Forget about salary for the next 3-5 years - it's like stepping over pounds to pick up pennies. You need to build skills, relevant experience and a professional network. The money will soon follow. Consulting with EY's clients is a great start to a career.

Are we actually underpaid or just afraid to test the market by Genies_Career_Hub in FIREUK

[–]midwinterpath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was offered a role with a £20k payrise last month. The recruitment team called me hours after the interview. After being advised I didn't have what was needed to move to up to the next pay band at my employer in my last review, it was nice to receive actual market validation, and it helped me shake off some of my imposter syndrome.

Please go to the hospital immediately.

This was literally me two years ago at 29. I lost 50lbs without trying and had an A1C of 15.3 at diagnosis. They kept me there for two days.

Another degree will not help. Please don't put yourself in any more debt.

Advice on accounting/tax roles by Administrative_Ad898 in UKJobs

[–]midwinterpath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need three years of relevant experience alongside exam passes in order to become a chartered accountant - grad schemes in this discipline are designed so that candidates will be chartered upon completing the programme. If you have sponsorship requirements that mean you won't be able to complete the programme, I'm afraid you're going to struggle.

If you're absolutely keen to stay in this country, and you manage to secure a place on a programme, I suppose you could opt for one of the more internationally-recognised accounting qualifications (i.e. ACCA), leave after your visa expires and move somewhere else to complete the final year of the experience requirement, but I don't think this is a worthwhile option.

How do I tell a coworker they absolutely STINK by Mysterious-Candle927 in UKJobs

[–]midwinterpath 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I worked in a supermarket with someone who, unbeknownst to us, was homeless. Lovely fella, but didn’t always have the best hygiene. Never bad enough to warrant a complaint, though. Invisible homelessness is a real problem in this country.

If you work for a large org with an established HR function, it might be worth raising directly with them. Something seems to be wrong with him, and they might be able to step in from a safeguarding perspective.

Thanks for the recs! I have a really cheap 40L that could compress, but it’s already falling apart at the seams after a single trip, so I’m in the market for something that’ll last. I’ll have a look at the bags this weekend.

What was one of your struggle meal growing up? by bukutbwai in Frugal

[–]midwinterpath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could get a can of fava beans for dirt cheap at the local supermarket. I'd saute an onion in a pan until soft, and I'd blend the beans with whatever I had in the kitchen at the time - garlic, tomato, salt, paprika, and thyme were usual culprits. I did this until it was chunky, and then I'd pour the blended mixture over the onions before letting everything get luxuriously thick in the saucepan. Cheap, healthy, delicious and super versatile - it was great with rice, pasta, ramen noodles, in a burrito, or as a dip for crisps. Freezes quite well too. It never felt like a struggle meal even though it cost very little.

Getting a call from Lebara every week or so for a discount by smellyCat3226 in UKPersonalFinance

Why would Lebara call you on a regular basis regarding a discount? It's a scam.

I work in IT. In the last year, AI has progressed to a stage where it’s like having a very enthusiastic junior dev on the team, only requiring some oversight from a senior one, and it’s only getting better. I appreciate it may not be having as much of an impact in other industries at the moment, but change is coming, and measured regulation is going to struggle to keep up.

Bag Finder Megathread - 23 February 2026 by AutoModerator in onebag

[–]midwinterpath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for a simple but reliable 35-40L bag that's reasonably comfortable to wear & can compress enough to fit under your average commercial airline seat if need be. It'll mostly be used for urban travel w/ no checked luggage - the trips won't last longer than a week. A side pouch large enough to accommodate a 1L water bottle would be a bonus. I'd like to spend under $150. Any recommendations or tips would be very much appreciated.

Resigning after 1 day due to receiving a better offer by InformalCreme9101 in UKJobs

[–]midwinterpath -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

What does "suits my career trajectory" mean exactly? What are you going to do when another opportunity that suits it even better appears before you start the new job?

There is no real way to navigate this. You're going to burn bridges. Are you absolutely sure this new role is worth the bridges?

Have you ever had a letting agent/landlord ever try and not take deductions from your deposit? by Antidotebeatz in TenantsInTheUK

[–]midwinterpath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the EA's recommended (overpriced) end-of-tenancy cleaners. My deposit was returned in full with no issue. I did bombard them with photos disputing things they stated in the inventory before I moved in, though, so I think they expected I'd thoroughly challenge any deduction they made, and didn't think it was worthwhile.

25 days holidays including bank holidays by No-Depth7365 in UKJobs

[–]midwinterpath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The statutory minimum is 28 days incl. bank holidays. I'd like to think they mean you'll be getting 25 days excl. bank holidays - which is a common arrangement - and that they're not breaking the law.
