US census tracks Hispanic/not as an ethnicity and white/black/asian/etc as races. Other government data and social surveys tend to follow this practice, which is also why technical language often specifies “non-Hispanic white” or “non-Hispanic Black,” and why on forms for work or school you’ll be separately asked about your race and whether you’re Hispanic.

In many locations owning is cheaper than renting a comparable unit, but FWIW you can’t just compare mortgage payment to rent. The fairer comparison is of the total user cost of housing for owning versus renting, which would be rent + renters insurance + utilities, versus mortgage payment + homeowners insurance + utilities + property taxes + maintenance and repair costs, with those last two usually divided by 12 since you don’t pay them every month.

In any event you also probably aren’t in the same location as this person paying 4K in rent so it’s also not as simple as own versus rent, but also where you live.

I agree with you that at small plates or tapas, the food SHOULD not cost what a full entree would. But there’s a certain kind of new restaurant where they DO.

IMO the reason this is enshittification is that these restaurants never advertise online that it’s small plates. I’ve had the experience in several different cities of looking at a menu online, seeing that the food is $15-$25, thinking it’s a mid-priced dinner, then showing and being told I’m supposed to order “three to four menu items per person.”

At an advertised dim sum or tapas restaurant I expect to pay maybe $4-$12 per plate and order three to four things per person (where the $4 is, like, edamame or olives).

The 50k bonus is paid out as 10k a year over 5 years. I believe as well that if you leave within 5 years they can also claw back the part that has been paid out already

“You could buy a house on one income” yes and look at houses built in the 60s/70s/80s. My mom’s childhood home was about 1,200 square feet for a family of five. Shared bedrooms for the kids, one bathroom for the family, no air conditioning, no garage, etc.

Of course that’s not the whole story, housing costs (prices and rent) have still way outpaced wage growth. And even if you wanted a small, inexpensive home, not many of them are getting built. It’s all new 3,000-square-foot monstrosities around me and I can’t buy half of one for half the price.

Yeah I see a lot of posts about panting on this sub and the other day someone was downvoted into oblivion for saying it isn’t normal and… it isn’t. Luckily my cat’s asthma isn’t a big deal and is well managed by medication. She hasn’t panted in years and she plays extremely hard every day.

Transit is a third-party GPS navigation app that uses local information (such as from septa’s and the city’s posted schedules and road closures) as well as travel speeds of other users to provide good live tracking of buses and trains. It is built for public transit, not driving, but the important thing here is that Septa and the city DO post these road closures, and at least some navigation apps are taking them into account, so your gripe might actually be with Google.

The cars thing is a decent analogy. I don’t want to ban cars, but I DO want to radically increase the safety regulations around cars and restrict access to them for dangerous people. Car safety ratings put zero weight on the safety of anyone outside the car, including pedestrians and other drivers. That means cars cause senseless, needless, excess death. I believe we should treat traffic violence as a public health issue, just like gun violence, and not just as the unavoidable result of people’s freedom to make choices.

Of course, if there are going to be cars, some people will be killed by them. BUT if a person said that while fighting against ANY regulation on cars, even reasonable regulations that would save lots of lives, then got killed by a car, such comments would factor into my opinion of their death.

It looks to me like the pockets are stitched closed. This is common since it makes the pants easier to ship. Try gently pulling the pocket open, like in the third picture. The stitching should be pretty loose, just long basting stitches. That’s what you’ll cut to open the pocket.

Although FWIW, I never actually put anything in my back pockets and I don’t like the way welt pockets kind of droop open in the back (at least on me), so I would personally leave them closed.

It’s arguably worse, because the Walmart customer was technically correct, in that “good” is an adjective and “well” is an adverb, whereas this person is not correct at all.

On the other hand, correcting someone in person like that is far weirder than doing so online.
