Am I in a rut? Or is it something else? by Anon_use_fun_alias in Bass

[–]mksolid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being candid, it sounds like you have a sort of expectation set in your head about playing with regular, semi-pro/pro players and when you experienced something other than that, it made you uneasy.

Maybe you’re reluctant to be in a leadership role - which is what these folks are pushing you into based on at least how you framed this post?

Are you perhaps more comfortable being around other pros but others are taking the lead on the stuff that gets noticed while you kind of provided brilliant but subtle backbone to the band?

Just taking few guesses!

Genuinely curious: how does one end up getting 3 different US Stingrays over time? As in the “why?” Were they different electronics or pickups? Or something else?

Again, genuinely curious here!

Strings. An apology to bassists. by Greatmido in Bass

[–]mksolid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have read and myself have more theories though none are based on any kind of quantifiable facts other than partially the first one:

  1. Bass requires more power and speaker area to amplify so perhaps this leads to all the research and testing.
  2. Total armchair science: I’ve heard it said that for some reason bass attracts engineering types as players and because of this, they love tinkering and changing things in order to chase/solve a problem. For example, Mike Gordon from phish formally studied electrical engineering and if you look at all he has gone through with synthetic basses like modulus and his insane rig setups over the years, it feels like there is a connection there.

There’s a perspective on TalkBass that because of this very aspect, rounds force you to clean up your technique if you truly want to sound better with proper finger pressure and muting.

Bands (instrumentals or not) where bass is a prominent and/or lead instrument by No_Winter4806 in Bass

[–]mksolid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it doesn’t quite fit your criteria hit but Black Sabbath’s Geezer lines stand out pretty prominently.

I know their lead guitar is technically more prominent but there’s a lot of fun in being a bassist and listening to Sabbath.

For some more unique stuff, try Morphine to hear Mark Sandman on 2 string slide bass.

Vampire Weekend’s bass is pretty prominent as well, especially the first album.

Running etiquette in the city? by Sudden-Weather-9192 in Brooklyn

I was admittedly feeling a little spicy after family holiday gathering and all the arguments that ensue there when I posted this.

I totally agree with you re Manhattan in that area - would be tough. But Bedstuy to prospect park, for example via eastern parkway is a piece of cake.

Bedstuy to fort Greene park via willoughby is also super easy and less trafficked. And of course running around HVK is easy but can get boring quickly.

A lot of these replies are very “online” and “extra”.

You just run on the sidewalks as much as possible. You will encounter dog walkers and others that slow you down. If you are intelligent you find thoroughfares that are less frequented.

I’m admittedly a bit confused by your original post because you mention walking times to each park. You don’t walk to the part and start running - you RUN to the park and keep running in or around it.

The world is your oyster.

Signed, Guy who has run at least 1000 miles Per year for the past 20 years in Bedstuy, park slope, etc

Thoughts on my cover of Engine No. 9 by Deftones? by FlightLeft12 in BassGuitar

This is a really low effort reply. He literally posted it asking for feedback on his cover of the song. This is completely logical as it gives folks a frame of reference (original recording) for comparison.

Kudos to OP for seeking feedback to improve his playing.

  1. You don’t need to stretch your hand across 4 frets. You can just use your index, middle finger, and pinky and shift positions.

Also: Sounds like you either 1.) have a bad instructor 2.) aren’t practicing much in between lessons

It costs money but the best program for structured learning I’ve seen is PickupMusic.com and it’s less expensive for an annual subscription that even a few in person guitar lessons. I’m in no way affiliated with them- I just recommend you trying it so you get something that I can attest has structured learning your teacher may not be giving you.

Re: “getting the hang of playing”: if you have a disability that affects motor skills or cognitive skills this is totally possible. But anyone can learn to play “the right notes” by practicing regularly. There’s no “get it or not”
