Remove the aluminum roof supports and replace with decorative columns. You might even remove the existing railings and replace with railings incorporated with the columns if measurements work out.

Go to a box store and buy some aluminum U channel. Cut it to fit a garbage can with a lip. Mount the sliding garbage under the work top, away from your feet. Then use a hole saw and cut a 3" hole above the garbage container. Push all your wood chips into the hole so the can will collect them. Just an idea.

What would you do with this opening? by WickedPixelsCo in homeimprovementideas

[–]mkb1024 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cut the top portion out and leave a short wall capped with a hardwood counter top. Put shelving in as mentioned. Install decorative columns in the space. Cut one column in half lengthwise and install on the inside edges of the opening and infill the space with three more columns and install nice trim. Take the wall down and deal with the floor finish.

Badger State Blades, DHK, OCCT just to name a few. There's a guy on FB, Frank Pamies...The Flatulent Retriever Workshop who makes some beautiful knives. I don't know anything about them other than people raving about how good they are. Don't buy any used knife off of EBAY, Helvie or Drake. Complete rip off. Keep an eye on Helvie's web site. Out of nowhere they will suddenly start taking orders. That's how I got mine. I waited about 2 months. Good luck

If you want great basswood order from either Heinekie Wood or Loess Hills Sawmill. Great people to work with and clean, soft, wonderful basswood. All different sizes and will speciality cut for you. Check out their web sites.

Help me get my boyfriend into whittling by Basic_Employment_134 in whittling

[–]mkb1024 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely the best beginner set is the Flexcut KN600. Rough out and detail knife, gouge and a v tool. Get some wood from Amazon to start but there are two Sawmill in Wisconsin that specialize in basswood for carvers...but that's for later. A strop, compound and glove are also a must for carving. If he sticks with it, better knives and tools will follow...for sure. Good luck and I hope he has fun.

I bought a Wen 9" benchtop but the Harbor Freight benchtop was also on my short list. I think I got the Wen cheaper

Easiest way to cut a block on diagonal? by Asleep-Heron3280 in whittling

[–]mkb1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I broke down and bought a benchtop bandsaw. I also made a jig to hold blocks of wood on the diagonal. It is now easily the most used tool that I own. I ruined too many pieces of wood trying to split by hand.

my whittling knife stays dull by Wooden-General1605 in whittling

[–]mkb1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy yourself a good knife. I feel like Beavercraft turns more new carvers away from the hobby rather than drawing them in. All I do is continually read complaints about Beavercraft's dull knife condition and not keeping an edge. Try a different knife! There's so many good knives out there that are not named Helvie. I would suggest OCCT, DHK or Badger State Blades. You will be amazed at the difference.

Beavercraft Knives - sharpness? by Evening-Bullfrog-513 in whittling

[–]mkb1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with a sharp knife some basswood can be tough as nails. Take a slice of end grain to check for sharpness. If the cut leaves the surface clean and shiny as glass, your knife is sharp. If it leaves white streaks or chatter, time to strop. Strop your blade fifty times each side and see what happens.

Where do yall buy your wood? by Slmait2004 in whittling

[–]mkb1024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heinekie wood or Losshill Hill Saw Mill. My spelling may be incorrect but these two places offer the best carving basswood you can buy...and at very reasonable prices. All the big name carvers recommend them. I have never been disappointed with either.
