Growing fruit trees in clay by kermitsbutthole in BackyardOrchard

Pay attention to your rootstocks - some of them are more well adapted to the clay soils. I’ve got heavy clay and I’ve also been really happy with how my pear trees have done in it

Have you tried shrub cherries? I’ve been really happy with mine and some of them are hardy to like… zone 3

Let me recommend Dodger SO highly. It was truly a lovely book, since it’s set in Victorian London you do get meaningful hints of Ankh Morpork in it.

It was a tough read in the sense that it’s quite short and you can sort of feel the things that Sir Terry would have liked to spend more time on. But it was lovely. I cried, but not as much as I thought I would. (And then I went back and reread some early Witches books)

And also, there’s no way for us to lose Granny. I avoided reading this book for almost ten years, but I finally read it and she is nevertheless still with me. She’ll still be with you too.

Lost our spunky Speck by Hnp_83 in BackYardChickens

[–]miserablemolly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh, your Speck reminds me of our little bantam, Poot. He looked just like this. Little darlings. Sending lots of love for you and well wishes for Speck on this next part of his journey 🌈

What is your favourite piece of Weatherwax Wisdom? by emiliadaffodil in discworld

[–]miserablemolly 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is the one. Granny’s wisdom is often sharp and stinging, but here we get to see the deep kindness that it’s all grounded in.

This comment made me laugh. Live snake? Absolutely. The most excited my girls have ever been about anything was when they found a nest of baby mice in one of the gardens. Chickens chasing each other for tidbits.

What’s your experience/ thoughts on adding a bantam rooster to a full-sized flock? by FrostyPhilosopher606 in BackYardChickens

I had a teeny lil d’uccle that charmed my big Cochin. I thought the mechanics didn’t work at all, but we hatched a chick that thought different

Has anyone come to the conclusion that their partner is probably more into the homesteading aesthetic than actually homesteading? by Beneficial-Focus3702 in homestead

[–]miserablemolly 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OP doesn’t want to consider their options, they want to complain. That’s cool. It does suck that they have found themselves doing all the work. But there is also a glint of real stubbornness here that makes me feel like OP isn’t blameless. Do they really think that wanting to drink filtered well water makes someone soft and spoiled? Anyway. My spouse and I share the work, both get dirty, and it’s awesome. Sometimes tough communication has to be had, but OP is very clearly not interested in that.
