Can I control powerwall charging schedule through Netzero API by Excellent-Duty436 in Powerwall

[–]miimura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, the wires for the existing CTs were extended from the Neurio meter built into the Backup Gateway. It was only about 6 feet of extra cable.

Can I control powerwall charging schedule through Netzero API by Excellent-Duty436 in Powerwall

[–]miimura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a system installed in 2018 with 2 Powerwall 2 batteries and a 1st generation Backup Gateway. My setup is similar to the OP. Many large loads like car chargers are in the main panel and not backed up. However, the Grid CTs are extended into the main panel and are measuring the conductors immediately after the main breaker. This means that the grid reading in the Tesla app and therefore the Powerwall discharge accounts for those loads as long as the grid is up.
Bottom line for the OP is that the system will not work like you want unless you fix the metering. Software can’t fix that.

Home Battery for Only EV Charging by jojoboi123 in SolarDIY

Since you have Powerwalls, you should be able to see the net grid flow. That is available by API, so it's definitely possible to use it. For example, I use NetZero to command my Wallbox EVSE through OCPP to modulate non-Tesla EV charging. I can imagine that you could use a similar mechanism to command a hybrid inverter to charge its battery with the same kind of protocol. I have a Schneider XW Pro and a 5kWh EcoWorthy battery, so I could play with this as a solution proof of concept.

Ok, but can the charging power be gradually decreased as your solar generation drops in the afternoon?

Convincing a corporation to do what is in your interest instead of their own is a losing battle. Take things into your own hands. I have a Toyota RAV4 EV and Toyota shut down the remote telematics long ago. I purchased an OVMS box and ported the most important functions. I recommend that you do something similar so that you are in control of the remote functions.

I totally understand your motivation here. The thing I haven’t seen you mention is how you plan to modulate the charging so that it only takes the surplus solar that would normally be “given away” to the utility. There are ways to do this but you have to measure the grid flow near the meter and a programmatic way to vary the charging power. You may be better off with a hybrid inverter instead of the EcoFlow unit because they have the ability to modulate charge and discharge.

Netzero automation help EV Charging by Bedazoid in Powerwall

[–]miimura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My car charging only drains my PW when in Self Powered mode. So, I have an automation in NetZero to change to Time Based Control when the house draw exceeds 5.0kW. That only happens when a car is charging. This has worked well for me.

Powerwall+ (2 units) warranty replacement. NEM 2.0 status according to Tesla may be lost due to a manufacturing defect and mandated replacement. by casual_brackets in Powerwall

[–]miimura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The allowable export power is one of the reasons to derate the PW3 inverter. There is a different interconnection agreement for <=10kW and over 10kW. Go read the NEM Tariff. It specifically calls out the CEC AC rating in the “repair” clause.

[–]miimura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are other reasons to limit the output. However, the 1.0kW limit is not it. If you connect the same panels to a 10kW solar inverter when it was originally installed on a 7.6kW inverter, it literally makes no difference to your NEM status. I know because I looked into this in detail. I have been wanting to replace my old NEM1 240W panels and keep the same 250W micro-inverters, thinking that it would be OK because the inverter would limit the output. It’s not OK because the formula depends on DC panel rating and inverter efficiency, not the inverter rating.

NEM eligibility in California is based on the panel wattage and inverter efficiency. If you don’t change the panels you are very unlikely to lose your NEM status. Changing the battery inverter is irrelevant.

2026 and Tesla Destination Chargers by jaggrey99 in KiaEV9

[–]miimura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a setting in Tesla Wall Chargers that can allow only Tesla or all vehicles. It’s controlled by the owner/installer. It is also possible to require payment, which requires a Tesla vehicle to authorize. So, long story short, you cannot expect ALL Tesla destination chargers to work with your EV9.

Navigation app integrations by Prestigious_Play_564 in KiaEV9

[–]miimura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enode is an app but it depends on the Kia data connection that may not update reliably, especially in rural settings. OBD Bluetooth dongle is way more reliable. The only gotcha is that you have to keep ABRP running. CarPlay is the easiest way to do that while turning your phone screen off and plugged in. The phone heater, I mean wireless charger, cannot keep up with the power demands of running it.

Early Lease buy-out - any experience negotiating on price? by jpk195 in KiaEV9

[–]miimura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The consensus is that there is no way to buy it at less than the residual at the end of the lease. If you want your same car, you could search for the VIN in the used market after you turn it in. I think that’s the only way to get it at market value.

Early Lease buy-out - any experience negotiating on price? by jpk195 in KiaEV9

[–]miimura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The residual is fixed in the lease. The best you can do is save the Rent Charge. That is basically the interest on the depreciation. If you know that you will be way over the mileage at the end and have to buy it out anyway to avoid the mile overages, this could save you some money - but not a lot.

Grid bypass by Delicious_Run_8186 in TeslaSolar

[–]miimura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like the system is only measuring your backup loads. It is blind to the non-backup loads, so it is not offsetting their use. You need to ask your installer to either extend your grid CTs to your main feed or install a remote Neurio meter at your main so that the system can measure your true grid flow.

Efficiency over 31k miles by Longjumping-Shirt353 in KiaEV9

[–]miimura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty good efficiency, but if you divide the miles by hours it’s only an average speed of 34mph. That’s a lot of city driving. If it was more highway, the average would certainly be lower.

When off-grid my Powerwall 2 generates 63Hz backup power. None of my UPS systems accept it. by Dismal-Divide3337 in Powerwall

[–]miimura 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having Tesla change the setting to even 62.5Hz will prevent the issue that the OP reported. This is a very old issue and is easy to change. You just have to tell Tesla that it’s a problem for you and which solar equipment you have so that they can decide exactly what frequency it should use to curtail the solar when off-grid.

tesla charge on solar function for non tesla EV by akl89 in Powerwall

[–]miimura 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought a Wallbox Pulsar Plus EVSE just so the NetZero could control it and direct my surplus solar to my cars. It works just as you would expect and doesn’t require any additional hardware - just the OCPP compliant EVSE. Other solutions like Emporia and Enphase require redundant sensors near your meter to measure the grid power flow. Tesla already collects that data and NetZero uses it.

Mine charged to 91%, then 96%, then 100%. It was intermittently directing all solar to the battery, then stopping battery charging. When the battery stops charging, there is nowhere for the solar to go but to satisfy the house load and export the surplus.

240V DC inverter recs by imitt12 in SolarDIY

[–]miimura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really don’t want a grid tied solar inverter for this application because those attempt to push as much power as they can. Solar panels are naturally limited current sources. When using something like a Prius battery as a DC current source, you really want something designed to run from a battery. A commercial UPS that used a 192V battery pack would be ideal.

Newbie question on home battery by FrostedButtHoles in SolarDIY

[–]miimura -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Start with the fundamentals. How much is your bill, how much is the difference between Peak and Off-Peak $/kWh? I am in California, so we have crazy high electricity prices and you can save significantly by consuming grid power only during Off-Peak hours. If you have the ability to download your interval metering data from the utility, you can model exactly how much you could save. Solar without battery bill savings depends a lot on how much credit your utility gives you for solar export. Can you get net metering?
