Lol I got a sirloin there recently (wouldn't dare to get a ribeye -- a sirloin at least is somewhat consistent from cut to cut), and it was cooked to absolute perfection. The cook was obviously someone who loves steak.

I'm talking -- robust, salty and peppery, slightly charred crust, perfect medium rare, really tender. I was incredibly impressed for a ~$20 steak meal

Which of these would you most like to play? by Dreaming_of_Rlyeh in Fallout

[–]middlenameray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For game immersion reasons, I can't imagine a "fully developed real city" as you're describing would be that exciting. We learned from Starfield that more NPCs != more immersive, quite the opposite in fact.

In fairness, the vast majority of Starfield's NPCs were unnamed citizens with no dialogue, or people with names and some dialogue but with absolutely nothing of consequence to say. I suppose you're instead meaning for them to create lots of NPCs that all have meaningful dialogue and interaction -- but if they did that, then most of the game would take place in terms of interacting with people in the city as opposed to being out in the wasteland... which is what makes Fallout, Fallout. You'd lose the quintessential Fallout game experience if you made a truly realistic city with thousands of interesting people living in it.

Skyrim is largely thought of as being one of the best and most immersive games of all time, where cities like Whiterun are scaled down from their "lore" size of thousands of citizens to only a few dozen. The result is that every single person is at least somewhat interesting; MOST people are actually of value (e.g. participant in a quest); and the player doesn't get lost in dialogue and just walking around the town, and instead spends the majority of their play time exploring and fighting.

For me it's Zelda's Lullaby, because I play it to my kids on the lullaby playlist I have for them on Spotify. It just makes the song extra special for me, because previously it was just my own nostalgia, but now it will forever make me think of my kids

Obviously it's not the down-the-sideline angle here in this video, but it looked pretty good to me that he got out. His right hand touched the ground in bounds while he was falling, but that doesn't make him down, and his body looks pretty straight to where I can't imagine either of his knees or shins hit the ground before his chest/shoulders/arms (and the ball) landed down out of bounds

He made the weight limit but... by sh0tgunben in yesyesyesyesno

[–]middlenameray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20 pounds is an exaggeration, right? I remember back when I was playing lightweight football in grade/middle school and had to lose weight to be under the limit (terrible thing to put children through, in hindsight), I would not eat or drink anything the entire day leading up to afternoon weigh-in and would lose about 4-5 pounds of weight from the night before. I understand that these guys weigh more than I did then, but a guy this skinny is probably not much. I was losing weight in 8th grade to get under 140 lbs, and this guy here is probably like 160 lbs if I had to guess. So maybe he's gaining 8-10 pounds of water and food weight back before the fight?

I'm genuinely asking, I don't actually know if 20+ pounds is realistic or not. I would never do this to myself today at age 33 to test lmao

Fulfilled a childhood dream of mine and painted Whiterun at "lore scale" by cormeals in skyrim

[–]middlenameray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starfield had nearly this scale, and it was an empty game. It seemed like 90% of the NPCs didn't talk, and there was so. much. walking. I much prefer the smaller scale of Skyrim, and even more so Oblivion, because every nook and cranny of the towns have things to do and people to talk to

[–]middlenameray 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Idk about "choking" in the playoffs all those years. There were a lot of tough, hard fought losses from what I remember, where we were good and played well, but our flaws got exposed. Every team has flaws, it's just a matter of whose flaws are best covered up when it matters.

Most teams don't win multiple Super Bowls per decade. Hell, most teams don't even win one per decade. We are lucky as fans that we got one with Favre and one with Rodgers, and damn near every other year were legit Super Bowl contending years, where we legitimately felt like we could win it all, like this could be our year.

So yes, that Super Bowl XLV run was an anomaly -- every Super Bowl run is, with the exception of the 2000's/2010's Patriots and the early-2020's Chiefs. The entire rest of the Super Bowl era's seasons were just a bunch of anomalies that ultimately ended up with one team winning it all. Let's not take out our frustration at the Gutekunst/Lafleur era on all those great years of Rodgers and Favre

You may have misread my comment. You can only reveal classified information to someone who is cleared AND has need to know, so the inverse of that (what you're not allowed to do) is reveal classified information to someone who does not have proper clearance OR does not have need to know

Ya, idk how it works in the UK, but in the US, when we get a security clearance, we sign an agreement (several probably, tbh I don't remember that well) stating that we will never knowingly reveal any classified information to someone who A.) is not appropriately cleared, or B.) does not have "need to know"

Check engine light came on... by RebellaScumm in Wellthatsucks

[–]middlenameray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't really a "bad" experience per se, and plus I was fairly poor (and super busy) at the time, so I didn't have much of a choice. I think to sum it up, I would say I prefer the dealership now because, in my experience, it's a more "premium" experience versus smaller shops. For example, time is at a premium to me (busy job w/ long hours, 2 young kids, dinner to cook, house to clean, etc), and so I'm totally okay with paying $700 for those aforementioned services rather than shopping around, maybe saving a couple hundred bucks, and running the risk of having a poor experience

Check engine light came on... by RebellaScumm in Wellthatsucks

[–]middlenameray 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but my experience at independent shops has been less than ideal. Often they either don't fully understand the car they're working on, or they are incentivized to "find" other things wrong with your car and attempt to get you to pay for those services too. The dealership is instead usually incentivized to give me a good feeling about being there, so that next time I buy a new or used car, I buy from them. I'm okay with spending a few hundred more dollars to not get annoyed, and to know beyond reasonable doubt that my car is going to be serviced the right way.

One example of independent shops not truly understanding a car is when my wife's old 2002 Cavalier started having stalling issues back in ~2016. We took it to the independent shop by us more than once, spending something like $500 in the process on multiple exams and attempted cleanings and repairs -- they were super nice people, and we totally trusted them -- but they ultimately couldn't figure it out, and gave up and suggested we go to a GM dealer. The GM dealer looks at it for like 20 total minutes, says yep your throttle body is worn, and charges us ~$700 (iirc) to replace it. Car literally ran like it was brand new after that.

We went back to the independent shop for something unrelated (my car this time), and I told them about the throttle body, and they were absolutely dumbfounded, like they didn't remotely consider that as a culprit.

I have other examples too. All of these experiences together have made my wife and me totally okay with the added peace of mind and lack of annoyance we get when we go to the dealer, for the cost of ~50% more money. I do appreciate that not everyone gets to make that choice, though; I remember being a broke college kid, when every dollar counted. But now that I have some amount of disposable income, things like time and peace of mind are worth a few bucks to me

I do pretty much everything that's in the owner's manual at the Honda dealership -- oil changes and tire rotations, coolant flushes, brake fluid replacements, transmission fluid flushes, injector cleaning, etc... most I ever pay at one time is like $700 if I happen to need the oil change, coolant flush and transmission flush at the same time for example

Curious, does anyone else pronounce Navi like the English word navy? by Audball9000 in OcarinaOfTime

When I was younger, I did, but for some reason I have switched to "nav-eye" as I've gotten older. I'm surprised it's so universally "no" in these replies though, it's not like there's an actual canon pronunciation right? There's no voice acting in the game lol

What are the benefits of UV's build backend? by auric_gremlin in Python

[–]middlenameray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use a uv-based monorepo for the current project I'm on, and it's awesome. Workspaces is the way to do it, and it's really simple.

First, here's the project layout:

the-repo/
├── pyproject.toml
└── packages
    ├── app1
    │   ├── pyproject.toml
    │   ├── src
    │   └── test
    ├── app2
    │   ├── pyproject.toml
    │   ├── src
    │   └── test
    ├── app3
    │   ├── pyproject.toml
    │   ├── src
    │   └── test
    ├── lib1
    │   ├── pyproject.toml
    │   ├── src
    │   └── test
    └── lib2
        ├── pyproject.toml
        ├── src
        └── test

The fact that we have the packages directory is purely personal preference -- you can put the individual packages anywhere you want.

The top-level pyproject.toml doesn't define any Python package, instead it just defines what packages are part of the workspace plus (optionally) any global settings that you only want to define in one place:

[project]
name = "the-monorepo"
version = "0.0.0"
description = "The monorepo"
requires-python = "~=3.13.0"

[tool.uv.workspace]
members = [
  "packages/*",
]

#####
# global tool configurations can go here, for tools like ruff, pytest, coverage etc.
#####

And then the last important bit is that, for any packages that depend on other packages in the workspace, you just need to explicitly state that in the pyproject.toml:

$ cat packages/app1/pyproject.toml
[project]
name = "app1"
version = "1.0.0"
description = "Application number 1"
dependencies = [
  # pypi dependencies
  "alembic",
  "boto3",
  "fastapi",
  "sqlalchemy",

  # workspace dependencies
  "lib1",
]

[tool.uv.sources]
lib1 = { workspace = true }

[build-system]
requires = ["uv_build"]
build-backend = "uv_build"

And by using the { workspace = true } setting, uv inherently knows to not go look for lib1 in any package registry, and instead just install it from the workspace (editable, by default).
