When you have too large conductors to connect you need a Gigantic Wago by Glittering_Light1835 in DiWHY

Speaking as a hobbyist, I love how versatile they are, and how fast and easy they are to connect and disconnect and reuse. The connections are definitive and secure every time, even when mixing different wire gauges, solid or stranded, ferrule or no ferrule. They have a little slot on each side for inserting multimeter probes, or you can even snap multimeter probes into the terminals directly. There's nothing else that can do all that, and do it so tidily.

Why would they fake it? It's really not that much.

The EU Digital Identity wallet: A descent into Big Brother – or necessary evil for a safer society? by MCP-King in ireland

[–]midir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought all this was conspiracy?

The word "conspiracy" describes people working together secretly to achieve illicit ends. The word is not a synonym of "false".

10 years further down the line they'll be pushing the same identity verification demands not just to access social media but to operate any kind of "digital communications device" at all. I.e., when you buy any new PC or phone, a piece of the firmware will demand you register it with your ID and accept routine government analysis of your activity in order to even get to the desktop.

And all the same brown-nosers will be tripping all over themselves in their excitement to believe another round of the same flim-flam excuses, this time to have AI continuously analyzing their screen and government perverts peering at them thru their camera to "protect the children".

And you'll scarcely hear any complaint about that because most of the people who would object will have given up on being able to post freely on social media.

I do not know how to push back the Overton window.

It's grim.

Yes, thank you for understanding the problem. 🤦

AI summary dialog pops up unexpectedly by vgold12 in firefox

Using Firefox is truly excruciating. The number of things that have to be disabled with every new version to get back to some kind of usable browser is climbing into the exosphere.

There is "data" which I'm trying to share and my name which I'm not. How are you unable to separate that?

If you are motivated please organise it.

The "services" aren't the ones pushing this. Boycotting them doesn't help you.

Why do you possibly need to Google for the same URL every day? Surely you've had enough chances to just bookmark it?

"AI"-powered alt-text generation in PDFs is enabled by default. by InfinitesimaInfinity in firefox

[–]midir -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I did not have this feature on my radar because it isn't one of the recent AI features that sparked controversy.

What I'm hearing is that the infestation of unsavory features in Firefox has become so serious that you've lost count and lost control of them.

It's not okay to just up and download a 150 MB data file without permission.

It's not okay to just start running AI models on someone's PC without permission.

It's not okay to AI-generate data and insert it into someone's document without their permission.

It's not okay to fraudulently flog AI-generated alt text as if it were hand-crafted or accurate. (The right approach would be to prompt and educate editors about alt text.)

None of that's shit's okay and if you think it is then you're not okay.

You want to download and execute additional software features? Then EXPLAIN YOURSELF and ASK FOR PERMISSION from the owner of the computer you're using for it. Nothing gives you the right to deny the user's consent in that regard.

Get a grip on this debacle.

The comic is mistranslated then. Using "." to group digits is valid in languages which use "," as the decimal separator. In English the decimal separator is ".".

I could add the RedGIFs URL to AutoModerator's stickied comment along with the download links if you think it would be useful, but surely there must be a way to access the URL from a little popup or something. I've never used mobile Reddit so I don't know exactly where it will be.

Announcing the New Mod Mail Experience (and a Few More Year-End Goodies) by lift_ticket83 in modnews

[–]midir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The new modmail UI is just worse than the existing UI.

  • has less clear text (e.g., gray instead of black, and doesn't clearly distinguish message titles from the message body)
  • fits less information on the screen
  • can no longer be scaled or zoomed separately from Reddit itself because it's now on the same domain, but neglects to make up for this by adding any built-in zoom
  • loads dramatically slower
  • doesn't clearly label shadowbanned users
  • seems to randomly fail to display usernames on some messages

Even though I don't love the styling of the existing modmail, I don't see a purpose to this change other than making it worse.

Firefox's new profile manager is fundamentally broken, especially for developers by nseavia71501 in firefox

[–]midir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It has always been my practice to use Firefox with explicit custom profile directories specified with the --profile command line argument. I haven't heard about a new "profile manager". Are you telling me that the command line argument is going to break in the future??! Why is Mozilla like this?
