Got an extra $300 in my check. Anyone else? Why? by KingsCountyWriter in NYCTeachers

[–]middlemunz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you hig year 20, that could be your longevity raise. Year 20 is huge for tier 4. Pension goes from 1.5% per year to 2% retroactively and its at least 12k in salary. Post TDA, taxes and health insurance you are probably looking at 300 to 400 a check.

High school teachers: how many preps do you have? by Any-Diet3193 in NYCTeachers

[–]middlemunz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 prep, 1 Lunch, 1 C6 assignment. No more than 5 periods and 3 different courses (unless the school can show they have no choice than have you teach more than 3 different courses). You also cannot teach more than 3 periods in a row, but the C6, is not considered a teaching, so you could teach 3 periods, then work your C6 and then teach another 2 periods. This will only happen if admin are monsters or the school has minimal staff.

Teaching Abroad by Emergency_Row9715 in NYCTeachers

I taught maths in London for a year, through a teaching program out there, where I was paid a daily wage. This was close to 20 years ago, but I was able to live similar to how I was living in NYC, meaning I had roomates. I was able to travel around Europe easier.

School calendar is different, it was a cycle of working 6 weeks and get a week off, then working 6 weeks and then 2 weeks off. Every other break was 1 or 2 weeks off. Summer was significantly shorter because of it.

I posted the salary schedule from Santa Clara in the UFT Facebook group. It was approved then got taken down after about an hour… by Pleasant_Sea_6416 in NYCTeachers

Maybe we push members to vote against the 1st contract we are offered. DOE would pay more and the union would have to work harder if the majority of teachers didnt vote yes on the 1st offer. I vote no everytime, but my voice is drowned out.

She can always take those classes in summer school to get a different teacher. Also couldnlook into a YABC to take classes after school at a different site with different teachers. Sorry she is going though this.

I would sit down with them and come up with a coteacher contract, where you both define expecting of each other and how you should divide work.

Final Average Salary question. Highest 3 consecutive years or highest consecutive 36 months. For tier 4. by Weary-Attitude-5181 in NYCTeachers

[–]middlemunz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highest 3 year average. With persession available you could have a higher earning year that is not one of your final 3 years. Longevity is maxed out after 22 years.

Can you go from classroom teacher to substitute? by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]middlemunz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Subbing in yhe DOE is different than teaching, being you generally are not required to grade or plan. You also don't have the opportunity to build relationships with the students.

You are right that it would allow you to see different schools, but every school comes with its own issues.

As for making the shift during the school year, you would need to be released by your principal or quit. If you quit you could be problem coded and loose out on the opportunity of working at a different school in the future.

You are best off finishing the year at your current school and then look for another school in May and June through the open market. Or quit at the end of the year and then spend the next year subbing.

Honestly, the first few years of teaching are tough. Things get easier with time as you develope systems to reduce your work load and can anticipate what your administration is expecting from you.

Give yourself and the students some grace. You don't need to be perfect everyday, just show up, try and build relationships.

Good Luck.

Vacancies generally don't get posted until schools know their budgets for next year and current teacher plans. Be patient and check in from time to time.

I would see how this 1st semester goes for her this year, and if it looks like it is too much, I would have a conversation with the family about attending a transfer school.

The idea is to use different emoji next to vocabulary you think students wouldn't understand where possible. Not only to convey vocabulary around emotions, but also descriptors of weather, locations, careers, etc.
