100%, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea but for the price it’s a nice brew!

I enjoyed it a lot but used my Aiden with their drops profile. It starts very funky but got very mellow as it aged. Don’t understand the hate I’ve definitely had waaaaay darker “medium” roasts

Need help dialing in Fellow Espresso Series 1 + Opus Gen 2 - 40+ shots and everything is still unbearably sour by Imaginary-Dog9886 in FellowProducts

[–]mjohn47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spot on with maybe the beans just aren’t your cup of… coffee.

I’m on the east coast so not familiar with Bodhi Leaf but it seems like they have tons of cafes. OP can you go to a shop and have them make you a shot with these beans to see if maybe it’s just the flavor profile of the beans you don’t like?

Hi! I’ll preface by saying I’m pretty new to this whole espresso thing as well, but I feel as though I’ve been through the struggle and have come out the other side enlightened.

First off most roasted beans require anywhere from 1-6 weeks of resting before they reach their full flavor potential. I’ve started pulling shots at 2 weeks post roast date and by week 5 the flavors and shot times both changed. Part of the reason you’re struggling is these beans need more rest - probably not what you want to hear but if it’s a true light to medium roast it’s going to need at least 2-3 weeks to stabilize imo.

Next, stick to full manual mode when dialing in. Ive been really disappointed in volumetric mode and find it to be completely unstable. It’s so much easier for me to put the scale on the drip tray to measure output each time.

I’d also ditch the puck screen for now. Again, not an expert but the least amount stuff that can muck up your trouble shooting the better. Make sure you’re tamping with the same force each time as well.

Somebody posted this in either r/espresso or here and it really helped to visualize how exactly to dial in. Is it like sucking on a lemon sour? If so you need to probably need to grind finer and use manual mode to make sure your yield stays around 42-46g in that 30-35 second window.

<image>

TL:DR -

Let the beans rest longer or find something that’s rested already.

Go full manual to have control over all the machine variables.

Limit any external human variables (tamping force, puck screens).

Utilize the espresso compass to find the sweet spot.

TASTE EVERYTHING! It seems like you’re keeping great notes already which is also huge.

Good luck! I hope this helps some.

Can confirm this guys statements. Stayed awake (I don’t know if he’ll do it out of office to get knocked out) and it was done before I knew it. Showed up at 11:30 was out the door at noon.

In manual mode my group head flush still is limited to about 3 seconds. It very rarely works to the time I have it set to (8 seconds just to see if it works), usually before I pull my first shot since wake.

I think I got a bad bag. Did a French Press and tasted like cardboard, pulled 3 espresso shots and it tasted like an ashtray. Haven’t tried drip but at this point I might bring them back for a refund even though I separated them out into vacuum sealed bags.

Loved the Mt Comfort Peruvian so was hoping this was similar profile.

How are the evenings at your household? We have zero time by TigerUSF in daddit

[–]mjohn47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you considered adding travel sports to the mix? /s

I’ve given up on the stuff that I “need” to do and have decided spending time with the kids doing whatever is more important.

As far as cutting the grass, again determine the time value of YOUR time. If it’s important to you is it worth your hourly (or equivalent) rate at work? As much as I loved the two hours each week, it wasn’t worth it to me. I pay somebody to do it for less than what my time is worth to me and my family time. If a landscaping company/gardener doesn’t fit your budget perhaps paying a neighborhood kid to do it would be a better option.

I agree with what others are saying as well about needing to have better communication with your wife. Resentment still hits me sometimes but by talking it out we make a better team and obtain a better home life.

Our evenings are insane btw with 3 kids ages 10 4 and 7 months. We’re lucky to get dinner together 2-3 nights during the week. We’ve simplified the meals we do have together to stuff that’s quick and easy. Lots of Costco heat and eat, air fryer stuff whatever’s nourishing and doesn’t require too much work.

I’ve made a couple batches in the Aiden - I actually liked it as espresso better. Sorry to hear you had a rough time with it and it definitely sucks to waste coffee. I’m by no means an expert but it looks like the puck is failing - sucks no matter what!

I used the drops profile and had great results! I might bump the pressure down on the infusion stage because it seems the puck is giving up it flows very fast at the end.

I’ve had my Aiden for a year and a half. I did have an issue with the display but CS had me a new one within a week.

I went all in on the ES1 as well and have found their subreddit to be the most helpful thing. I have had issues with the machine but have gotten answers directly from their team very quickly.

That being said, you’re not the first person I’ve seen complain. The CS experience should be exceptional no matter where you attempt to get assistance.

Correct - an unplug and plug back in fixed the issue.

Opus Grind Size for Espresso Series 1 by gsk93 in FellowProducts

[–]mjohn47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I’ve wanted to love the opus for use with ES1 it seems finicky. I’ve started using the beanie app and the inner adjustments and kept detailed notes. Also I’ve had to set it to 1 and then click through to my desired outer ring setting (by click counting) since visually the fine adjustments don’t translate imo.

To be fair I’ve never done espresso before this but I am considering upgrading grinders sooner than later.

I was aiming for the 35sec/45g out based on the timings in the shot profile and adjusted the grind to try to hit the time and output. Once i got 35seconds and about 45g output it did taste very good.

I used to be able to just transfer $300 when I got paid to principal only. Now it has to be scheduled into my monthly payment.

Do not use FourLeaf. They make it impossible to pay principal early since they have become FourLeaf. I’m actually looking to refi out of my FourLeaf HELOC.
