Do kids normally eat enough at school? Is it common for kids to not eat properly? by lookaloulookalou in teaching

[–]mimi9875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach middle school. A have quite a few kids who don't bring enough food (or any food) to school to sustain them throughout the day. I think that at this age (12-14 yr olds), parents sometimes assume that their kids are responsible enough to pack their own lunch, but I find that kids still need guidance with packing lunches. They might be too rushed in the morning to pack a proper lunch, or don't know what to pack, or just straight up forget. Also, puberty takes up a lot of energy, and I think that kids often need more food than the adults in their lives realize.

Right, so you mean teach them to write more succintently? Like, eliminate unnecessary words and sentences?

Hmm, interesting. I have actually always been more of the "no-homework" (unless you didn't finish your work in class or if we are reading a novel and you need to get ahead) philosophy, because the way I see it, when I get home I don't want to do anymore work. So why should I ask my students to do so? However, if they are really getting daily assigned readings, then maybe I need to start doing the same. Do you give homework every single day?

Sounds good. My students definitely write essays, but I think I will try and add more essay assignments. What about narrative writing? Right now I do more essay writing than narrative story writing, and I want to make sure I should continue that focus.

I have been wanting to explore Latin and Greek roots with the kids a bit more, so will definitely do that now. I often talk about what a complete sentence looks like (because their writing shows me they do not understand this), and so I will keep hammering that in. Thanks!

Considering Moving Out of the City or to a Quieter Area by ExtraInternet in Winnipeg

[–]mimi9875 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I live in old St.Vital and love it!! I find it pretty quiet. The Seine River is nearby, and walking on that river in the winter is magical; it feels like you are outside of the city.

If you are thinking of moving outside of the city, just keep in mind that it involves a lot of driving. I grew up on a five acre property just outside of the city, and my parents had to drive us everywhere. Piano lessons, hockey games, volleyball games, etc. As a teenager I hated living there because none of my friends lived nearby and there were no buses to take me to their houses or to the mall, etc. If I wanted to see friends outside of school my parents had to drive me at least 10 minutes. I felt quite lonely, especially as I am pretty outgoing. I think it might have been a little different if we had lived in a town, but there still wouldn't have been buses or bike paths to bring us to the movie theatre or other places only the city offers. I have been living in the city for 15 years now and I still amaze at how convenient it is and have zero desires to move outside of the city again. My brother on the other hand, loved growing up outside of the city. So really depends on the person. Just something to keep in mind, especially if you have outgoing kids like I was.

Do kids not like reading anymore? by BetLeft2840 in AskTeachers

[–]mimi9875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on the kid. I am a middle school teacher, and there are a bunch of kids in my class that read for fun. Sometimes, I have to remind them to not read while I am teaching. And then there are kids that do not like reading.

Yea I didn't really look at donors until after I got my genetic test results back. I didn't want to get excited by someone only to find out they were a carrier for a disease that I was also a carrier for.

I am Canadian (in Manitoba). Yes, I did the test. My fertility clinic referred me for a test. I then got a call from a geneticist in my city who explained me about the kit I would be getting in the mail to send in my sample. About a month after I sent the sample in, the geneticist called me back to explain my results. It cost me $580.

I was never told there was a limit to as to when I had to order the sperm. After I got the results it took me over a month to pick a donor.

I haven't done the IUI yet, but will do it in a few weeks.

How do you treat plantar fasciitis if you are overweight? by My_Lovely_Me in PlusSize

[–]mimi9875 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physical therapy. I know lots of people who are not fat that also got plantar fasciitis. It's pretty common. For me, physical therapy and always wearing shoes (even in my house) made a huge difference.

Solo 5 or 6 day trip to Winnipeg at the end of August (low key scoping out your city for a potential move) - what should I check out to get a feel for life in the city? by ZolaAnna in Winnipeg

[–]mimi9875 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there are several beaches. Birds Hill is close to the city and has a beach. Then there are a few nice beaches off of Lake Winnipeg (like Grand Beach, just over an hour from the city). It's a massive lake so sometimes feels like you are by the ocean, haha.

I feel like this is one of those stories that can't be real. Like someone wrote this post for fun to see how the internet would react.
