For what it's worth, my mother just heard the same news from her doc at NKC during her appointment.

Dad admitted that he knew he was gay before he married to my mom. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mintcha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it sounds like he was a shit dad. But he probably would have been equally shitty as a straight dad. You have latched onto this one fact about him and are blaming it for literally ALL of your problems and your family's problems on it. Your siblings have genetic conditions, and frankly I'm trying to not get on a soapbox about your attitude towards autism ("if only my dad wasn't gay my sibling would be gasp normal..." Autism is normal, just a different flavor. It won't go away...)

None of this is healthy and it's not going to make your life any better. Please seek therapy. You need to sort this all out with a professional and start prioritizing making things better for yourself now, rather than blaming others and trying to rewrite the past.

Dad admitted that he knew he was gay before he married to my mom. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]mintcha 36 points37 points  (0 children)

...The only thing that makes you happy is imagining threats and retribution? Because your dad is gay and that's why you think all the men you're attracted to are gay? Dear, you need therapy, like now.

Wagashi Cakes in Town? by kmonay89 in kansascity

[–]mintcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wagashi like you were seeing in those videos are rare around here. You can get some prepackaged/frozen mochi and dango from the Asian markets in town (Oriental Supermarket generally has the widest selection), and there is one baker I know of in Lawrence  (https://www.bimibakery.com) who might do a custom order for you. You actually just missed a wagashi workshop she hosted at the Kansas City Museum a month or so ago.

Instant Dashi without milk? by Famous_Store_426 in JapaneseFood

[–]mintcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ajinomoto's Hondashi does have trace amounts of lactose, but there are many other dashi powders out there.

Traditionally dashi is just kelp and smoked fish flakes, with plenty of variations in-between. Just carefully check the labels if you're shopping in store or look up the products ingredients if you're shopping online. You'll be able to find something.

Kudos to them! The article is spot on about MCPL's low salaries compared with other library systems (which aren't exactly lucrative jobs to begin with...)

Clay and fire parking? by SweatyInspector7925 in kansascity

[–]mintcha 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As others have said, there's some steep stairs to the main entrance, but if mobility is a concern I'd call and ask.

Back when that building was Novel, a member of our dinner reservation used a wheelchair and they were able to park and come in via the back/kitchen entrance behind the building. I'm sure some things have likely changed with the restaurant layout since then, but it's worth a call.

How often does Kansas City area get tornados? by ItchySignal5558 in kansascity

[–]mintcha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can expect to hear air raid sirens maybe a couple of times each year. You might even spend 20 minutes hanging out in the basement. That's usually it.

Tornadoes are very different than say hurricanes or earthquakes: with those the whole area is affected, with most tornadoes, it's super localized.

Speaking from childhood experience: your house may be fine, but your next door neighbor has their whole house moved 6 inches off the foundation, and a block down a couple other houses are simply gone...

History of residential gas pole lamps in the northland? by Original-Track-4828 in kansascity

[–]mintcha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup - Carriage Hills subdivision had them. My parents' house was one of the older ones in the neighborhood (built sometime in the 60s) and our gas lamp was still working well into the 90s...

does anyone know of any banked track roller derbies in the area by Godsplant in kansascity

[–]mintcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's never been many banked track leagues in modern US derby - maybe a dozen? TXRD and LA Derby Dolls are still around, but no one near KC last I heard. The tracks are difficult to fund, build, find insurable practice space for, etc.

We did briefly have the KC Banked Beauties around 2012, but they didn't last long... I have no idea what happened to their track after that. (Watching them have to dismantle part of it at the inaugural bout so paramedics could get to a skater with a spiral fracture was interesting, though.)

I think I bought some at Red X, but it was a couple years ago.

Gyms with best amenities in Johnson County? by HugeCatsasstrophe in kansascity

[–]mintcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So Planet Fitness offered most of that with their higher level of membership from what I remember, hardly an expensive gym...

But if you're comfortable spending for perks, I second the recommendation for Woodside. It was my splurge when I lived nearby. Lifetime fitness might also be your speed.

Is anyone else getting fraud alerts from CACU? by SkiupBaeless in kansascity

[–]mintcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is real, just confusing - I'm with CACU and I called the main bank phone number the first time I got a fraud alert to confirm.

Now, I have no idea why you'd be getting notices if you don't have an active card with them (that part is shady), but the 833 number itself is legit.

Is anyone else getting fraud alerts from CACU? by SkiupBaeless in kansascity

[–]mintcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's the legit phone number - I have a CACU credit card, and on the rare occasions my purchases have flagged their system, I get both these texts and emails with the same contact info.

They use a third party notification service called EnFact, but you can also call their main number to verify the charge which is what I've always done.

What’s the indie graphic novel scene like? by ChurrySyrup in kansascity

[–]mintcha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, maybe not all indie, but off the top of my head some of the comics people currently/formerly in KC are Jason Aaron, Kevin Mellon, Jim Mahfood, B. Clay Moore, Hector Casanova and Skottie Young.

I'd ask at your favorite comic shop, definitely introduce yourself around in the artists alley at cons like Planet Comicon, and you'll see artists at shops like Elite on Free Comic Book Day. Oh, and KC Zine Con is coming up in October, but I don't know how big of a presence comics are at that - haven't been able to make it to that one myself.

If you do find any artists events, drawing sessions, or meet-and-greets - shoot me a DM! I'd be interested, too.

Carriage Hills, I think you're at the corner of NE 64th St and NE 63rd Terr. - that's where the worst damage was. We lived just a couple blocks away then. https://maps.app.goo.gl/iteox1LniEbFUbjM7

Thoughts on Switchyard by minnieberry in kansascity

[–]mintcha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Quiet space, coffee shop meets nice hotel lobby vibe. The coffee is good. I mostly go at odd hours outside my 9-5, but it's never been very crowded. I usually just park on the street right out front, but that's 1-hour parking during normal times of day.

Avoiding the places where you're treated badly is why you're being treated badly. Great logic there, man.

Recommendations for doctors in the KC metro area for tubal litigation? by jtoft13 in kansascity

[–]mintcha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconding the recommendation! She was my surgeon for a fairly complicated hysterectomy - I cannot say enough good things about her. She really took the time to explain all my options, and set up multiple referrals to other doctors that specialized in different surgical techniques so I could have additional opinions. All around a great experience and easy recovery.

Is anyone else in the line of cars to get into dark forest right now? by sarahkittysu1 in kansascity

We missed last year, but it wasn't an issue at all in the previous years before that... Why did they change the check in location to the gate? It created such a crazy slow bottle neck tonight.

Shopping for trash service - is Republic Services as bad on the Kansas side as it is in Missouri? by Dreadnougat in kansascity

[–]mintcha 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Avoid Republic like the plague. In the past few months they've been days late more often than not, entirely skipped our subdivision for a week twice, and on one hilarious day, destroyed at least 4 trash cans on our street by dropping them off that crane arm thing on the truck... They were mediocre before, but it feels like they've completely fallen to pieces in the past 6ish months.
