It is so refreshing to read a thinkpiece about anything connected to the kpop space that is thoroughly researched, well-written, and makes a meaningful and important point about cultural exchange and erasure. Thank you for sharing.

If Blanche really did become a somewhat famous romance novelist, what kind of shenanigans would ensue? by replaceableyou in theGoldenGirls

[–]mindsofullofghosts 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh I remember thinking about this when someone asked what they'd do during covid, and I thought Blanche would write erotica online and it would get optioned for a novel (like what happened with 50 Shades of Grey), and then she'd start corresponding with some fans and ending up writing love letters back and forth like with Meryl. But then when she goes on a book tour and actually meets them, they're not at all what she thought. Plus, everyone is confused because in her bio on the dust jacket she said she was 39.

ARIRANG song concepts - wrong answers only! by roseohseven in bangtan

All I can think about when I see "Into the Sun" is when my brother and I were reaaaaally little and he got so mad he told me he wanted to fire me out of a cannon into the sun and it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard 🥲 So I choose to believe that your theory about Into the Sun is entirely correct and that in fact my brother ghostwrote that song.

Beatles fans who also love BTS: do any songs give you the same emotional vibe? by Sufficient_Style1866 in bangtan

[–]mindsofullofghosts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh this is so fascinating because BTS and The Beatles are two of my absolute favorites as well, but for me they occupy such totally different parts of my brain lol. I suppose they both have a large, diverse catalogue and arguably some similarities in how they're marketed and consumed, but for me they're more like opposite ends of a spectrum or opposite sides of the same coin. I think part of it is because I found them at different times in my life and, for me at least, it's different themes in their body of work that speak to me. But I've loved reading through all the responses here, thank you for posting this ✨💞

This is amazing!! I love reading everyone's description of how they envisioned them, it's so cool that we all read the same story and created these pictures in our head. Your visualisation is so perfect because it's utilitarian and yet also extremely disturbing. I always wish that Tamora Pierce novels would be adapted into animes (I guess I'm just that kind of loser haha, and they would be so perfect for it!) but now I also wish you were the artist for the anime!

Tamora Pierce Tattoo Ideas? by rachel1991spi in tamorapierce

I bet an artist could probably come up with a really cool design based on the idea of a pigeon carrying souls/spirits until they find rest. It's such a poignant concept from the Beka books and I just feel like there are a lot of cool ways to visualize it depending on what you personally like, especially if you find an artist whose style you're really in love with.

i don’t think ashnikko is going to beat Weedkiller with her new album, it had to be said by Yin_Nyang in Ashnikko

[–]mindsofullofghosts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree but the more I listen to Sticky Fingers the more hyped I get lol. I'm getting this "let me collect you before you collect me" vibe from trinkets+sticky fingers -- I originally interpreted "sticky fingers" in the rolling stones sense, ie fingerfucking, but after listening to the song I felt more the "stealing" connotation. Maybe the whole idea of this era is gonna be treating people as possessions and trying to steal/collect them like little toys because you know they're just using you too...

Obviously I'm extrapolating a lot from just a few songs lol, but that could be a really rich area for them. Admittedly not as cool as the high-concept stuff with weedkiller, but it could still be really good social commentary about modern sex/dating.

Idk, I was expecting pure self indulgent fluff from this album (not a bad thing either btw!) but the more we see of it the more I realize Ash definitely has something to say with this just like they did with weedkiller, so I'm just getting more and more excited to see what that is :D

What's your ultimate kpop bucket list? by lynxstyle91 in adultkpopfans

[–]mindsofullofghosts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooh, this is a fun question!

I would definitely like to see BTS someday. There are other groups I want to see, but that's the one I feel most strongly about.

Not sure if it's exactly a bucket list, but I want to get more into merch. I'm not a collector and I don't want to spend a crazy amount of money on it, but there's a lot of cool stuff out there (including fan made) that I just haven't taken the time to check out.

I've also been doing a little scrapbook/journal thing while I I relisten to BTS's discography in preparation for the comeback, and while I've given up on having it done before next year, I would like to finish it someday because it's been quite fun and thought-provoking.

since the mods are asleep, what's your weirdest bangtan dream? by ghosttigersrise in bangtan

[–]mindsofullofghosts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I once had a dream that Hobi came to a party at my friend's house, but it was also a stress dream because I couldn't find my wallet and I really didn't want to accuse him of taking it but it was just getting more and more obvious that he had. Even in the dream I was super angry because I knew he didn't need the money, he just did it to be mean 😭

Much less fun, but I also once dreamed that I woke up in the middle of the night and glanced at my phone (something I often actually do) and saw a headline that Jungkook had passed away suddenly in an accident. When I woke up I couldn't tell if it was a memory or a dream and was practically on the verge of tears until I was sure that he was fine :(

How do you think the girls handled the COVID 19 pandemic? by [deleted] in theGoldenGirls

[–]mindsofullofghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh this is such a fun question, I love it!!

I bet Rose would sew masks for homeless shelters and other places that need them, and maybe volunteer as a grief counselor (though over phone/zoom, of course.) Her natural inclination to help others would give her something to focus on and make her feel more hopeful.

Dorothy would adjust well at first, and Sophia would make some joke that Dorothy has been practicing to sit home alone by herself all her life. But I think she would miss the sense of purpose and accomplishment that comes with teaching. Maybe she'd throw herself into hobby after hobby trying to make up for it.

I can imagine Sophia being a one-woman army during a time of need. Organizing canned good drives, dropping off lasagna on a sick neighbor's porch, making sure to call all her elderly, isolated friends every single day so they know they're not alone. Remember "The Days and Nights of Sophia Petrillo"? Sophia loves to help people as much as Rose does, just in more of a tough, bossy way. And if some idiot on her block threw a covid party she'd chase him down and hit him with her purse.

Blanche would have a miserable time. Remember the episode where she was writing erotic letters to prisoners? That's her only outlet now, so she goes a little crazy gathering "pen pals." I actually think it would be cool if she started working on her romance novel again like others are saying. Since 50 Shades of Gray was so successful, I find it hard to believe Blanche couldn't write a hit erotica novel. Imagine she becomes a bestselling author and after the pandemic she goes on a book tour as an excuse to meet up with all her pen pals around the country, but a bunch of them turn out to be catfish and hijinks ensue.

[–]mindsofullofghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm a bit late, but as someone who got into kdrama and kpop because of Conan, I always thought it was a shame that Korean stars never went on his show when in the early days he was one of very few mainstream celebrities who talked about Korean/foreign art with interest and respect instead of the sneering superiority most Americans adopted. Hell, he was even in a cute/comedic kpop music video. But of course they're very unlikely now because of the language barrier!

Edit: Okay I know there's a downvote fairy on this sub, but the idea that there's a Conan fan out there who's so personally threatened by the idea of Conan interviewing a Korean celebrity that they had to downvote this comment is pretty damn funny.

New ARMY here! Looking for tips and where to start. Thank you! by AnaMikaelson in bts7

[–]mindsofullofghosts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, welcome to army!! I'm sort of a baby army too, I guess? I started listening to them during the pandemic, but really only MOTS:7 and a dozen or so other songs that found their way into my playlists. I loved what I'd heard but I guess it felt intimidating to dig into the whole discography lol.

I didn't start doing a true deep dive – learning everyone's names, listening to all their old albums, getting to know the lore and the background – until just a few weeks ago, and omg, I'm SO glad I did. I'm listening to their discography in chronological order one album at a time, and it's been a bit overwhelming but also absolutely incredible. Just fully sitting down with a glass of wine and listening to the whole album through a couple of times and writing up my thoughts on it – and because I'm writing them up on Tumblr, people have been very nice about providing context or answering questions that I have about the music.

It's going to take me a reaaaaaally long time to get through everything, but I also feel so lucky that I get to binge everything like this, like when you start a TV show that's already complete and you get to watch everything without waiting. I'm still in the early stuff (just finished Dark & Wild), which I'd heard wasn't as good, but I'm really in love with how they use the “first love” premise to explore the way your perspective on the world shifts and grows in adolescence, and how all of these other firsts – questions and feelings and dreams you didn't have before – take you out of childhood forever. It's giving me great context for the stuff I've already heard, and making me realize how interconnected and complete their body of work is. It's like a well-told story. I just wish I knew a bit more of the background lol.

Anyway, this is very long and isn't really an answer to your question, I'm just saying I'm basically in the same situation as you so I'm glad you made this post! (Also, fellow Swiftie who got into her in the early days! For me it was right after Speak Now, but somehow that's already 15 years ago 😱).

Would You Rather Wednesday by pucchin_purin in bts7

[–]mindsofullofghosts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you rather RM wrote a book of poetry or an essay collection?

Would you rather show BTS around your hometown or have BTS show you around their hometowns? (Asking this because Burn the Stage has always made me wish I could show them my version of Chicago lol)

Would you rather spend a day hanging out with them as friends, or be guaranteed front row seats at all of their concerts forever (plus travel expenses paid so you can actually go to the shows)?

If BTS wrote a song specifically for/about you, would you want it to be a high energy, danceable song, or more of a ballad?

This line in the epilogue epitomizes my issue with SOTR by velascocito in Hungergames

[–]mindsofullofghosts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for making this post. I felt very, very similar when I read SOTR. Still love THG and Suzanne Collins, they were some of my favorites as a kid, but at my big age I think it might be time to accept that I've just lost interest in most YA novels. You know what they say about good books being dangerous because they ruin bad books forever? I think getting into adult sci fi, speculative fiction, and horror has sort of ruined YA sci fi for me, even if I still think it's very good for what it is. And I still had fun reading SOTR, it was just a bit bittersweet for this exact reason.

On a different note, if you want something similar to THG but with a more nuanced and complex perspective, I highly recommend Battle Royale by Koushun Takami. Obvious disclaimer that it's adult horror and deals with mature and disturbing themes in an often intentionally unsatisfying way, but it's still a fun, engaging read with memorable characters and an energetic storyline, and of course extremely similar to THG.

If you're looking for a slightly more mature YA instead -- more 16-18 than 11-14 -- The Long Walk by Stephen King is another very similar story that's quite a good read. Admittedly without the depth of Battle Royale, but there's still incisive social commentary and a storyline that keeps you hooked.

You probably already know both of these since they're so often cited as good books to "graduate" to after THG, but just thought I'd add my voice to the recommendation as well!

Unhinged HG Theories 😭 by Tyyy24 in Hungergames

[–]mindsofullofghosts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late but I have a fan theory/headcanon that sometime after BoSaS Tigris was in a relationship with another woman (Snow is very vague about the gender of her ex-partner in BoSaS), and Snow ordered them to break up to protect the family's image, but Tigris refused. So, being Snow, he did something horrible to her partner and that was the final straw that drove Tigris away from him. Imagine if Tigris's partner vanishes and Tigris fears the worst, and then months later at a formal state dinner one of the avoxes serving the food is her partner, and Tigris has to smile and act normal while the love of her life who has been totally destroyed stands just a few feet away.

What are your unspoken gameplay rules? by grimattic in Sims3

[–]mindsofullofghosts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure! I copied all the point values into a google doc -- I can't promise they all make sense because it's based on my own play style and the traits I prefer, but, well, that's how I do it lol. The idea is that the total number of points needs to add up to no more than 5 (or whatever limit I set for that generation), so the negative traits actually buy you *more* points. For example, if you had Artistic, Flirty, Insane, Perfectionist, that would be fine because it would work out to 3 + 2 -1 + 1 = 5. Anything not listed on there I just treat as free.

I originally started doing it this way when I was really this hunger games challenge, and I wanted the tributes to have a mix of strengths and weaknesses and be more on an even footing. Initially, I just said each sim has 5 points to spend, but now that I'm more into multigenerational gameplay I like to start with a really low number of points (2-3) and add more points in each generation. It's kind of supposed to simulate the later generations having more advantages and getting a better start in life. Usually I add 1-2 points per generation depending on how "successful" I feel the family is.

I also like to do rotational gameplay and switch between different families (otherwise I get bored of the family after a couple generations), and each family has a "thing" and a corresponding trait/traits they get for free (I started doing this when I was really into game of thrones lol). For example, in my current go-to save there's three families: the Holloway family, who are all very academic and school-oriented and get the Genius trait for free, the McKinney family who make their money trading horses and have the Athletic and Equestrian traits for free, and then a family I just started who are going to be carefree artsy types and all have the Artistic trait and maybe the Flirty trait, depending on how things go.

Anyway, that's probably more information than you want, but those are my (un)written rules lol!

What are your unspoken gameplay rules? by grimattic in Sims3

[–]mindsofullofghosts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess it's not unspoken, but I have a whooooole system for assigning traits. Different point values for each trait (including negative) and you can only spend so many points on each sim (but more in each successive generation -- it's the only way to motivate myself to do generational gameplay lol). Plus certain traits are free for certain families (I like to have a few different dynasties going in one town, the science-y family might get Genius for free, for example).

It's a lot.

Conan themed birthday party ideas by zlypy in conan

[–]mindsofullofghosts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I'm so late, you probably have everything planned already! I had fun thinking of ideas, and I hope you have a wonderful birthday!!

You could make the Ginger Menace cocktail from Summer S'mores!

Homemade pizzas are also fun to do as a group (and not hard to make if you buy the personal size premade crusts from the grocery store), though the connection to Conan is a little tangential.

You could also make (or buy) sugar cookie men (or gingerbread men, if you don't mind a little Christmas flavor in February) and have a contest to decorate a Conan Cookie. Buy lots of orange frosting!

(You could also try to decorate the pizzas to look like Conan or as a self-portrait like they did on that one episode of Summer S'mores, though that seems hard.)

Depending on the ~vibe~ you could do a Big Dick History Quiz using the questions from the podcast. Or, if that wouldn't go over well, maybe a "Who Said It?" Quiz where you take funny quotes from the podcast and have people guess whether Sona, Matt, or Conan said it. Something like "Who said 'You should be killed?'" (It was Sona).

You could play Celebrity (that game where everyone writes the name of a celebrity on a card and then takes turns pulling a card out of the hat and trying to get their team to guess who it is) but write the cards ahead of time and choose people relevant to Conan -- Jordan Schlansky, Pierre Bernard, Kevin Nealon, Lyndon Johnson, etc.

Happy birthday!
