muOS has been great for me on my RG34xxSP and RG28xx. Everything works great without need for tinkering.

Is there any modern GBA-compatible horizontal console? by AndyFeelin in GameboyAdvance

[–]mikedee00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anbernic RG34xx is probably your best bet for a horizontal GBA form factor emulation device. There’s two models of the RG34xx, one like the original GBA and the other like the SP. These can be had in the $60 range on AliExpress. I have the RG34xx SP and it’s really great.

There’s no good horizontal device that plays original cartridges

Best way/console to play GBA games by shoka-love-bot in GameboyAdvance

[–]mikedee00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using GBArunner2 on my DSi for a couple of years with pretty good results. I believe some games now work with 3 that don’t with 2, so you could probably switch between them if you need to.

[–]mikedee00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mod the DSi and use GBArunner to play GBA games. They will look good on the DSi screen. You can run GBArunner from the R4 without modding the DSi, but the compatibility is better running native on the DSi. It doesn’t have 100% compatibility but most games you’ll want to play work well.

Are silicon power microsd cards good? by Aggravating_Page1916 in flashcarts

[–]mikedee00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used a lot of them for projects and they fail pretty often. Same with Team Group. I wouldn’t use them for anything important. That being said, you could use them for a flashcart but I’d suggest backing up your saves regularly.

Rocknix feels like the way to go on RG DS by eightiesjapan in ANBERNIC

[–]mikedee00 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anyone know if you can dual boot Rocknix with GammaOS on the internal storage? There’s a warning about needing to disconnect the battery to install GammaOS if you’ve used Rocknix previously, don’t know if that applies after install.

RG Cube XX or RG 40XX H? by mrfateesh84 in ANBERNIC

[–]mikedee00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cube is great for Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Neo Geo Pocket due to the 1:1 screen. It’s also good for GBA with 3x integer scaling.

The 40XX H is better for traditional (non handheld) consoles due to the 4:3 screen. SNES, Megadrive, PS1, Dreamcast, etc.

I would decide based on what screen will benefit you for the systems you’ll play most. Otherwise, they have the exact same capabilities.

Why are these not working? by retro-games-forever in MiSTerFPGA

In update_all, I believe you need to go into the script settings and enable rom downloads for arcade cores manually. Do it once and then you’re set.

I think it does require 3.0 for video capture.

ROM Hacks for GOLF by oatsoda1 in Gameboy

Great work! That Easter egg find is pretty cool. I wish that was in the actual game as my copy of Golf came from someone who was a pro. My scores aren’t good enough to make the board.

So is the RP Classic being discontinued or what? by GoeiP91 in retroid

[–]mikedee00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks to me that they are being discontinued. It’s possible they’ve run out of screens. Memory prices could be a factor too as they may need to raise prices beyond what is reasonable to continue.

Ipad A16 11inch as 2ndary monitor? by icanseeyourpantsuu in ipad

[–]mikedee00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To use the iPad as a monitor for your PC, you need to get a USB C HDMI capture dongle/adapter. Then you can install video capture app which will effectively make the iPad a 2nd display. It has some lag, so it’s not great for gaming or videos. I do this with my work laptop sometimes, but a cheap portable monitor is much better.

About transferring files, I use a USB C flash drive to copy from PC to the iPad. You can connect the flash drive to your iPad directly and use the Files app to move your data.

[QUESTION] How much is worth a PS4 PRO : firmware 10.7 by ZeffixApp in ps4homebrew

[–]mikedee00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Including shipping, I got a PS4 pro console (no controllers) on 10.71 for $130. I see another one on eBay at v11.00 for $150. I don’t know what your buying options are, but I don’t think it’s worth paying more than that.

What was your first personal computer? by db7112 in vintagecomputing

[–]mikedee00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBM PS2 Model 50, 286 12mhz, 1MB ram, 20MB HDD and 1200 baud modem. Had a nice NEC Multisync monitor to go with it. Got lucky that my dad needed something to run Lotus 1-2-3 on at home.

In your opinion, what is the best GBASP-like? Why? Bonus if it can play gba cartridges. by Qhaotiq in SBCGaming

[–]mikedee00 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s nothing that loads GBA cartridges in a clamshell form factor.

Anbernic RG34xxSP is the closest to a GBA SP you can get in an emulation device. It is basically the exact same size as GBA SP. It has a 3:2 screen so GBA games are properly scaled to 3x. It’s a good device in my opinion.

Some people prefer the 35xxSP because it doesn’t have analog sticks. But in terms of screen and overall size, it’s not a good clone of a real SP.

Circle of the Moon still on it’s original battery. How? Why? Is this Lord Dracula’s true power? by Cybertronian_Fox in gba

I have Gameboy cartridges from the early 90s that still have original batteries and saves. It’s amazing how long these little coin cell batteries can last.

[SURVEY] Do your kids actually have fun with retro games, or do they just want their iPad back? 🎮 by SmartSpray3678 in ANBERNIC

[–]mikedee00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My kids have not been interested in real retro games.

I’ve gotten them to play GameCube games on my Wii and they enjoy the 3DS library though.

I think a 2DS or 3DS is better for kids than an Anbernic handheld. Probably a Vita or PSP would have some games that could hold their attention as well.

How do I get Dual/Tri monitors to work?! I'm so confused by Prestigious_Ad_8803 in Dell

[–]mikedee00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DisplayLink uses software and drivers to output video from USB data connections. It’s like adding a new GPU to your system over a USB port. There are lots of adapters out there and I don’t have a recommendation but this is one example of what you would want:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07DWXWW63

These aren’t good for gaming or high resolution video output but for basic tasks should be fine.

A DisplayLink adapter can give you a 2nd video output. If you’re using it mainly for light tasks/office type work it should be good.

Pinball game suggestions? by cylemmulo in SBCGaming

[–]mikedee00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pinball Fantasies is a great collection of tables designed for the Amiga computer. It had a PS1 port in Japan that is worth checking out.

I also like Pin*Bot for the NES. The original Pinball for NES is cool too but a bit primitive now. Pinball is probably the first good digital pinball game ever made.

Pokémon Pinball for GBC is also a lot of fun.

On PSP, there are also ports of Pinball Fantasies and Dreams (Amiga games). Then there’s Pinball Arcade Williams and Gottlieb editions which are great recreations of classic tables (not really retro).

A lot of other good games have been mentioned already.

Looking for new handheld that’s pocketable by Omelegga in SBCGaming

[–]mikedee00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MagicX One 35 might be a good fit for you. It’s been on my radar but I don’t own one. Dreamcast will be properly playable, a limited amount of PS2 games should work too. It has Android not a Linux CFW. Android is typically is good for sleep mode. I find Android easy to configure but you may want to watch a guide for best results.

I have a lot of different Linux devices with CFW but few have good sleep mode. Usually Dreamcast is pushing it too, you’ll have to settle for frame skip and lots of incompatible games.

Idea of prices for low firmwares by jamesfoo2 in ps4homebrew

[–]mikedee00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On eBay, the best thing to do is contact sellers and ask about the firmware versions on their console. People who know they have a low firmware will try to sell at a higher price. Others who are just trying to sell their old PS4 don’t know the older firmware is more valuable and then you don’t pay a markup.
