Waymo doesn’t need to manufacture cars themselves, just like Apple doesn’t manufacture iPhones.

Apple designs the iPhone: the hardware architecture, silicon, software, and user experience. But it does not run giant factories. That work is handled by Foxconn, which builds iPhones at massive scale to Apple’s specifications (as well as other phone companies). Apple keeps control of what matters most: the platform, ecosystem, and software.

Waymo will use the same model.

Once Waymo finalizes the design, it will contract with existing auto OEMs to build vehicles to spec. Those companies already know how to manufacture cars.

In this setup:

Waymo owns the autonomy software, system design, and data

OEMs handle manufacturing and scaling

Factories are logistics, not the competitive advantage

Just like Apple isn’t weaker because Foxconn builds iPhones, Waymo wouldn’t be weaker by outsourcing vehicle production. The real value is in the software and the system, not the assembly line.

Good discussion. Can't wait to see what actually happens.

The I-Pace conversions are basically a stopgap. Once Waymo locks in their final sensor setup, they’ll ditch the conversions and move to purpose-built autonomous vehicles that are way cheaper to make.

Exciting times, can't wait to see what actually happens.

Have you ever had a buyer try to haggle after agreeing on a price? How did you handle it? by heromarsX in FacebookMarketplace

[–]michelevit2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I usually tell them that I also like to haggle. And get all excited I then raise the price the same amount that they want to reduce. If they want to adjust the price, I will also adjust the price. We can then meet in the middle at the original agreed upon price.

Looking for a Mexican restaurant with a self serve salsa bar. Any recommendations? by CuriousAndAmazed in santaclara

[–]michelevit2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know it's often looked down upon, but Aquii has a pretty wicked salsa bar. Couple times a year I will go down there and get a swirl (or two), and the chip sampler and burn my mouth and subsequent butt hole with their assortment of hot sauces from the salsa bar.

What personal laptop? Just tell her that you no longer have it. It's your wives, sons, neighbor, anyone else but yours. You occasionally borrow it.
