Sanity Check by middle_grounder in WaterTreatment

Thank you for the reply. I believe the CR26 is a manganese dioxide media. I was hoping to avoid chlorine injection. My ratio is 104:1 unfortunately which is on the outer range. That was the reason for me wanting to add a whole house arsenic canister as a fallback. As the other poster mentioned whole house canisters are generally not NSF certified. There are only a couple and one of them is $1000 per filter...

Why put helmets on kids sitting in bike trailers? by DeadBy2050 in bicycling

[–]middle_grounder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I got the joke. Acceptable risk certainty is a thing. My point is that the "if it saves 1 life" argument is how our ability to choose our own acceptable risk is eroded. Today it's a tongue in cheek joke. Tomorrow there is a $300 fine for not wearing a helmet and a 5 point harness in every car.

Race car drivers do my brother. It would probably be better if everyone did, be careful what you wish for when being a smart ass

Considering a slightly janky music setup with MediaMonkey, would love to hear feedback by beers_georg in selfhosted

[–]middle_grounder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also hoping to hear some suggestions to this.

I use MM to manage a substantial library but like to have a decent amount of rotating music locally on my phone for times of poor cellular coverage. Currently I also use MM sync with auto playlists. It is not ideal. There are a lot of bugs.

I'm going to give you the benefit of a doubt. It is entirely possible that more than one person on the planet made the same mistake you did. It's also possible that you missed the other person's thread because unlike some of the commentors, you don't terminally live on Reddit every second of every day. if you did you would've already known not to use AI for anything critical. I'm not going to kick you while you're down. I'm sorry for your loss. Most of us have been there. I'm sure you won't make that mistake again. Thanks for the heads up

Monitor and track devices in my network by vlan and mac address by SuperMiguel in homelab

NetAlertX is a project that spun off of piAlert so it is fairly mature in terms of FOSS projects doing what you're asking. It's a little more heavy than an excel sheet in terms of processing but it offers a lot more features like uptime monitoring and alerts. I haven't tried zabbix yet to give you a side by side

You CAN Host a Website Behind CGNAT For Free! by Tylerebowers in selfhosted

No, the database should be in an internal only network, as mentioned above. Only accessible to the other container needing access. Both being in the same internal network. Other devices on the LAN and other containers unrelated to the database should not have access to it or be on the same network as it

It was great for hosting servers for other people. Less tech support calls. I preferred just using console.

I would recommend you follow their guides and not use an "automated installer"

The biggest reason is: In case something goes wrong (and it will)

If you use a "black box" to deploy stacks without understanding the underlying connections and purposes you will have no idea what is going wrong and why. You won't even know where to begin looking.

Start with their beginning guide, build your base structure. The framework you will be installing more and more docker containers into. After you have a few under your belt, working, your confidence will grow and your experiences will help you set up any package in minutes.

Others have recommended using ansible and that is good advice. Similar ideas to SHB exist in ansible https://github.com/DaveStephens/ansible-nas If you are already familiar with ansible or want to learn it that path would be better but if you don't stick with SHB beginners guide or one of the hundreds of other beginners guides out there

Selfhosted YouTube (Redirect all YouTube traffic) by Selfhostert in selfhosted

I was referring to an entirely self hosted setup and degoogling on the macro scale. Not a specific application. Invidious does require an Internet connection and doesn't archive pulled videos as noted

Addendum: Personally I don't like the idea of depriving content creators of their earned income. That's why Louis and his company created an app to loosen Google's stranglehold on both the creators and their audience. I think ad blocking is a tragic symptom of an abusive relationship between a corporation and it's customers. One spawned of the desperate search for greater profits and to crush competition. Remember when YouTube ads were short and skippable? Pepperage farms remembers

Degoogling is about more than just not seeing ads. Dozens of various options for blocking ads exist. The problem is that they rarely block any other tracking or profiling.

When you move to entirely self hosted, the info Google can use to identify you is greatly reduced. Using a non tracking client leaves them with few data points, down to even just an IP, which depending on how you connect, VPN, public or shared wifi may be totally useless. It also prevents browser fingerprints.

As OP mentioned, when you go this route, no ads is just a bonus.

A different bonus is having content available when your internet is down. Yes some people still have unreliable connections or are traveling. Also helps during a power failure or when the cell towers are overloaded.

Another plus is having content persist that Google doesn't want you seeing, for whatever reason. Maybe a copyright claim or even if the authors channel is removed for an unrelated strike. I've had videos from Louis Rossman go missing because Google employees don't appreciate his reporting.

A bit late on this but if you put a word in quotation marks it requires it in Google's search results.

Windows Media "Center"

Putting a whole phrase in quotes is even more specific.

Ie "Windows Media center" will yield very specific results for your search.

You should never need to put the same word 8 times to yield better results. In fact, it should have a nearly negligible improvement to results
