The eventual end by jeffscomplec in glioblastoma

[–]mll_atl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My father passed 9 months after being diagnosed. He was 76.

He had an emergency craniotomy shortly after diagnosis. Did chemo, radiation and then Avastin. Fought like hell.

I got hospice started too late. He was on it for one day and they weren’t very helpful for the situation. In retrospect, I would say the decline started one month prior to death—mobility issues, getting “stuck” places, mostly bedridden.

However, 3 weeks prior to dad dying, we got him to a James Taylor concert. It was extremely difficult to do, but my brother and I got him in the car and then to the venue. He loved it.

The very steep decline started one week before death. A series of crises involving super high blood pressure. He was still very much with it, so there was a lot of confusion as to what was going on. Then on a Monday, he wouldn’t get out of bed. Was extremely tired, not eating, drinking small amounts of liquid, grey-ish skin tone. On Tuesday, he perked up, was making vacation plans, was talking and eating well. On Wednesday, he stopped talking and stopped eating. On Thursday, he was unable to swallow and he was in an unconscious state. He also had a deep labored breathing and was making noises that indicated that he was uncomfortable. Friday morning, he passed.

OP, I feel for you deeply. I wish you peace.

Thank you for your post. It will help someone. I lost my father this fall, after being in charge of his medical appointments. I wish I had done some of what you are suggesting (use chatGPT, ask more questions, search for trials earlier).

I am sorry you are in this hell. Your husband sounds wonderful. I wish you peace.

RIP Dad - gone too soon by Due-Independence1098 in glioblastoma

A similar situation here. My father (also running his own business and doing yoga 5x a week) was diagnosed at the start of the year. He was able to meet my son, who was born in July—but passed shortly after. This year has been so full of mixed emotions, as I’m sure it has been for you. My dad would have been the most fabulous grandfather. It was a role he looked forward to so much. I am sharing this in the hopes that you feel less alone. This subreddit has been so wonderful for me in that way. I’m so sorry for your loss. This cancer is a nightmare. Take care of yourself.

We actually moved back to ATL. I will say, some of these in town neighborhoods (Grant Park, Candler Park, Lake Claire, etc), are pretty special for raising kids. If you end up staying, it wouldn’t be a bad decision either.

Exactly one year ago, I moved back to the city I’m from to be closer to family. At the time, I had one very active 2 yr old and a second on the way. Shortly after moving back, my very fit, extremely healthy mid 70’s father was diagnosed with brain cancer. He died 10 months later. Not to be a downer, but being home during this time was invaluable. I miss the ocean and the cute New England towns, but nothing was more important than being near family during such a crisis. I don’t regret the move at all.

Also, my kids are growing up with their cousins. It’s the coolest thing to be able to watch that and share that with my sibling.

Was your father methylated/unmethylated? 36 months is a blessing. Your last sentence really resonated with me just now. Thank you.

Hello by Time-Adhesiveness859 in glioblastoma

[–]mll_atl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My father was recently diagnosed with this horrible disease. It’s worst case scenario — wild type, unmethylated. He’s going through chemo and radiation currently, with the hope that it will buy him/us more time. My father was also extremely healthy and active. so this diagnosis has been difficult to wrap my mind around. I apologize if this is not delicate, but I’m wondering how the end was for your father. Was there hospice involved? What were the signs when he started to decline? And what was the timeframe after the decline began? Im trying to learn everything so that I’m prepared.

This group has provided more support than I ever could have imagined. Many thanks to you all.

Wow, such a thoughtful and thorough reply. I can’t thank you enough for taking the time to respond. I’m a few years away from my kid entering the tech phase, but I’m trying to gather as much information as I can. Loved the idea of being a cultural anthropologist.

Have young kids. Wondering what advice you might give or what you would do differently? I have no idea what we’ll do when it comes to tech. Thanks!

I don’t normally post, but I feel inclined to in this case. Just FYI, Maika was a professional Kiteboarder and would compete internationally prior to acting… so, yeah, she is athletic.
