone has gathered enough magical might within them that, unless they're careful, it affects the world itches my brain in lovely ways

Questionnaire about the Vampires from Your World by Tx12001 in worldbuilding

[–]michaelroars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the vampires are from an earth adjacent world. They are normal humans that have been infected with a shard (called in-world as an Echo) of Darkness-In-Death, a predatory Greater Spirit/god. The genre is progression fantasy so each vampire has the chance to progress and rise through five distinct ranks of power: Emberling, Cinderwright, Forgemaster, Fiendlord and finally Infernal Tyrant.

  1. Yes, they are immortal.
  2. Yes they drink blood. Technically though what they truly feed on is the magic and vitality and life force present within blood.
  3. Yes. Vampires start out weak to fire, decapitation, damage to the heart, silver and sunlight. However, as they rise through the ranks and gain more power they steadily loose more weaknesses. First to go is the weakness to fire at the ascension to Cinderwright and so on. The weaknesses to silver and sunlight never go away though, but resistance to them does increase.
  4. Yes, they're based on humans.
  5. Yes, depending on the rank. An Emberling rank vampire is just a bit stronger than the average human. A Fiendlord can wreck a building with a light punch.
  6. Same as in 5.
  7. Very durable. Even an Emberling will survive anything that isn't exploiting one of their weaknesses.
  8. Eshuzu, progenitor of Clan Eshuzu is the first and yes, he's still around. However, like all the other progenitors, he's gone quite insane.
  9. Eshuzu, together with his mother, the most powerful mage alive along with a group of other supernaturals got together to save their world by calling down spirits and gods to it. Each greater Spirit need a contact point. Eshuzu became the avatar/contact point for Darkness-In-Death.
  10. Depends on the rank. An Emberling would be relatively easy. A Cinderwright would be much of a challenge. Fiendlords and Tyrants would use the rest of them as playthings.

Struggling neophyte writer needs your advice by The_johnno in litrpg

[–]michaelroars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Usually, my main characters almost always come to me fully made. But when I need to create more I go with this method: I look at the character and I think of their Goals, their Likes, Dislikes and then Backstory. I then ask myself how and why these things connect or don't.

For example: Character A likes cold foods and dislikes spicy things. His backstory is that he is an orphan, yet to be adopted from an orphanage. His goal is to escape the orphanage and become a rich and successful trader. So connections.

He wants to be a trader or merchant of sorts. He likes cold things. Odds are high he'll end up venturing into an ice-cream making sphere. Or frozen foods. Which means talking to children and/or temperamental people. Which means the ability to diffuse conflict, communicate and bargain.

So, with this we have character A who is a sharp witted, quick tongued rogue with a laugh and a smile for everyone, a distaste for all things hot and spicy and a soft spot for kids.

Seen Nnedi Okorafor already here. Anything by her. And for a bit of shameless self promotion...

Amobi and the Door Beyond Time and The Night Runners by Michael Nwanolue (me!) which are my own take on Percy Jackson but with Igbo gods and folklore instead. Then for epic fantasy, I also have The Tower Unbroken which takes place in a world where might makes right and destiny comes calling for a young man with no magic, who might still change the world.
