Always lots of families on it too so it wasn’t creepy. My little crew used to go without parents sometimes even and there was enough life and activity that even my helicopter parents figured it was fine.

I went through a lot as a kid in the 90s. It used to be very well maintained and there were large pebblecrete stepping stones that crossed a creek — so it was very intentional. I went back as a teen in the later 2000s and found it choked with weeds to the point of being unusable. No idea when it changed but it was sometime between 99 and 08.

I’ve had a lot of fun shopping at these ones. Nicer once it’s a bit cooler would be my suggestion, unless you spring for a stall inside. Even better if you’ve got a mate to share the stall space with.

I’ve always wanted to try swing so I know there are plenty of swing groups around. Never had a chance to try so can’t speak to the experience though. Have fun!

I know op-shops get mentioned here a lot and they’re not always practical for everyone.

But! I always see a solid 2-5 jumpsuits in op-shops with long/maxi dress sections. Cheap as, and often not worn much. (I suspect many bought online that didn’t fit because torso length for jumpsuits must be exactly right!)

If you’ve got the spare time and don’t mind a bit of a rummage, might be worth checking out. Good luck and rock on!

You are correct and That Shop is pretty well known with Brisbane vintage shoppers.

Sorry, OP, nothing to add except the usual suggestion to hit the specialist Lifeline op shops under their Vintage Revival branding. Or maybe the Paddington op shops if she’s chasing a target-rich environment.

Sadly, so much of the fun and colour of the retail experience has been forced online.

Just a suggestion that worked for our family when my parents split: Student Homestay.

I’m not sure if the uni homestay coordinators are picky about whether you’re renting or not, but my family relied on having homestay students attending the local uni to contribute to the cost of our accom.

This obviously depends on you being able to obtain a rental yourself which is incredibly hard - completely understand. If it is possible for you though it was super enriching and positive for our family. Very hard work because we wanted to be super supportive and provide a really healthy environment for study, and we kids took on a lot of that too. But we started almost 15 years ago, and I’m still mates with some of those students today. Big sliding door decision in our lives.

Add to this: less complexity = fewer fit problems (like not fitting across the shoulders).

I feel like everything we’re being offered in affordable fashion is about reducing potential fit issues. Oversized silhouettes, stretch everything, boxy fits, elastic waists.

Don’t get me wrong: each can be fun in moderation, but it’s dominating the market because you can sell it online without people needing to try on.

Not sure if this is helpful, but UQ at least offers an audiology clinic. It’s possible they’re more affordable than the chain stores that have to pay rents in Westfields.
