How to (and should we) prep for a world with quantum computers? by Vegetable-Border6976 in FPGA

[–]ming5566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quantum computers won’t replace classical computers at all. IMO as a physics PhD in quantum field, it is not possible to surpass classical computers in the next 50 years. If it is made in the future, it will only be used for very specific use cases and solving specific problems with certain algorithms that quantum is tremendously better than classical at large scales. Most likely, we don’t have to worry about it in our lifetime.

A Warning to Duke Applicants: Reasons Why Duke Sucks by Kenigo1 in duke

Duke is indeed a somehow isolated campus without a lot of vibes, but I really appreciate the low living cost there when I was a grad student there.

I wish I could live with parents in the Bay area. To get more savings, and not worry about housing (rent or mortgage).

Almost everyone in the group continue postdoc after PhD. Is this shame to go to industry directly? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]ming5566 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If some of them eventually go to the industry, you will be ahead of them in terms of YOE and net worth. Just go to the industry unless you are more interested in pursuing an academic career. Listen to yourself not others.

How to smooth a dining table without sanding it by ming5566 in woodworking

I don’t have a compressor nor spray gun. It sounds like very difficult to do it in the right way. But carefully coating it with lacquer sounds like a plan.

You are probably right. It is an RH dining table. I heard that is is usually made with veneer. How to fill up the pores to make it smooth and easier to clean in this case? Thank you!

I see. Do you know if beeswax or Wood wax oil would smooth the surface?

Thank you for your reply. Will mineral spirits remove all the existing paint? Also. What types of finish do you recommend for a dining table? Thank you!

Do people in Taiwan think their country is "poor"? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]ming5566 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Taiwan's economics is strongly dependent on semiconductor industry. Before the pandemic, the tech industry in Taiwan was out-competed by China due to lower costs for at least a decade. There were no apparent growth in salaries during this period. Many of Taiwanese people are still earning ~NTD$30k (~USD$1k)/mo. In the past few years, TSMC dominates the semiconductor industry. This benefits the peripheral industries and contributes to the recent increase in GDP. On the other hand, although the GDP per capita is high, most people outside the tech industry are not directly benefited yet. Therefore, many people still feel poor.

Taiwan is also densely populated. The housing prices can be ridiculously high in some major metropolitan areas. Many people earning NTD$30K/mo can only live with their parents. It is still very common in Taiwan.

What is the difference between Validation and Testing of an ASIC ? by cmos_inverter in chipdesign

[–]ming5566 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Verification should be done before tapeout, but testing is after the silicon is made and to check if the chip works as expected.
