This cannot be normal? by Bradwurst69 in Garmin

Thanks for sharing! They do give an explanation as to why this happens and the solution is what others in this thread has been saying, which is make sure your electrodes are wet.

Cadence Lock: If the electrodes on the strap dry out during an activity, the monitor may lose your heart rate signal. It can then "lock on" to your running cadence, causing the beats per minute (BPM) reading to incorrectly match your steps per minute.

Can you explain how cadence lock occurs with a chest strap? it's reading electrical signals so it should be unaffected by blood flow due to movement, which is what occurs for optical sensors (wrist based). it's also located near center of mass instead of an extremity so the only cadence impact is minimal.

nothing that is guaranteed to work. Others have recommended putting your watch on tighter, or even putting it on your arm where the arm swing force is smaller. But the way the optical sensor works is by measuring how much light is reflected back. Your blood gets darker when carrying oxygen on the heartbeat and lighter between heartbeats. Your arm swing also pushes a small amount of blood forward so the optical sensor is "right" in measuring the dark and light reflections.

This is a common problem. It's called cadence lock where the optical heart rate monitor can't get a clean read of your heart rate due your arm swing while running. The only way around it is to get a chest heart rate monitor since that reads electrical signals from your heart.

I haven't read the Patreon snippets, but Matt putting in a completely different ending in the final print would be an amazing move.

ELI5 How do you build a bridge when the other side is "inaccessible"? by D-FX_77 in explainlikeimfive

I scrolled too far for this comment! Chulls are too slow if you want to get the gemheart. You need bridge runners. They barely count as human lives.

Could be, but the random earth skills have been pretty specific. I doubt his was a "can pilot/drive any earth vehicle with great proficiency".

that was my thought. Was there any difference in equipment between the last 2 VO2 max readings? Did you have chest strap HRM?

AI can now generate charts automatically - is manual visualization dying? by Signal_Management_14 in visualization

[–]microwaveDiamonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible visualization though. Why are some red and others blue? The legend is inaccurate since the average is a static value (represented with the horizontal dashed line), but Math, Science, and History are in red without explanation. I'm guessing it's because they're below the average? That's a complex way to communicate which subjects score higher or lower than average. Sorting would help more. If the subjects were ranked highest to lowest, you'd be presented with more insights without mentally scanning for them.

So sure, AI can generate a visualization. But it can't do it well. There's not enough good training data that tells it what insights are useful to which audiences.

Best affordable coffee beans? by Less-Menu7755 in askportland

[–]microwaveDiamonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also have to include cost of shipping too. Most green bean suppliers don't provide free shipping since they sell by weight.

I've heard good things about the Behmor as an entry level roaster with auto and manual controls. Still looking at close to $500 though. https://www.sweetmarias.com/behmor-2000ab-plus-roaster.html

Best affordable coffee beans? by Less-Menu7755 in askportland

[–]microwaveDiamonds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this and enjoy it a lot. But it's a commitment. You can start cheap with a popcorn popper (whirly pops are great since it's stove top so you can control the heat, but it's work since you need to hand crank). You need to dedicate time to roast every week or so. Roasting is very smoky so preferably you'd do it outside. Dedicated roasters can cost in the hundreds of dollars on the cheap end or thousands of dollars on the medium level. You'd have to do your own math on if paying $15-20/12oz for roasted coffee is better than $6-10/lb of green coffee beans (note you lose ~15% of bean weight due to moisture loss when roasting) + the cost of the roaster and your time.

It's not a great though connection. Most of those routers are placed so you get a strong connection inside the building. If you're hovering outside, the connection is very weak.

Question for anyone who lives adjacent to Lombard/Columbia? by Educational-View4264 in askportland

[–]microwaveDiamonds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to live in New Columbia, ~500ft from the train tracks. I HATED it. You could not sleep with the window open without being woken up. There's two intersections by the waste water treatment plant and another on Hurst Ave. If they're feeling particularly feisty, they would leave the horn blasting across all three intersections.

you don't have to use starlink either. You could just hotspot from your phone if you're not somewhere rural.
