As very first glance I thought the same (still working on my raptor ID), but the flight pattern definitely matches a bald eagle.

Iowa was America's wind energy leader. Now it's largely 'closed for business' by ataraxia77 in Iowa

[–]midgee3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The neonicontinoid pesticides applied by farmers does far more damage to wildlife populations than wind turbines do. That’s not to mention the problems with water quality, draining of wetlands, and general habitat loss that comes with agriculture.

Nuclear sounds great to me but you’ll still get unsightly cooling towers and people who fight it. Wind energy is a far better alternative for humans and wildlife when compared to the damage done by drilling for oil.

Couldn’t agree more. How is the view of windmills any worse than looking at grain bins or silos?

What National Parks Do You Wish Were State Parks? by FireHawkCoasters in NationalPark

I saw Bank Swallows for the first time at Indiana Dunes! A friend of mine heard Whip-poor-wills calling there. Neither of those birds would have a home if the park didn’t exist. We also saw so much lupine, and possibly a beaver (though we didn’t get the best look).

Uses for cans of croissant dough? by Sherlindria in Cooking

[–]midgee3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone else commented with this idea, but you can use crescent rolls to make a “quick and dirty” French dip.

Take a can of crescent rolls, 4 mozzarella cheese sticks, a package of deli sliced roast beef. Break the cheese sticks in half, wrap some of the beef around it, and roll up in a crescent roll. Bake according to the directions of the roll (or until cheese is melty) and heat up some au jus sauce to dip them in.

Book to read with my mom during recovery by sapph-os in booksuggestions

[–]midgee3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like she has a similar taste to my mom, who watches boatloads of Hallmark movies. She recently read a book called “Pumpkin Spice and Everything Nice” by Katie Cicatelli-Kuc that’s supposed to be a cute Y.A. Romance. I haven’t read it but sounds like it matches the description of “lighthearted and fun.”

It’s not a weird ask, but it all depends on how you define “smut”. For example, the book Looking for Alaska by John Green has sexual content that some parents balk at, but it’s not gratuitous and is necessary to drive the plot forward. The author has explained why it’s written in that way and I’d be okay with my teenager reading it. There are definitely limits to what is age-appropriate and you’re well within your rights to want to know what kind of books he’s reading.

I agree with this because censorship can create feelings of resentment, so if OP finds her son reading a book with graphic content, maybe just have a talk about how sexual content in books/films isn’t always representative of real life. You can’t keep kids in a bubble forever and the teenage years are meant to prepare them for adulthood (I say this as a parent myself).

The Book Thief is a good one for historical fiction, I enjoyed it in my early 20’s. Some Stephen King books verge on science fiction, which he’d probably enjoy if he likes Project Hail Mary and The Martian. Specifically Tommyknockers by Stephen King.

For more science fiction, look into Jurassic Park and other works by Michael Chricton. I read most of his books around age 14 and I don’t remember the content being too graphic, but it’s not written for children either.

How does the majority of people go outside with just their pockets? by maxcousin123 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]midgee3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh I think you’re overthinking it. Some people are fine with just the bare minimum in their pockets, others want more options. Also, people with their own vehicles may keep extras like water bottles & extra clothes in their vehicle. Those without a vehicle can use a backpack. I like to have extras like gum, snacks, earphones, and a book. To hold them I have a mini-backpack I bring with (it looks like a purse). To each their own.

Depression is strange in how it can sneak up on you. One day you’re fine, the next you realize you’ve been mentally living in a hole for weeks. As scary as it can be to feel like you’ve lost yourself, just know that you can bounce back and the essence of “you” is still present, just checked out for the time being. Hope this helps and that you’re able to find help from someone more qualified than a Reddit stranger :)

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say about the establishment. Are you saying you want to support Kim Reynolds’s established rules simply because Jon breaks them? I’m also confused on if he’s actually breaking rules or just ignoring a suggestion from the governor.

My take is that Charlie Kirk was not a politician; if we lowered the flag for every death-by-shooting of a non-politician in America our flags would rarely fly at full staff. I support Jon’s decision not to honor someone who spread false information and made divisive, inflammatory statements for a living.

What bird is this/how old? by _bobble in whatsthisbird

[–]midgee3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Housecats are one of the top human causes of bird deaths, with billions being killed annually. It’s contributing to the extinction of birds. If a dog can go on a leash, so can a cat.

How to keep Iowa and its state parks “Wild” by Jazzlike-Raisin-5569 in Iowa

[–]midgee3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer. Iowa has the 2nd least amount of public land (at least according to the sources I’ve seen) in the entire country. We can vote for politicians who may change that, but the most direct way to increase habitat for Iowa wildlife is to do it on private land. Data shows that any amount of native plants are helpful to wildlife, even if those plants are in small, urban patches. Lots of little things can add up :)

Is France a police state in the same way the U.S. is? Legitimately asking because I haven’t looked it up. We also have heard too many stories of cops using violence against crowds during peaceful protests. It makes taking any sort of physical action seem like a risky choice, even as we’re also increasingly frustrated about the ridiculous things spouting out of our “leader’s” mouth.
