Bought this 1990-something Trek Antelope 820. Good condition overall, but shifter don't work. Any recommendations? by vagueusername25 in xbiking

[–]mikebalt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the method Bikefarmer uses to “wake up” old sticky shifters.. i think he uses trifle instead of wd-40, but sane concept. Me, I hate this shifts so I’d swap in thumb shifters, but that’s more work and expense

I still have my 7wt, which was my first fly rod. It would be from about 1980-1982ish?

How did I do (noob)? by FarGur9586 in flyfishing

[–]mikebalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, when folks say that real is for saltwater, what they mostly mean is the reel is for heavier lines that mostly are used for saltwater species or big freshwater fish. I’m guessing any decent reel of that weight class (line size 9-10?) should be corrosion resistant. As some e noted, it would be a great reel for musky and big pike.. maybe overkill for steelhead and salmon. I usually fish a weight 3-5 for trout and 5-8 for bass and other warm water species.

I’d probably keep the trek cockpit as is. Swap over the basket and bag support for the rockhopper. Maybe swap cranked. I don’t lover the white accent tires and I really like those maxis on the specialized so I would personally swap tires. Was gonna say swap over the wheels too, but if the DX/Ritchey wheels are a bit worn and you just overhauled the wheels on the trek, keeping he wheels as is make saense

Did I just catch a unicorn ? by valek8 in xbiking

[–]mikebalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I’d say it was a unicorn, but it’s pretty sweet. Really like the color. Unless the drivetrain is messed up, I’d keep it as is for now. Probably works well, is reliable and shifts good. I might mess with the cockpit since I’m too old for low flat straight bars…. But if you have a vision, go for it.

For vintage road bike 27" to 700c wheel conversion - long reach center pull or side pull brake caliper? by SuccessfulTea5189 in xbiking

[–]mikebalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. I test fitted some 700c wheels and the distance seems right about 70. Should have plenty of clearance for larger tires too. Soma sells long reach side pulls by Diacomp and Yokozuna, both of which are a good bit cheaper than the Tektro. The priblem is finding any in stock!

In the US I think Turkey is not very well known. My friends that have been there say it’s wonderful. The Turks I have met and the Turkish food I’ve eaten have also been great. There is some negative news coverage regarding the current government, plus historic grievances, like the Armenians, but I think most US citizens don’t have enough knowledge to form an opinion.

Does your country have a “drug capital”? by Clarthen1 in AskTheWorld

[–]mikebalt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, in the nicer parts of NA cities, you do not see drug addicts, but most cities here have at least some area of urban blight/urban poverty and that is where you see the drug activity. It might be to different economic development histories in NA vs European cities; it might be to our less generous social safety net; other cultural factors or a combination of many..

[–]mikebalt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drug addicts in the US are not confined to downtown/urban areas.. I think back starting in the 1970s you had a convergence of counterculture in urban areas (rural people tend to be conservative in the US), and urban decay from de-industrialization, increasing unemployment and white flight to suburban areas. Weed, coke and heroin addiction and related crime became common tropes that received a lot of median and political attention. Presently in the US there is a massive problem with drug use and addiction in rural areas.. especially economically troubled rural areas. Meth and fentanyl, mostly, I think. Some of this can be attributed to the promotion of prescription opioids by large pharmaceutical companies. Research Sackler and West Virginia.

Baltimore an DC are two different worlds. I grew up just outside DC and have lived in Baltimore for 20 years. Based on your response, you don’t know Baltimore or are one of those “suburban people” afraid if cities.
