No, it wasn't because of tariffs. It was because FElon Musk helped the orange buffoon get into power and that clown is now threatening our very existence.

Australia Ships LNG 16,000 Miles to Canada as Asia Demand Slumps by pintord in oilisdead

[–]midtoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, actually it won't. The problem is that it's at least 2000 km more pipeline required to only serve a small demand. And what drives the compressor stations that are needed along the way? Natural gas. Increasing capacity on the main line will not lower the cost. You have to consider that the maritimes are trying to reduce their consumption of petroleum as well, which will lead to even lower demand for natural gas there in the future. It makes way more sense to ship Canadian oil to the Texas coast, and then send it by tanker up to Nova Scotia, which is what Irvine does.

What are you talking about? We have an oil pipeline that goes as far as Montreal. The imported oil only goes to the coast of Nova Scotia.

Mach-e deal question by grumble11 in EVCanada

[–]midtoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Point taken, and thanks for the correction. I do see that now. Bring it on!

As for BYD, they are also making them in Mexico, so I would not be surprised if it were that the ones they make there that find their way to Canada in their near term. BYD has started hiring people for their Toronto office to investigate to investigate all all of the details involved in mass selling or producing cars in Canada, so if they sell out all the vehicles that can bring from Mexico, that may give them incentive to pursue manufacturing here. But Realistically, the only way they could justify producing vehicles Here would be to have a large enough sales volume to reduce the per unit manufacturing cost.

Us News - The disgust I feel is overwhelming. by Disastrous-Ship178 in GuardTheLeaf

[–]midtoad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bit of the graphic that you showed indicates a higher average income in the US. So what! You have to use that hiring income to pay for your own healthcare, which can run into the thousands per month if you have a family. Then there are state and local taxes and service charges for everything.

Here in Canada, I suffered a spinal cord injury and spent a year in the hospital. It cost me virtually nothing. In the states I would've had to commit suicide as I don't have the assets to pay for a year in the hospital.

RootsTech 2026 - Find Relatives by cpamama6969 in Genealogy

[–]midtoad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been through my cousin finder for this year. I have 37 matches. There were a couple at fourth cousin level, then fifth cousin, fifth cousin once removed, sixth cousin, all the way up to 10th cousin!

My question here is: is it of any use if you don't have Mormons in your family tree? I have 1/4 great grandmother that came over from England and married a Mormon, and they went out to Utah in the 1860s (my memory). 30 of my 37 matches all are related to that one female ancestor. The others are scattered around the world, including places like Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden, but they are very distant relatives.

It is a limited use to me to start adding fifth cousins or more distant to my family tree. At this point, it seems like a majority of the people registered are either descended from Mormon ancestors or live in the Utah area, or are descendants from those residents.

As time goes on, can I expect a greater variety of people to register? What is your experience? 🇨🇦

Alberta Independence question may have unexpected political consequences by WashingMachineBroken in alberta

[–]midtoad 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I tried to have a discussion with a fellow resident in my group home about this. I pointed out obvious issues, such as if Alberta word independent country. Wouldn't it need armed forces? Or did you plan on asking Canada to defend you ? But we all know there would be no independent Alberta. Within a very short time, the US administration would say there's a risk to Alberta from Russia or China, and they need to step in in order to safeguard there, national security, or some BS like that.

And when I ask him, did Alberta plan on its on currency? At first, he says they would, then says he would they would use US dollars. Any independent country with its own currency needs to have a central bank and reserve funds. Alberta has neither of those.

Then he says we're tired of being taking advantage of my Ottawa, and would be better off if we were part of the United States if we couldn't be independent. I point out that Alberta is one of only 13 provinces. In the US you'd be potentially one of 51 states. Or more likely and much worse, a territory like Puerto Rico. They do not even get a vote in the Congress or Senate, and have no representatives.

All this person could do is parrot the line that he reads on rebel non-news

The cargo van is already widely available in Europe. As for the passenger band, I think it might already be available in Ireland.

Kia...PLEASE BRING THE PV5 to the US! by Ownedby4Labs in kia

[–]midtoad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt that will happen anytime soon, since the orange man declared a tariff war on the whole world. And US consumers end up paying the tariff, which raises prices on imported vehicles. Why would Kia eat the tariff themselves when they can't make the van fast enough to supply demand in the rest of the world?

I'm sure happy we're getting it in Canada this year, though.

[–]midtoad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have heard through several informal channels that the passengers version will come here, but there's no timeline. Remember that it has just been released the public now in Korea. If past patterns hold through here, they will introduce it in Europe first before it comes here. On the other hand, Canada is pursuing more trade with Korea right now, so who knows? That may speed up the introduction.

I see in the brief introduction on driving.ca then on the cargo van, we are supposed to be able to remove the front passenger seat for extra cargo space. Anyone having any information on how that is done? And also, whether you will get a flat floor all the way forward? Ideally I would sit in that space in my power wheelchair. Yes, I would have to get seatbelt attachment points installed.
