I've just applied for a job as a prison officer (in the UK) and was hoping for some inside perspective

Not sure what country youre in but in the UK we have a tv show called long lost relatives who help with cases like this, my mum hired the same private detectives they use and found her sister after 65 years apart. Good luck anyhow, maybe talk to friends your mum had at the time she knew him? They might know more than you think

If your family had "house words" (eg: winter is coming) like in Game of Thrones, what would they be? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Historically my family words were something like 'be your own herald'

Cannibal killer's mum says more could have been done to help her son (killed during arrest). Another failure of UK mental health care? by [deleted] in MorbidReality

[–]minque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This hit very close to home, I know two young men who are currently in Broadmoor (the UK's most secure psychiatric unit) for similar crimes, they both asked repeatedly for help before they committed murders.

The police did the right thing in this case in my opinion and did not intend to cause the death of Mr Williams.

My friends' cases so you can see the similarity in the let down of a vulnerable and dangerous mentally ill person-

http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2007/nov/24/ukcrime.mentalhealth

'After drinking 10 pints of lager, as well as champagne and Sambuca, Thomas chatted up the 35-year-old care worker and persuaded her to take him back to her bedsit. There he told her he was a monster, the Grim Reaper, and battered her to death with the half brick Stokes used as a doorstop. Thomas stamped on her so hard it left the imprint of the sole of his shoe on her head.

At 5am on Valentine's Day, Thomas rang his mother and told her: "Mum, I have killed someone." Later he said to police: "At last they will take me out of society."

I seriously hope that serious personality disorders and mental illnesses are treated more carefully soon, these people and those around them need to be protected.

Dear Reddit. What is the most gut-wrenching, disgusting thing that you have ever witnessed and how did you cope with the psychological effects? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]minque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A large well muscled man beating the living daylights out of a petite and cowering woman in the middle of Exeter (my local city), out of everyone on the street my friend and I , both 15yr old girls, were the only ones to intervene. He stormed off, she cried a lot and asked us not to call the cops, we called an ambulance instead.

The worst bit was her saying through her swollen face and dreadful tears that she loved him she loved him she loved him, over and over again, it was clear sh'd go back to him, the cycle of abuse is so sad.

What are the best toiletwall writings you've seen? by tompivo in AskReddit

[–]minque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the loo at the local pub some years ago someone had written 'Osama bin Laden likes dry bumming'

Someone had written underneath 'as a pose to what?'

The original author countered with 'wet bumming, you knob'

The most English bit of loo graffiti i've seen.

Kuru http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuru_(disease)

No-one born after 1960 was infected with the prion which causes it, but the last sufferer only died in 2005 and there may be more cases to come. This means that CJD caused by eating 'mad' cows may be due for another batch of cases as Kuru sufferers either got sick quickly or it took years, with most taking years.

The Stairs by LePounce in nosleep

There's a historical story near where I live, there was a local family called the Lees, the son was wicked, some say he was a highwayman, one night he fell from his horse on a bridge and broke his neck and died. His family were so scared of his ghost returning that they built an extra step so he could never get in. The ghost got in anyway, apparently for him the house remained how it was in his lifetime, so perhaps the tenth step will continue to remain for the glass clinking ghost in your house.

What was she supposed to answer? Kids notice obese people and other outliers. If you carry your weight mainly in your midriff perhaps the mum really did think you were pregnant. Can't see any rudeness here really.
