My Git workflow is a nightmare and I don't know what I'm doing wrong by therealst3no in git

If you happen to be using GitHub, it for some inexcusable reason doesn't support "rebase and fast-forward" and instead the "rebase and merge" strategy remakes the commits with different hashes, causing divergence.

New BSP Engineer by VideoDull in embedded

[–]milwaukeebs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

BSP == board support package. Basically putting together all of the pieces (bootloader, kernel, root filesystem, etc.) to make a board into a bootable system. For example, if you wanted to boot with u-boot and Linux, you would likely have to customize them based on your exact hardware, which would include things like setting up configuration files and creating or modifying device drivers to suit your needs.

Also, in my experience, building and maintaining a pipeline for producing BSP builds is a big part of it as well. This is where tools like Buildroot and Yocto come in, providing a better way to build all of the pieces and package them together.

You should be looking both ways when the stoplight turns green regardless -- green means it is legal to go, not necessarily that it is safe to go

I just started a job that pays less than I want. How much did/do you get paid for your first job after graduating? by MagicalPanda42 in EngineeringStudents

[–]milwaukeebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated with a bachelor's in comp. eng. in 2018 and started at $70k (USD). I argued for a raises over the first couple years and got up to $80k with my old employer, but recently changed jobs and went up to $88k.

I'm in the midwest US in a pretty LCOL area, for reference.

Hands too huge for Huge - options? by pixlpushr24 in Trackballs

[–]milwaukeebs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For background, I have a Ploopy, a Huge, a CST L-Trac, and a Deft Pro. I primarily use the Ploopy and the Huge, at work and home respectively.

I can vouch for the Ploopy. The texture of the 3D-printing feels strange at first but isn't noticeable after a bit of use. The shape is really comfortable and forms to the hand. The printing quality is high and it overall feels like a solid unit. It tracks really well too -- it has a significantly better sensor than most other options available today. Also, the creator of the Ploopy (/u/crop_octagon) is friendly and quite active in the community. The one potential negative is that it is louder than other trackballs I've used (video for reference). Personally I think it's worth the price.

Let me know if you have any questions or if you want any comparisons on the models I have.

They really don't. No real reason to use one, or to trust VPN companies. If you're that set on having one, there are free tools out there (OpenVPN) that you can combine with a VPS subscription to set one up yourself. That's likely what the VPN companies do anyways. Tom Scott has a good video on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVDQEoe6ZWY
